Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun?
I always high on life.  And by 'life' I mean a haphazard combination of beer, leftover prescription drugs and aberrant delusions.
Q: What do you like most about the genre you write in?
I hate veneers.  I like the stuff underneath that was never intended to be seen.  Dirty, unadorned, streaked with residue from the failed adhesive.  That's what crime fiction is. 
Q: Where is your favorite place to write?
On a second story lanai overlooking the Estero River with at least a case of beer in the fridge.
Q: What’s your next project?
I'm working on my third novel in the SARCASM series, featuring smart-ass private investigator Mary Cooper.
Q: How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?
I don't care for the drink, however, I do love Barry Pepper, and if he wanted to play doctor with me, I would have no problem being his helpless patient.

Now for my review:Interesting throughout

This book is a memoir of Lucia's long life which was sometimes sad, sometimes traumatic, sometimes happy, but always interesting and thought provoking. Lucia deals with many issues I think most people can relate to to some degree or another. My overall thoughts: If you think you've got it rough, read this. It will help you appreciate what you've got - especially your loved ones. I enjoyed traveling back in time to see her growing up in that era. I chuckled, shed a tear or two, and just kept reading. If you like memoirs, historicals, or stories that stick with you, I recommend this book.

Q: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What do you do for fun? 
I enjoy the simple pleasure in life, really. I love going out to the theaters. I enjoy reading a great book or watching a wonderful movie or TV show. I also enjoy dancing and traveling, seeing new places. 
Q:What sets your series a part from the other Urban-Fantasy/Paranormal Romance books? 
Every author has to bring something original to the genre. One thing that you’ll notice immediately is that I broke away from the norm where the story follows one main character/couple. My stories surround my characters and because I don’t have one set character/couple, I have the freedom to create scenarios you won’t find in other paranormal books in my genre. I really wanted to give readers something that was unconventional and highly entertaining. You can have a number of characters to fall in love with because each one is just bursting with personality. One more aspect that you’ll notice about the KOTDC is that it’s multicultural, there’re straight, gay and bisexual characters. I wanted my series, even though it’s set in a fictional world, to reflect people as they are in the real world. I wanted readers to be able to relate to the characters on a more personal level while embarking on adventure after adventure. 
Q: What do you like most about the genre you write in? 
What I love about Urban-Fantasy is the freedom you have. For me, at least I indulge in combining PNR, horror, mystery, erotica and comedy into each book bringing my characters to life. 
Q: Where is your favorite place to write? 
Someplace quiet, where I can listen to music and just let my mind flow. 
Q: What’s your next project? 
I’m currently working on a horror novel that may see itself as a trilogy… we’ll see. 
Q: How do you feel about Dr. Pepper?
Oh, no, a trap question! I really do not like Dr. Pepper. I suppose 23 flavors is a bit too much for me. LOL. I’m more of an ice tea drinker. :D

I have a pretty eclectic Shifty Business playlist, but at the top of the songs for that book is Pink’s "Try". To understand why that song fits so much, I think you have to watch the video.

 

I see so much of Nicky and Gerry in this video and in the lyrics. There is this constant push and pull between them. Their past, the things they do to each other, the things they do for each other all leave “marks” on their hearts, just the way the splashes of color are left behind on Pink and her guy. Wow… it just encompasses the essence of the story. If Nicky and Gerry are going to make it, they have to realize that “just because it burns doesn’t mean you’re gonna die, you’ve gotta get up and try.”

So besides “Try” there are quite a few other songs on the Shifty Playlist. The scene where Gerry attends the Bittner party in the body of Lady Margaret Alvey? Yeah, I listened to “The Golden Age,” The Asteroid Galaxy Tour. “Hello, Hello” by Missy Higgins makes me think of the way Nicky is constantly trying to get Gerry to open up to him: “Hello, hello, is anybody there? This disappearing act is getting’ harder to bear…”

For actual writing time, I prefer music without lyrics, so that the words of the song don’t interrupt the words of the story. During book 3, I liked to play Nero, music that I first heard during the trailer for the movie Anna Karenina.

