ADHD Attention Deficit Syndrome Part Two
[image error] ADHD Attention Deficit HyperActivity Syndrome Part Two by Jeffrey Dach
Susan is a 13 year old 8th grader with behavior problems. Her parents have disciplined her frequently by confiscating her cell phone, restricting her activities, etc. However, none of this seems to help. Susan is frequently inattentive and fidgety in class. Out of desperation, the parents took Susan to a psychiatrist who started her on Prozac after an extreme behavioral outburst. In my office, on examination, Susan’s pupils are dilated and reflexes hyperactive, typical adverse effects from SSRI drugs. Susan’s labs show a low serum cholesterol and low ferritin levels. Above left image courtesy of Curious Mind Magazine “Renouned Psychiatrist Says ADHD is Largely a Fraud.”
[image error]I explained to Susan’s parents that SSRi drugs are not advisable, as they may lead to “mania and psychosis” with diagnosis of “bipolar syndrome “.(1) This is a devastating outcome because Susan would then be placed on atypical antipsychotic medication which would destroy any possibility of having a normal life.(1) However, the parents insist the SSRI drugs have calmed Susan down, and her behavior has improved.
The Problem Child- ADD, ADHD
[image error]This brings us to the “problem child” whose parents look to the medical system for help with a “behavior problem” and are handed one or more psycho-active drugs for their child. Amphetamines such as Ritalin, Adderal and Vyvanse are commonly handed out for the inattentive, or hyperactive child who is given the “rubber stamp” diagnosis of ADD, ADHD, a manufactured diagnosis used to create massive profits in the criminal marketing of amphetamines to children. In reality, the behavioral outbursts are a “red flag” for an underlying biologic, metabolic or nutritional disorder.Left Image: Psychiatric Testing for ADD ADHD is an unreliable series of questions, Swami with crystal ball courtesy of James Greenblatt MD.
In part one of this series, we examined the criminal activities of the drug industry, marketing amphetamines to children and young adults under the guise of medication for a manufactured disease called ADD, ADHD.
[image error]James Greenblatt MD Integrative Psychiatrist
In part two, this article, we present to you the work of James Greenblatt MD, a child psychiatrist in the Boston area with an integrative approach to the ADD, ADHD child with behavior problems.
Dr Greeblatt spoke at the 2017 Toronto Orthomolecular Medicine Conference, and presented his material on the treatment of ADHD with a nutritional supplement called OPC- Pycnogenol.
Dr Greenblatt believes “biological and nutritional factors that often play a role.” in the ADHD child with behavior problems. He draws attention to “food additives and nutritional deficiencies”.
This is what Dr Greenblatt says about ADHD (8)
“Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is the most recent name for a complex neurobiological disorder that occurs in children, adolescents, and adults. Symptoms include difficulty with attention, concentration, memory, organization, and for some, impulsivity, hyperactivity, aggressiveness, and relationship problems. The scientific research has clearly documented that ADHD is a brain-based disorder.
There are many biological abnormalities in individuals suffering with ADHD. It is a medical disorder that affects behavior; it is not a “discipline problem.” Many untreated children with ADHD develop oppositional behavior and become a “discipline problem.” For some individuals, the right choice of medication can be an invaluable asset in treatment. Unfortunately, medications do not treat the biochemical or neurological imbalances underlying ADHD and many medications have side effects. When individuals are off medication the symptoms of ADHD return and frequently are worse than before medication.”(8)
Pycnogenol and the EEG in ADHD
Dr Greenblatt presented his case material on EEG findings in children before and after 3 months treatment with Pycnogenol, an antioxidant polyphenol supplement. (2)(9-11) Dr Greenblatt’s many presentations on this topic can be seen on You-Tube.(3) and in his book available on Amazon.(4)
EEG Finding in ADD, ADHD
On the EEG (electroencehalogram), ADHD kids have increased theta waves associated with day dreaming and inattention. At the same time they have reduced beta waves which are associated with focusing and paying attention. In Dr Greenblatt’s experience these EEG findings normalize after 3 months of Pycnogenol supplementation. In addition, teachers and parents report improved behavior in the child.
A number of other interventions have been described by other authors. Dr James Greenblatt reports a case of a child with absent lithium on a hair analysis who responded to low dose lithium orotate, a nutritional supplement. Others have found useful iron supplementation for low ferritin useful.(5) As mentioned in part one, diet modifications such as avoiding food colorings, and sugar foods can often be helpful. Other causes to look for: Lead toxicity, Food Allergies, Vitamin deficiencies, organo-phosphate exposure, BPA depletes zinc, celiac disease, malabsorption, wheat gluten intolerance, sensitivity to red dyes
Neuropeptides in Food
Dairy – Casein – Casomorphin – morphine analog
Wheat- Gliadin- gliadorphin- morphine analog – found in OCD

