When I get stuck, my favorite thing to do is to go for a walk. I love being outdoors, and in most cases, by the time I get back I've solved whatever problem I was having. Something else I often do when things aren't going well is to switch activities — work on a different book, work on a book's text instead of its art (or vice versa), or work on art or craft projects unrelated to my books. I usually have so many projects ongoing at once that there is no shortage of options!

I had just finished writing a Great American Novel that was not especially great, and I wanted to try something completely different. And I had always enjoyed writing rhymed poetry — it's notoriously difficult, but I love a challenge — and of course kids are a natural audience for that. My own inner child is still very much alive and well (and quite silly), so I also thought it would be a lot of fun. And it is! It's also very hard work, but I absolutely love it.
