Halloween Issue of The Surreal Grotesque is Out …

The Halloween issue of The Surreal Grotesque is out today (Issue 6). It includes my short story “In Our Hearts,” a tale in which deceased loved ones live on in people’s hearts more than in just the usual figurative sense. This one starts out darkly absurd—a little comical even—then moves in a decidedly creepy direction. It’s a tad different from most of the other fare I’ve been producing of late.

Or not.

Issue 6 also inlcudes other macabre short stories and poetry, interviews with Ray Garton and Kathe Koja, a specical feature on the Slender Man mythos, book and video game reviews, articles about Halloween related topics, disturbing artwork on damn near every other page, and other fun Halloweeny stuff. The Surreal Grotesque is edited by Danny Gonzales.

And check out that moaning, hooded zombie pictured to the left of my story--dude's all like, "AWWWWWWWWWW!!!"

My first time interviewed as a writer!

Bizarro Press interviewed me this past week as part of their promotional efforts for Tall Tales with Short Cocks – Vol. 2, a new anthology of short stories.

But should you have as about as much interest in reading an interview with me as you do in lighting your own genitals on fire, perhaps you might want to check out a picture of the little nub that is all that’s left of the extra finger I was born with on my left hand. Such a picture accompanies the interview (scroll down a little when you’re there to see it). Freaky stuff!

Tall Tales with Short Cocks - Vol. 2

Tall Tales with Short Cocks - Vol. 2 , the new short story anthology from Bizarro Press, is out now. This anthology includes my story "I Think I'm in Love (or The Stranger in the Stall)," a tale about a worker in an office building cafeteria who lets the unseen stranger in the bathroom stall next to him reach under the stall partition to touch his shoe--and subsequently permits him to invade his stall in even stranger ways.

Edited by Arthur muthafuckin' Graham, this antho also inlcudes 14 bizarre stories from Donald muthafuckin' Armfield, Nick muthafuckin' Cato, Patrick muthafuckin' D'Orazio, David muthafuckin' Wallace Fleming, Justin muthafuckin' Grimbol, Eirik muthafuckin' Gumeny, Wol-vriey muthafuckin' Jesuto, Jon muthafuckin' Konrath, John muthafuckin' McNee, David muthafuckin' Raffin, Vincent W. muthafuckin' Sakowski, Danger muthafuckin' Slater, James muthafuckin' Steele, and Christy Leigh muthafuckin' Stewart.

Click on the cover image to buy the kindle version of the book at Amazon. The print version is forthcoming.

P.S. Oh, and I apologize for the gratuitous use (and abuse) of the word muthafuckin' in my last couple posts. Not sure why I've been doing that exactly. Even my most recently published story happens to be called "A Reeaaal Badass Muthafucka." Weird. Well, whatever the reason, I think I finally got it out of my system.

Just one more for good luck though...

Story to Appear in The Surreal Grotesque Next Month

We often speak figuratively of deceased people as continuing to live on in our hearts. But what if our deceased loved ones actually did take up residence in our cardiac organs??

My short story “In Our Hearts” will be published in the Halloween issue of The Surreal Grotesque due out mid-October. The Surreal Grotesque is a newish ezine purveying “horror in its purest sense, finding beauty in the weird, ugly, strange, and beautiful.”

Check out their site: http://www.surrealgrotesque.com

Back issues of The Surreal Grotesque include stories from such authors as Bradley muthafuckin’ Sands, Carlton muthafuckin’ Mellick III, D. Harlan muthafuckin’ Wilson, Nik muthafuckin’ Korpon, Richard muthafuckin’ Thomas, and Nathan muthafuckin’ Tower; interviews with folks like Jack muthafuckin’ Ketchum, John muthafuckin’ Shirley, Douglas muthafuckin’ Clegg, and Ellen muthafuckin’ Datlow; book reviews; whole truckloads of macabre art—and more.

Sold "A Reeaaaal Badass Muthafucka" to Every Day Fiction

Whew. *wipes brow

That was a little nerve-wracking, submitting a story flippantly titled "A Reeaaaal Badass Muthafucka" to Every Day Fiction, a popular and well-respected webzine for flash fiction. But they accepted it. "Muthafucka" will be published this September or October.

About Every Day Fiction (from Wikipedia):

Every Day Fiction (ISSN 1918-1000) is a Canadian flash fiction magazine founded in 2007 and published by Every Day Publishing Ltd. It is currently published on a daily schedule.

Every Day Fiction publishes flash fiction stories of all genres, and podcasts stories that have a high level of appeal with their readers. Additionally, they publish a yearly "Best of Every Day Fiction" anthology consisting of the 100 best stories appearing in the magazine that year. They have nominated work for the Pushcart Prize. In part because of its relatively large audience, EDF has placed highly in the Preditors & Editors Readers Choice Poll and in 2010 Shaun Simon's story "Snowman" won 1st place in its category.

In 2010, Every Day Fiction was listed by Writer's Digest as one of the 50 Best Online Literary Markets, and has been cited by numerous print sources including the Wall Street Journal, the Vancouver Sun, and the StarPhoenix.