Oxidative Damage in ADD ADHD Children
What if I told you that breathing oxygen is harmful to our health? You would say that is crazy because we breath oxygen 20 times a minute. The reality is that the by-products of energy production (oxidative phosphorylation) are harmful. We make energy by oxidation of carbon in the electron transport chain in our mitochondria. The byproducts of this reaction are called reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can damage our cell membranes and our DNA. We are protected by our anti-oxidant system which quenches these free radicals before they damage our cell structures. What if our anti-oxidant system is defective ? Research shows that this is the case for ADD, ADHD kids who have increased markers of oxidative damage.(10) In a research study, the anti-oxidant pycnogenol reduces these markers of oxidative damage in ADD ADHD kids. (10) Perhaps this is the mechanism by which anti-oxidant polyphenols exert health benefits in these kids with behavioral problems.
Testing Protocols
Dr Greenblatt finds these forms of testing useful:
Food Allergy Testing (IgG)
Organic Acids (Great Plains, William Shaw)
Hair Analysis (may show mineral deficiency)
Routine lab blood work (may show low ferritin, lead, gluten sensitivity)
Electroencephalogram (abnormal ratio of theta to beta waves)

Prozac is the only SSRI drug approved for use in adolescents and children, and carries a black box warning. None of the others are approved for use in children. The long term effect of this drug on the developing brain is largely unknown, which means that administration of such a drug to an adolescent or child represents an uncontrolled medical experiment, the outcome of which is largely unknown.
Mania and psychosis are known adverse effect of SSRI antidepressant drugs resulting in 8% of admissions to a general hospital psychiatric ward over 14 month study period. “Forty-three (8.1%) of 533 patients were found to have been admitted owing to antidepressant-associated mania or psychosis”.

According to the CDC, Attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) currently affects approximately 14% of American children. This webinar will provide the information to understand, treat, and prevent ADHD by addressing the biological and nutritional factors that often play a role in causing and sustaining this disorder. This webinar will draw connections on how food additives and nutritional deficiencies can exacerbate ADHD symptoms. With increasing concerns of medication side effects, alternative treatment options to treat ADHD will also be reviewed.

Objective biomarkers for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) could improve diagnostics or treatment monitoring of this psychiatric disorder. The resting electroencephalogram (EEG) provides non-invasive spectral markers of brain function and development. Their accuracy as ADHD markers is increasingly questioned but may improve with pattern classification.
METHODS: This study provides an integrated analysis of ADHD and developmental effects in children and adults using regression analysis and support vector machine classification of spectral resting (eyes-closed) EEG biomarkers in order to clarify their diagnostic value.
RESULTS: ADHD effects on EEG strongly depend on age and frequency. We observed typical non-linear developmental decreases in delta and theta power for both ADHD and control groups. However, for ADHD adults we found a slowing in alpha frequency combined with a higher power in alpha-1 (8-10Hz) and beta (13-30Hz). Support vector machine classification of ADHD adults versus controls yielded a notable cross validated sensitivity of 67% and specificity of 83% using power and central frequency from all frequency bands. ADHD children were not classified convincingly with these markers.
CONCLUSIONS: Resting state electrophysiology is altered in ADHD, and these electrophysiological impairments persist into adulthood.
SIGNIFICANCE: Spectral biomarkers may have both diagnostic and prognostic value.

Error in Thyroid Case Report Toxic Nodular Goiter
[image error]AACE 2017 Annual Meeting – Case Report in Error
At the AACE 2017 Annual Meeting, Sarah Fishman, MD, PhD, of Lenox Hill Hospital, in New York, NY, presented a case report of a patient who developed thyroid disease after taking 2000 mcg per day of iodine in the form of a nutritional supplement containing iodine. Left image iodine tablets used in event of nuclear power plant accident emergency .
This case is in error because the patient had pre-existing toxic nodular goiter with autonomous nodule. In these rare cases, Iodine is contraindicated because iodine will cause thyrotoxicosis. The iodine did not cause the underlying thyroid disease of toxic nodular goiter. This case report is a gross error.
[image error]The reality is that iodine intake of 2,000 mcg per day is common in many Asian diets, which are high in Iodine, and these populations are healthy with no adverse effects. This error was made because the authors are so focused on vilifying iodine, they missed the correct diagnosis of toxic nodular goiter with autonomous nodule. Iodine is so safe, in 1924, the government mandated a program of salt iodination for the entire population resulting in considerable health benefits for the population. The government also mandates 65 mg of iodine for the population surrounding a nuclear power plant accident.
[image error] Left image: Toxic nodular Goiter on radionuclide thyroid scan. Note multiple nodules. Iodine is contra-indicated as this will cause thyroid storm and thyro-toxicosis.
In general, Iodine serves to suppress thyroid function, and does not cause hyperthyroidism in the general population. In agreement is Dr. Dayan in his 1996 article on Chronic Autoimmune Thyroiditis in the New England Journal (3):
“However, iodine reduces thyroid secretion in both subjects with thyroid autoantibodies and those without thyroid autoantibodies, suggesting that it acts by inhibiting the biosynthesis and release of thyroid hormone rather than by augmenting thyroid autoimmunity. “(3)
Conclusion: This Case Report is deceptive and misleading and misses the patient’s correct diagnosis. Iodine did not cause the patient’s underlying thyroid disease of toxic nodular goiter with autonomous nodule. Yes, Iodine did cause the thyrotoxicosis episode which resolved upon withdrawing the iodine. Iodine is contra-indicated in these rare cases, and generally safe for the remainder of the population.

