Still my favorite story from the Lord of the Rings set: Viggo Mortensen bonded so much with the horse he rode in the movies that after filming was over he bought it from its owner. If that doesn’t warm your heart I don’t know what could.

don’t forget that he also bought arwen’s horse for her stunt rider when she couldn’t afford it awww

#also don’t forget that for the rohirrim they put a call out for locals #bring a horse show us you can ride it and get a part in the battle scenes #and one women went out roped a wild horse and rode for a few days to set #and got to be a rider of rohan

also sort of relevant viggo also bought the horse that costarred with him in the movie hidalgo and subsequently took the horse (tj) with him to the red carpet premier.

Also most of the Riders of Rohan are actually women because when they put out that call mostly women showed up with their horses and the costume team just stuck beards on them.

Also one of the black riders’ horses in the first LOTR became an Olympic shortlisted three day eventer named Frodo Baggins, but tragically died after injuries sustained on course at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event in April 2008.

Drop-In Workshops: We are having two drop-in writing workshops this winter: Mondays, February 3 & 17, both at our office in Brooklyn.
Spring Session: The next eight week session will run March 3 - April 28 (no class March 24) in Manhattan. If you’re interested in joining us, learn more and apply here. Deadline is February 17.
Live Outside of NYC? We don’t have a formal distance-learning writing workshop, however, we pair writers whose pitches are accepted to our literary journal Prose & Lore with mentor editors who will support you through the process of writing and revising your story for publication. If you want to pitch a story for Issue 4 of Prose & Lorefill out this form by February 17.

And if you want to read all of the info about our memoir writing program in one place: here ya go.

Issue 3 of Red Umbrella Project’s Prose & Lore: Memoir Stories About Sex Work will debut on January 21, 2014. It will be our biggest issue yet, with more than 30 stories - and for the first time, we’re featuring stories by writers from outside of our NYC-based programs.

You can get print and digital subscriptions here or enter our Goodreads giveaway for a chance at winning one of four copies of the book.

Aaaand, we’ll be launching applications for the spring cycle of our memoir workshop in NYC as well as pitches for issue 4 here on January 6th.

Since it’s easy to criticize, but it’s hard to do, I did a do. Here is the do on What It Is That I Do. YMMV, of course.

(I obviously saved #5 on my desktop, so if you have any need for a ‘WEIRD! BONERS!’ dot jpg just let me know.)

[Graphic: “Dominatrix.” (image of Lady Gaga wearing a dress made of stuffed animals and sitting on a throne) “What my friends think I do”; (image of a woman mixing drinks) “What my family thinks I do”; (image of a woman beating a man over the head with a pot) “What society thinks I do”; (cartoon image of sexy catwoman with a whip) “What my clients think I do”; (image of a woman looking mega bored, sitting in front of an hour glass, with the words ‘WEIRD!’ ‘BONERS!’ expertly photoshopped on top) “What I think I do”; (image of a calendar with the 15th circled and ‘Pay bills’ written in ink) What I actually do”]

Pics of the Red Umbrella Diaries night of stories and theatre at Joe’s Pub! It was an amazing night, beyond our expectations. It’s been a week since our big show in front of an audience of 200, and we are digging into the footage already and working on the films! We’re producing a short film about the Trans Women’s Theatre Troupe as well as a feature about the seven sex worker storytellers. See the trailer for the feature film here.

"I Remember" - a video poem screened at the Trans Day of Remembrance Event at the LGBT Center in NYC last night. Very moving, and features many trans women of color, with lines in both English and Spanish.