The Music of Gambling On A Secret
Music plays a big part in all of my Westerns, particularly country music. I’m a huge fan of country and often tell people I was even country when it wasn’t cool, to quote the great Barbara Mandrel.
But in Gambling On A Secret country wasn’t the only music I heard while I was writing it, or the only music my characters are fans of. My heroine, Charli, loves all kinds of music. She’s a country fan, and is especially a fan of her secret older half-brother country star Nate McConnell. She also grew up on the sounds of James Taylor, Carly Simon and the fictional Sisters McGinnis (think the sound of The Mamas and the Papas). Charli gets the surprise of her life when she finds out the lead singer of the group is not only her neighbor, but the respected Texas lady, Jackie McGinnis Cartwright who is the mother of the county sheriff and local country singer Logan Cartwright.
Dylan, the hero of the story, dislikes country music and listens to very loud 80’s rock. AC/DC, Guns ‘n’ Roses and Def Leppard, to name a few.
The music played in the local saloon is all country. If it’s not coming from the jukebox, Logan Cartwright is burning up the stage with his country band Texas Justice.

If you’re a writer, do you incorporate music in your stories? Of if you’re a reader, do you like it when authors bring music into the background of their stories?
Excerpt:“Ferguson, what are you doing here?” Dylan barked.
Leon ambled toward them on the stone path. “I’m saving a young maiden from torment. What are you doing here, playing the part of the devil?”
“I’m Miss Monroe’s new manager.” The deadly edge of his voice matched the flintiness of his eyes. “If there’s anyone to save the young maiden from, it’s you.”
“Mr. Quinn, please.” She turned to Leon. “Leon, is there something I can do for you?”
He smiled, showing off perfect white teeth in a face handsome enough to belong to an actor. “I was just passing by on my way home and decided to stop. How are the boys working out?”
Dylan’s stance widened and his hands flexed at his slides. “What boys?”
“Charli and I have entered into a business arrangement.”
She lost the battle with the urge to wrap her arms around herself. As much as she appreciated Leon’s kindness, respected him, and was even a little attracted to him, something about him didn’t sit right with her. He represented her peers in the community. According to Mrs. Pratt, besides the Cartwrights, she and Leon were undoubtedly the wealthiest residents in the county. No one in Colton could learn about her past. It would ruin her, and Leon, no doubt, had the means to dig up the dirt.
“Really?” Dylan stepped closer to her in a protective manner. Whiskey tainted his breath as the warmth of the exhalations tickled her cheek. “What kind of business arrangement?”
She could protect herself. Dylan Quinn wasn’t any safer than Leon Ferguson. Stepping away from him, she forced her arms to her sides. “Mr. Quinn, I can handle this.”
She faced Leon. “I’m amazed by how much the men got done since starting on Monday. The foreman told me last evening they’d be reseeding another fifty acres for hay this morning. And they have the corrals fixed and started on the fencing in the north pasture.”
“Good, good.” He glanced at Dylan. “I’ll be going, unless you need a more reliable exterminator. I couldn’t help but overhear about your snake infestation. I can give you the name of the company that has gotten rid of the snakes in our lakes over on Oak Springs for years.”
Although he presented the perfect solution, she didn’t the like way Leon had looked at Dylan as he said the word exterminator. “No, Mr. Quinn is quite capable of getting rid of the snake.”
“Oh, I’m sure he is.” Leon tipped his hat. “Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you, Charli.” Dylan’s jaw tightened as his uncle glanced at him. “It’s good to see you up among the living again.”
Leon headed back to his Porsche. With no pretense of lowering his voice, Dylan said, “Now, there’s a snake no one wants in their garden.”
Upon hearing the jibe, Leon’s shoulders jerked in mid-stride.
Rattled by Leon’s attention and the snake fiasco, she turned on Dylan. “You aren’t off the hook. I want those snakes gone.”
“We’ll see.”
“I hate snakes.” She shuddered and put her hands on her hips. “Maybe I should have asked him who the exterminator is.”

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book really does cover everything as far as creating financial goals and meeting them by prioritizing your spending. It covers getting your spouse on board and teaching your children to be responsible with their money. Not only does the author share hundreds of money saving tips but he also delves into spending quality time with your family and increasing their awareness of spending and the value of a dollar. All of this, he wraps together in a way to show us to improve our quality of life while living frugally.