Statin Drugs and Botanicals Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Statin Drugs Anti-Inflammatory Effects Reduce Mortality after Cardiac Surgery.
Would Botanicals Be Better? Take Your Statins !
For those of us with heart disease requiring cardiac bypass surgery (CABG), The New York Times advises we all take statins drugs, since studies show 50% reduction in mortality for those taking statin drugs after CABG.(1) I was somewhat amazed and perplexed by this, since I had already written a previous article ridiculing the idea that statin drugs prevent surgical complications. Now I thought I might have to eat my hat and issue a retraction. Header image: Cardiac Bypass Operation courtesy of wikimedia commons.
Pleiotropic Effects
The two studies on this statin drug benefit for cardiac bypass by Curtis and Barakat refer to the anti-inflammatory “pleiotropic effects” of statin drugs. Cardiac bypass is associated with massive release of proinflammatory cytokines and intense systemic inflammatory response.(2,3) Statin drugs can help with all this inflammation by down regulating Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta (NF-κ B), the master controller of the inflammatory response.(2,3) So, yes, there is a potential benefit for Statins as anti-inflammatory agents. Statin drugs block the inflammatory cytokine release in the post operative patient, thus reducing mortality from the procedure.
Lipophilic statin drugs such as atorvastatin, simvastatin seem to work best. Surprising, the authors comment that there was no proven reduction in myocardial infarction post cardiac bypass with statin drug use. This was a disappointment. The reduction in mortality and episodes of atrial fibrillation was thought to be due to reduction in systemic inflammatory response.(2,3)
Since it appears that the benefit of statin drugs in this population is not as a cholesterol reducing agent. The benefits are due to anti-inflammotry properties of statins. If so, then one might consider other anti-inflammatory interventions which down regulate NFkB. Here is a list of widely available Botanicals which exert anti-inflammatory effect by down regulating Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta (NF-κ B) .
Curcumin
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Holy Basil (Ocimum )
polygonum cuspidatum
Berberine (Coptis Chineensis and Barberry, Oregon grape)
Oregano
Chinese Skullcap (Baicalein Oroxylin A)
Rosemary
Although these can be purchased separately on Amazon or your local vitamin store, New Chapter has created a combination product which includes them all in product called Zyflamend, containing a shopping bag of herbal extracts. Some are super critical extracts, revealing the higher quality of the product.[image error]
Blocking Inflammation by
Down Regulating Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta
Inflammation triggered by Nuclear Factor Kappa Beta (NF-κ B) is up-regulated in many other diseases such as osteo-arthritis, viral infections and cancer, so you might predict that many of the individual components of Zyflamend are useful for them all. You would be quite correct.
Left Image Chinese Skullcap Courtesy of wikimedia commons.
Osteoarthritis
Zyflamend, or the individual components would be useful for reducing joint inflammation associated with cartilage loss in osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. For example, Curcumin alone has been proposed as a new paradigm in the management of osteoarthritis. (56) Many of the testimonials on the Amazon Zyflamend product page are from people attesting to good results for arthritis relief.(56)
Anti-Cancer Studies – Prostate Cancer
Most of the anti-cancer effects of Zyflamend have been prostate cancer models, with considerable benefits(4-8) Thus this product, or something similar, would be an excellent choice for a “Watch and Wait” nutritional program for elevated PSA. A few other items such as Pterostilbene and Serrapeptidase would be included. We have followed a number of men with this scenarios and all PSA’s have remained stable or decreased over time. (see my article on Pterostilbene for prostate cancer prevention)
Zyflamend also showed cancer suppression in a DMBA induced oral cancer model in hamsters.(10) An in-vitro cell culture study showed Zylfamend suppressed melanoma cells.(11)
Many Other Anti-Cancer Studies
Studies on Curcumin, Berberine, Ginger, Holy Basil, and Chinese Skullcap have all shown anti-cancer activity.(12-54) Berberine and curcumin are actually synergistic in anti-cancer activity against breast cancer cells.(24)
Benefits for Cardiovascular Disease
If cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis is caused by inflammation, as many now believe, this would explain many of the benefits of statin drugs which are, after all, anti-inflammatory drugs. Statins were originally developed as an anti-cholesterol drug, it was only much later that the anti-inflammatory effects were discovered.
My previous article reported that statin drugs are a failure for reducing calcium score, and may actually accelerate calcium score progression. The cardiovascular benefit of Aged Garlic is far superior to statin drugs for reducing calcium score.
Perhaps anti-inflammatory herbals such as Zyflamend would be more effective than Statin Drugs with fewer adverse side effects for reducing calcium score if combined with Aged Garlic and Vitamin K2. We await these studies.
In the mean-time, studies on the Zyflamend individual components such as Berberine have shown remarkable benefits in prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.(25-29)
Curcumin has been shown effective in retarding atherosclerosis in an Apo E mouse model of atherosclerosis.(55)
Chinese Skullcap (bacailein) has remarkable benefits for preventing cardiovascular disease by “decreasing the oxidation of LDL and suppressing inflammatory responses in macrophages”.(31)(33-35)
Anti-Viral Herbal Agents
As mentioned in my previous article on Anti-Viral Herbal Agents, Chinese Skullcap has both anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties. Dr Stephen Buhner mentions in his book the more virulent and deadly viral illnesses such as the 1918 influenza epidemic are so dangerous because of the viral induced “cytokine storm”, a severe inflammatory response which overwhelms and kills the patient. Botanicals like Chinese Skullcap are not only potent anti-viral agents, they also turn off this cytokine storm, thereby exerting powerful anti-inflammatory effects.(31)
Conclusion
One might wonder about the outcome of an NIH funded study comparing the anti-inflammatory effects of statin drugs to a botanical product like Zyflamend in such diverse conditions such as arthritis, atherosclerosis, and cancer, as well as mortality after bypass graft surgery. Perhaps botanicals would have superior anti-inflammatory effects, compared to Statin Drugs, without the adverse effects of CoQ-10 depletion, myalgia, neuropathy, diabetes etc.
However, considering the current state of NIH research funding, this study would never happen. It the mean time, those of us who don’t have the luxury of time will incorporate the anti-inflammatory botanicals into our routines whenever possible.

