Welcome! Please, have a seat, and I'll read you a story. (Right now, if you'd like, or anytime, really. The videos linked here include full-length readings of two of my children's picture books.)

I am a poet, and Dr. Seuss is my hero. I write in rhyme — usually iambic or anapestic tetrameter — because the rhythm engages young children and helps them learn to read. (Plus it's fun!)

I'm also an artist. I love to play with textures. For book illustrations, I often combine mixed media with elements from my photography work, then use a computer to synthesize and process the final "digital collage" images.

And I had always enjoyed writing rhymed poetry — it's notoriously difficult, but I love a challenge — and of course kids are a natural audience for that. My own inner child is still very much alive and well (and quite silly), so I also thought it would be a lot of fun. And it is! It's also very hard work, but I absolutely love it. (less)

I love being outdoors, and in most cases, by the time I get back I've solved whatever problem I was having. Something else I often do when things aren't going well is to switch activities — work on a different book, work on a book's text instead of its art (or vice versa), or work on art or craft projects unrelated to my books. I usually have so many projects ongoing at once that there is no shortage of options!(less)

In Search of a Plot: The Making of Spooky Things

Autumn is by far my favorite season. I love everything about it: The brilliant leaves, the bountiful harvest, the cool crispness in the air, hot drinks and rainstorms and encroaching darkness and crackling fires to keep that darkness at arm's length. And of course, Halloween.
