New Review for Sand City

5.0 out of 5 stars
AMAZING!!!, December 10, 2013

Amazon Verified Purchase
This review is from: Sand City Murders (Kindle Edition)
This clever book captures your imagination in a way few books can. The author sets the stage, casts a spell, and then takes readers on a wild and fun ride. Plot and character development are excellent and thankfully so as the many twists and turns require some reference points for readers to come back to. Not only is the book creative, it's also highly thought provoking and interesting. The author clearly knows a lot about physics and brings complex concepts into the mix in a thoroughly engaging way. You'll enjoy reading every page and will have a hard time putting this one down! Bravo MK Alexander!!!

Spurious Reviews

Some spurious reviews over on Twitter:
SAND CITY http://goo.gl/oBjLpA

5-STARS “A book so profoundly humorous, by page 168, I had smiled at least twice.”

“The characters were so real, I actually lent one some money and made coffee for another.”

“This book made me hungry. No stars for you!”

1-STAR “A book of such enormity, I had difficultly turning the pages.”

7-STARS “I’ve read books that were twice the price and only half as good.”

“A book of such enormous subtlety, I doubt the average reader will get past page three.”

Give-Away Oops

Apologies...

I created my first giveaway here on GoodReads not knowing what to expect... and I greatly under-estimated the demand.

I imagined that I'd be lucky to give-away the five paperbacks I had, and no more, so I'm a bit surprised to see 200 people have signed up in a day.

And I feel terrible...

If anyone, who is not feeling lucky, would like a free epub version of the Sand City Murders, just drop me a line. No strings attached.

I for one cannot afford to buy my own books!

Readers or Customers?

The other day on twitter, I ran across this post directed to @amazon:
“It’s not my agent, publisher or bookstore who is my customer - it’s the reader.”

I felt compelled to reply: “Argh! A reader is NOT just a customer!”

Maybe I’m being over sensitive. Maybe I’m taking this completely out of context. Surely the OP meant well, but there’s an underlying mindset that didn’t sit well with me… Readers are Customers?

The reply came:
“I mean to elevate the reader, not demean them. Everything I do is for the reader. That's who I work for.”

OK, I thought, but said,
“Your intent was clear enough. I merely object to the word customer.”

And I still do… Readers are customers to Amazon and other booksellers, of course— but are they customers to writers? Particularly, writers of fiction? I say no. Readers are not customers, they are readers, and usually beloved readers. I have an old fashioned, silly notion that readers are the people who temporarily inhabit the world you create. They are the citizens of your story, the willing participants of your carefully-spun illusion set down in words. I don’t write for customers!

Books are not toasters and readers are not customers. In the end, if a person takes a book out of the library, what should they be called?

Someone else chimed in:
“…i believe you are both a customer and a consumer.”

Not sure what this meant, but it certainly put an end to this fledgling conversation.

Ten Reviews

I am not new to writing, but I am new to marketing and promoting. Like many of us here, I love the former and despise the latter. My palms are sweaty even as I write this. It makes me unduly nervous. Still, it must be done, and for me I need a simple goal to shoot for: 10 reviews.

More experience writers might read this and smile bemused. Of course, I doff my proverbial chapeaux to your successes, and I remind you we all have to start somewhere.

I have reviews, here on GoodReads, and scattered elsewhere across the web; I am meaning something more specific: 10 reviews on Amazon. This seems to be an almost magical number. A point where the casual browser might stumble across your book to sit up and take notice— bloggers and reviewers as well. Ten reviews is a nice round number. I might be deluding myself, or at least bitten off more than I can chew. It’s not just the one book I have, there are nine published now… and, if I were good at math, I’d say I am really looking for 90 reviews at least. Hopes and dreams... and a long way to go.

Sand City Chronicle

Ironically or not, I received an email from Amazon this morning urging me to buy the Sand City Murders...

Wait, sounds familiar... oh yeah, I wrote that!
Hmm, I think I read it... like 18 million times.

Another day, another 5-star review on Amazon:

5.0 out of 5 stars
Starts slow, but really picks up!, September 25, 2013
Fantastic story with great characters. The story starts a little slow, but it picks up and becomes quite the page turner!