Thirty-day all-cause mortality was significantly lower for patients taking a statin 24 hours or less preoperatively (1.7%) compared with 24 to 72 hours (2.9%), more than 72 hours, or no dose (3.8%). Multivariate analysis of a propensity-matched cohort showed taking statins 24 hours or less preoperatively was associated with reduced 30-day all-cause mortality (odds ratio 0.52, 95% confidence interval: 0.28 to 0.98, p = 0.04) versus more than 24 hours or no dose. For preoperative statin dose, 30-day all-cause mortality was significantly lower when taking 20 mg or less(1.8%) or more than 20 mg atorvastatin or equivalent (2.1%) than when taking none (3.8%). In multivariate analysis of the propensity-matched cohort, more than 20 mg preoperative dose was associated with a 68% reduction of 30-day all-cause mortality (odds ratio 0.32, 95% confidence interval: 0.13 to 0.82, p = 0.02) compared with no preoperative statin. However, a 20 mg or less preoperative dose showed no mortality reduction.
statin benefits may extend beyond lipid control [4, 16]. These lipid-independent mechanisms, called pleiotropic effects, involve antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antithrombotic, and vasodilatory pathways. Specifically, in addition to being a precursor for cholesterol, HMG-CoA is a precursor for other nonsteroidal isoprenoid products (eg, farnesyl pyrophosphate and geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate) [17]. These molecules are essential for the posttranslational modification of intracellular guanosine triphosphate-binding proteins, such as Rho, Ras, and Rac1 GTPases [17, 18]. Rho activates nuclear factor-κB, which signals initiation of several inflammatory responses and the reduction of endothelial nitric oxide synthase [19, 20].
3) Barakat, Amr F., et al. “Perioperative statin therapy for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting.” The Annals of thoracic surgery 101.2 (2016): 818-825.
Coronary artery bypass grafting is associated with an intense systemic inflammatory response, which is linked to postoperative complications. Beyond lipid lowering, statins exert a constellation of beneficial actions, including an antiinflammatory role, known as pleiotropic effects. There is increasing evidence that perioperative statin therapy improves outcomes in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Statins are underused in the coronary artery bypass grafting population, because perioperative discontinuation remains a common practice.

Choudhury D1, Das A, Bhattacharya A, Chakrabarti G.
Ginger has a long history of use as traditional medicine for varied human disease. Our present study has shown that the aqueous extract of ginger (GAE) interacts directly with cellular microtubules and disrupts its structure and induces apoptosis of cancer cells as well. The IC(50) values of GAE, as determined from cell viability experiment on human non-small lung epithelium cancer (A549) cells and human cervical epithelial carcinoma (HeLa), were 239.4+7.4 and 253.4+8.9 μg/ml, respectively. It has been found that the apoptosis of A549 cells by GAE is mediated by up regulation of tumor suppressor gene p53 and alteration of the normal Bax/Bcl-2 ratio followed by down regulation of cellular pro-caspase3. The morphological change of cells upon GAE treatment has also been demonstrated. Both the structural and functional properties of tubulin and microtubule were lost, as confirmed by both ex vivo and invitro experiments. The major component of GAE is poly-phenols (around 2.5%), which consist of ∼ 80% flavones and flavonols. Poly-phenolic compounds are well known to have anti-mitotic properties, and may be further screened for the development of a potential anti-cancer agent.

The flavonoids, baicalin (5,6-dihydroxy-2-phenyl-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one-7-O-d-β-glucuronic acid) 1 and its aglycone, baicalein 2 are found in edible medicinal plants, Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi and Oroxylum indicum (L.) Kurz in abundant quantities. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of these flavonoids have been demonstrated in various disease models, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, inflammatory bowel diseases, gout and rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, neurodegenerative-, liver- and kidney diseases, encephalomyelitis, and carcinogenesis.
These flavonoids have almost no toxicity to human normal epithelial, peripheral and myeloid cells. Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities are largely due to their abilities to scavenge the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and improvement of antioxidant status by attenuating the activity of NF-κB and suppressing the expression of several inflammatory cytokines and chemokines including monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), nitric oxide synthase, cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases, cellular adhesion molecules, tumor necrosis factor and interleukins. In this review, we summarize the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of baicalin and baicalein with molecular mechanisms for their chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic applications in the treatment of inflammatory-related diseases.

A Bioinformatic Approach for the Discovery of Antiaging Effects of Baicalein from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi.
Gao L1, Duan DD1,2, Zhang JQ1, Zhou YZ1, Qin XM1, Du GH1,3.
Aging is one of the most complicated phenomena and is the main risk factor for age-related diseases. Based on the public aging-related gene data, we propose a computational approach to predict the antiaging activities of compounds. This approach integrates network pharmacology and target fishing methods with the aim of identifying a potential antiaging compound from Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi. Utilizing this approach and subsequent experimental validation, it was found that baicalein at concentrations of 0.04, 0.2, and 1 mg/mL extended the mean, median, and maximum life spans in Drosophila melanogaster. Particularly, 0.2 mg/mL baicalein extends the mean and median life spans in male flies by 19.80% and 25.64%, respectively. Meanwhile, it was discovered that baicalein improved fertility in flies. Baicalein exerts antiaging effects likely through attenuating oxidative stress, including increases of CAT activity and GSH level and decrease of GSSG level.

Extracts of Scutellariae Radix inhibit low-density lipoprotein oxidation and the lipopolysaccharide-induced macrophage inflammatory response. Mol Med Rep, 12 (2015), pp. 1335–1341
Traditional herbal formulas made from Scutellariae Radix (SR), the root of Scutellaria baicalensis, have previously been used in the treatment of inflammatory diseases, such as atherosclerosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of SR on low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation and inflammation in macrophages, which are early events in the development of atherosclerosis. High-performance liquid chromatography photo-diode array analysis was used to obtain a three-dimensional chromatogram of SR. The antioxidative effects of SR were evaluated by determining its scavenging activities against ABTS and DPPH radicals. The inhibitory effect of SR on LDL oxidation was examined using a thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance assay and a relative electrophoretic mobility assay. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effects of SR were evaluated in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW264.7 murine macrophage cells. The results showed that SR exhibited radical-scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner; in addition, SR attenuated the Cu2+-induced oxidation of LDL as well as significantly inhibited nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible NO synthase (iNOS) expression in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells. Furthermore, SR induced the protein expression of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) in RAW264.7 cells. In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that SR decreased the oxidation of LDL and suppressed inflammatory responses in macrophages, which occurred at least in part via the induction of HO-1. These results therefore suggested that SR may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of atherosclerosis.

Our previous study revealed that oroxylin A, a naturally occurring monoflavonoid isolated from Scutellariae radix, could inhibit the proliferation of human hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 cells through inducing the apoptosis in these cells. However, the molecular mechanism of its anticancer activity remains poorly understood and warrants further investigations. In this study, we examined the anti-invasive activities of oroxylin A in vitro. The results showed that oroxylin A suppressed MDA-MB-435 cell adhesion to the fibronectin-coated substrate in a concentration-dependent manner. It inhibited the wound healing migration of MDA-MB-435 cells and invasion of MDA-MB-435 cells through reconstituted extracellular matrix (matrigel). Zymography revealed that oroxylin A decreased the secretion of matrix metalloproteinases-2 (MMP-2) and metalloproteinases-9 (MMP-9). Oroxylin A also inhibited the expressions of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in MDA-MB-435 cells. Additionally, oroxylin A exerted an inhibitory effect on the phosphorylation of extracellular regulated proteinkinases1/2 (ERK1/2). Collectively, these data provided a molecular basis for the antiinvasive effects of oroxylin A. Taken together, these findings strongly suggest that oroxylin A had potential anti-metastatic effect in vitro and shed light on the investigation of oroxylin A on breast cancer metastasis in vivo.

It is widely appreciated that inflammation and oxidant stress contribute to atherogenesis. Curcumin, a polyphenolic natural compound has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant actions. We hypothesized that curcumin could inhibit the development of atherosclerosis in the apoE/LDLR-double knockout mice fed with Western diet (21% fat, 0.15% cholesterol w/w, without cholic acid). Curcumin (purity>or=98%), premixed with diet, was given for 4 months at a dose of 0.3 mg/ per day/ per mouse. In this model curcumin inhibited atherogenesis, measured both by “en face” method (25,15+/-2,9% vs. 19,2+/-0,6%, panti-atherogenic effect of low dose of curcumin in fine model of atherosclerosis: gene-targeted apoE/LDLR-double knockout mice.

AntiViral Herbals
Herbal Antivirals
by Jeffrey Dach MD
It was about twenty years ago, and I still remember vividly an anxious middle aged man on oxygen sitting up on his stretcher in the waiting area of the Hospital Xray department outside my office. He was there for his daily chest Xray to follow his viral pneumonia. After a few days, he stopped coming down, and the hospital staff informed me he had succumbed to his illness. This was a bitter lesson that, although we doctors have effective antibiotics for bacterial pneumonia, we have no such drugs for viral pneumonia, and in fact, we have very little to offer these unfortunate people except supportive care. And yes, some people will die from viral pneumonia. Left Image Courtesy of Stephen Harrod Buhner author of Antiviral Herbals.
Although modern medicine has made considerable progress in antiviral drug discovery such as Acyclovir for Herpes virus, most cultures and ethnic groups on the planet have successfully used anti-viral medicinal plants for thousands of years. Many of these plant substances are the basis for new drug discovery.
Anti-viral plant substances are useful for prevention and treatment of a host of viruses. The mechanism is fusion inhibition, which prevents attachment of the viral capsule to the host cell membrane, thus preventing entrance of virus into the cell where replication could take place.
For example, this study investigated thymoquinone from black seed as protective for CMV (cytomegalovirus).(1) ” Protective effect of black seed oil from Nigella sativa against murine cytomegalovirus infection” by Salem ML.
“In this study, antiviral effect of black seed oil (BSO) from Nigella sativa was investigated using murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) as a model…. These results show that BSO exhibited a striking antiviral effect against CMV infection “
Herbal AntiVirals By Stephen Buhner
An excellent book on this topic was written in 2013 by Stephen Harrod Buhner on Herbal AntiVirals. This book has an excellent discussion of the Influenza epidemic of 1918 and discusses various herbal treatments for various viral diseases as well in depth discussion of each herbal. I must say the book is impressive for a number of reasons. One is the extensive reference to the medical literature as well as the ethnic herbal literature, pulling usually separated sources together. My only quibble is that reference numbers are missing in the text, so one is forced to search through the bibliography to find the reference if interested in reading it.
According to Dr. Buhner’s book, the three top anti-viral herbals are Elderberry, Licorice Root and Chinese Skull cap.
Elderberry Syrup
Perhaps the most widely available of the antiviral botanicals is Black Elderberry Syrup, which can be found at most health food stores and markets. Nature’s Way offers a version of Elderberry for little kids who pick up the weekly virus at child day care.
Licorice Root
Licorice Root is widely available at most health food stores as capsules or tinctures. Once must be careful to avoid the DGL (deglycyrrhizinated licorice root) as this form has the active ingredient removed. Douglas Labs offers a licorice capsule which Dr Buhner recommends: Licorice Root-V, standardized to 12% glycyrrhizin per each 500 mg capsule. I have given this product to family members during viral illness with good results. Licorice Root is also available from various herbal apothecaries as tinctures. More on that later.
Chinese Skullcap
Dr Buhner reminds us to avoid the American Skullcap which is a different species and less effective than Chinese skullcap which contains the active ingredients Baicalin and Baicalein. American skullcap is called Scutellaria lateriflora whereas the correct one, the Chinese skullcap, is called Scutellaria baicalensis. The Chinese Skullcap comes as a dried root, and best used as a tincture prepared in alcohol. Dr Buhner lists a number of herbal apothecaries that he likes for the tinctures.
[image error] Woodland Essence
offers a number of tinctures. I ordered the separate tinctures for Baikal Skullcap (Chinese skullcap) and the Licorice dried root tincture. (see image at left). I made tea with hot water and both tinctures mixed with Black Elderberry Syrup to help get over a flu big I had. I think it helped, as I felt better after each dose of tea. Woodland Essence Web Site.
[image error] Elk Mountain Herbs
Located in Laramie Wyoming, Elk Mountain Herbs offers a product called Elderberry Plus (see image at left). This contains concentrated elderberry tea, raw cheyenne honey, tinctures of boneset, Baikal Skullcap, ginger and fresh lemon juice. I ordered the licorice root tincture separately, as together this contains most of the antiviral ingredients recommended in Dr Buhner’s book. Perhaps the honey and lemon juice makes this the best tasting and palatable of this group. Here is the label on the bottle:
[image error] Left Image label for Elderberry Plus from Elk Mountain Herbals.
Sage Woman Consulting and Apothecary
[image error] [image error] Sage Woman Apothecary offers the EBV formula which is perhaps the most true to Dr Buhner’s herbal anti-viral recipe, as you can see from the label. This EBV contains the top ingredients, the Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skulcap), and glycyrrhiza glabra (Licorice Root) . In addition a host of other anti-virals are added:Isais indigota, Rhodiola rocea, Ganodermum lucidum, Lomatium dissectum, Pueraria rhizome. Although the name EBV, refers to Epstein Barr Virus, the formulas are similar so this may also be used for most other viruses such as Influenza, RSV, respiratory syncytial virus etc.
Unlike the other two web sites which are solely ordering sites and do not return phone calls, Sage Woman Consulting actually called me back to discuss my order.
This list of herbal anti-virals is by no means final, as there are perhaps hundreds more, such as Olive Leaf, Garlic, Artemisinin, Berberine etc.
One should also rememeber the importance of replenishing vitamin C and selenium levels in the critically ill patient with pneumonia as discussed in my previous article.

Protective effect of black seed oil from Nigella sativa against murine cytomegalovirus infection.
Salem ML1, Hossain MS.
In this study, antiviral effect of black seed oil (BSO) from Nigella sativa was investigated using murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) as a model. The viral load and innate immunity mediated by NK cells and Mφ during early stage of the infection were analyzed. Intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of BSO to BALB/c mice, a susceptible strain of MCMV infection, strikingly inhibited the virus titers in spleen and liver on day 3 of infection with 1×10(5) PFU MCMV. This effect coincided with an increase in serum level of IFN-gamma. Although BSO treatment decreased both number and cytolytic function of NK cells on day 3 of infection, it increased numbers of Mφ and CD4(+) T cells. On day 10 of infection, the virus titer was undetectable in spleen and liver of BSO-treated mice, while it was detectable in control mice. Although spleen of both control and BSO-treated mice showed similar CTL activities on day 10 after infection, serum level of IFN-gamma in BSO-treated mice was higher. Furthermore, BSO treatment upregulated suppressor function of Mφ in spleen. These results show that BSO exhibited a striking antiviral effect against MCMV infection which may be mediated by increasing of Mφ number and function, and IFN-gamma production.

Stephen Harrod Buhner is an Earth poet and the award-winning author of ten books on nature, indigenous cultures, the environment, and herbal medicine. He comes from a long line of healers including Leroy Burney, Surgeon General of the United States under Eisenhower and Kennedy, and Elizabeth Lusterheide, a midwife and herbalist who worked in rural Indiana in the early nineteenth century. The greatest influence on his work, however, has been his great-grandfather C.G. Harrod who primarily used botanical medicines, also in rural Indiana, when he began his work as a physician in 1911

Antiviral screening of British Columbian medicinal plants.
McCutcheon AR1, Roberts TE, Gibbons E, Ellis SM, Babiuk LA, Hancock RE, Towers GH.
One hundred methanolic plant extracts were screened for antiviral activity against seven viruses. Twelve extracts were found to have antiviral activity at the non-cytotoxic concentrations tested. The extracts of Rosa nutkana and Amelanchier alnifolia, both members of the Rosaceae, were very active against an enteric coronavirus. A root extract of another member of the Rosaceae, Potentilla arguta, completely inhibited respiratory syncytial virus. A Sambucus racemosa branch tip extract was also very active against respiratory syncytial virus while the inner bark extract of Oplopanax horridus partially inhibited this virus. An extract of Ipomopsis aggregata demonstrated very good activity against parainfluenza virus type 3. A Lomatium dissectum root extract completely inhibited the cytopathic effects of rotavirus. In addition to these, extracts prepared from the following plants exhibited antiviral activity against herpesvirus type 1: Cardamine angulata, Conocephalum conicum, Lysichiton americanum, Polypodium glycyrrhiza and Verbascum thapsus.

Echinacea: a Miracle Herb against Aging and Cancer? Evidence In vivo in Mice. Sandra C. Miller
Echinacea has been viewed as an immunoenhancing herb since it became commercially available several years ago. Indeed, its medicinal significance is responsible for billions of dollars in worldwide sales annually. Unfortunately, most of the ‘evidence’ for the purported medicinal efficacy of Echinacea has been anecdotal and, moreover, to this day, there is no formal proof on how to achieve the best results—whether it should be consumed daily throughout life as a prophylactic; consumed by either young or old; or consumed after diseases, such as cancer, have taken hold. Our work over the past 5 years has led to conclusive answers to some of these questions, at least in mice. Our results have shown that daily consumption of Echinacea is indeed prophylactic, extends the life span of aging mice, significantly abates leukemia and extends the life span of leukemic mice. Given that humans are 97% genetically common with mice and that virtually all our basic physiology is identical, it is neither unjustified to extrapolate these observations to humans nor would it be an arduous task to perform many of these studies in humans, thus establishing viable scientific evidence replacing the anecdotal.

[Anti-virus research of triterpenoids in licorice].
[Article in Chinese]
Pu JY1, He L2, Wu SY2, Zhang P2, Huang X2.
Licorice is a leguminous plant of glycyrrhiza. It is a traditional Chinese herbal medicine. Triterpenoid is one of the mainly active components of licorice. In recent years, the broad-spectrum antiviral activity of many triterpenoids in licorice was confirmed, and these findings have become a hot spot of antiviral immunity. The triterpenoids of licorice has the potential to become a novel broad-spectrum antiviral medicine and will be widely used in the clinical treatment. This review provided a summary of the recent anti-virus research progress on several triterpenoids in licorice, such as glycyrrhizic acid, glycyrrhizin, glycyrrhetinic acid and its derivatives. The antiviral roles of triterpenoids in licorice against herpes virus, HIV, hepatitis virus, SARS coronavirus and influenza virus were briefly summarized.

Fresh ginger (Zingiber officinale) has anti-viral activity against human respiratory syncytial virus in human respiratory tract cell lines.
Chang JS1, Wang KC, Yeh CF, Shieh DE, Chiang LC.
Ginger, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, is a common spice and also a widely used medicinal plant in ancient China. Ginger is an ingredient of Ge-Gen-Tang (Kakkon-to; GGT). GGT has been proved to have antiviral activity against human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV). However, it is unknown whether ginger is effective against HRSV.
AIM OF THE STUDY:To find a readily available agent to manage HRSV infection, the authors tested the hypothesis that ginger can effectively decrease HRSV-induced plaque formation in respiratory mucosal cell lines.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:Effect of hot water extracts of fresh and dried gingers on HRSV was tested by plaque reduction assay in both human upper (HEp-2) and low (A549) respiratory tract cell lines. Ability of ginger to stimulate anti-viral cytokines was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).
RESULTS:Fresh ginger dose-dependently inhibited HRSV-induced plaque formation in both HEp-2 and A549 cell lines (p
CONCLUSIONS:Fresh, but not dried, ginger is effective against HRSV-induced plaque formation on airway epithelium by blocking viral attachment and internalization.

21) Respiratory Syncytial Virus Respiratory syncytial virus is also a single-strand, enveloped RNA virus with high variation in its genome. It is a very common infection, especially in young children, throughout the world. It causes bronchiolitis and other types of respiratory infections, especially in the lower respiratory tract. It generally presents as a common cold but can sometimes become serious, turning into pneumonia if left untreated. The herbs specific for respiratory syncytial virus infections are Chinese skullcap, Eleutherococcus senticosus, elder, isatis, licorice, and Sophora flavescens. Other herbs found active are Barleria prionitis, Blumea laciniata, Elephantopus scaber, Laggera pterodonta, Markhamia lutea, Mussaenda pubescens, Narcissus tazetta, Selaginella sinensis, Scutellaria indica, and Schefflera octophylla (in vitro). Treatment: The same as for mild influenza. If it becomes serious, the same as for moderate to severe influenza.
Yarnell, Eric. “Herbs for Emerging Viral Infectious Diseases.” Alternative and Complementary Therapies 22.4 (2016): 164-174.
Several coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome [SARS], Middle East respiratory syndrome [MERS]), flavivirus (yellow fever, West Nile, dengue, Zika), and alphavirus (chikungunya, Ebola) infections have, in the past 10–20 years, emerged or reemerged as major problems across large regions of the globe. While, currently, many of these infections are confined to the tropics, global warming, the spread of some mosquito vectors northward, and emergence of temperate-tolerant pathogens such as West Nile virus mean that these problems are increasingly affecting the global north as well. After discussing mosquito-based preventions for the zoonotic infections mentioned in this article, a review of herbal responses to the SARS and MERS epidemics are highlighted. Houttuynia cordata (houttuynia, yú xīng cǎo) and Glycyrrhiza spp. (licorice) stand out as particularly interesting single herbs for addressing these coronavirus infections. Herbal approaches to flavivirus infections, most notably clinical trials of Carica papaya (papaya) leaves for treating dengue fever, are reviewed. A discussion of many of the extensive range of herbs studied to treat flaviviruses in preclinical studies is provided. Potential herbal treatments for alphavirus infections are then presented.

Discovery of berberine, abamectin and ivermectin as antivirals against chikungunya and other alphaviruses.
Varghese FS1, Kaukinen P1, Gläsker S2, Bespalov M3, Hanski L4, Wennerberg K3, Kümmerer BM2, Ahola T5.
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an arthritogenic arbovirus of the Alphavirus genus, which has infected millions of people after its re-emergence in the last decade. In this study, a BHK cell line containing a stable CHIKV replicon with a luciferase reporter was used in a high-throughput platform to screen approximately 3000 compounds. Following initial validation, 25 compounds were chosen as primary hits for secondary validation with wild type and reporter CHIKV infection, which identified three promising compounds. Abamectin (EC50 = 1.5 μM) and ivermectin (EC50 = 0.6 μM) are fermentation products generated by a soil dwelling actinomycete, Streptomyces avermitilis, whereas berberine (EC50 = 1.8 μM) is a plant-derived isoquinoline alkaloid. They inhibited CHIKV replication in a dose-dependent manner and had broad antiviral activity against other alphaviruses–Semliki Forest virus and Sindbis virus. Abamectin and ivermectin were also active against yellow fever virus, a flavivirus. These compounds caused reduced synthesis of CHIKV genomic and antigenomic viral RNA as well as downregulation of viral protein expression. Time of addition experiments also suggested that they act on the replication phase of the viral infectious cycle.

Antiviral activity of berberine and related compounds against human cytomegalovirus.
Hayashi K1, Minoda K, Nagaoka Y, Hayashi T, Uesato S.
Berberine chloride (1) and the structurally related compounds were assessed for the anti-human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) activity using the plaque assay. The anti-HCMV activity (IC(50) 0.68 microM) of 1 was equivalent to that (IC(50) 0.91 microM) of ganciclovir (GCV). The mechanism of action by which 1 inhibits the replication of HCMV is presumed to be different from that of GCV; 1 would interfere with intracellular events after virus penetration into the host cells and before viral DNA synthesis.

Anti-herpes simplex virus effects of berberine from Coptidis rhizoma, a major component of a Chinese herbal medicine, Ching-Wei-San.
Chin LW1, Cheng YW, Lin SS, Lai YY, Lin LY, Chou MY, Chou MC, Yang CC.
Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from Coptidis rhizome. Among the individual herbal components of a Chinese herb medicine, Ching-Wei-San, Coptidis Rhizoma has the most potent antimicrobial activity. By high-pressure liquid chromatography, the quantitative analysis of berberine from 6.25-mg/mL (w/v) Coptidis rhizome extract or 50.00-mg/mL (w/v) Ching-Wei-San was determined to be 0.26 mg/mL. To explore the potential use of Ching-Wei-San against herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection, the cytotoxicity, anti-HSV-1 and anti-HSV-2 activity in Vero cells were assayed. The selectivity index of berberine was about 1.2-1.5 times higher than that of Coptidis rhizome extract and Ching-Wei-San. Moreover, the antiviral activities correspond to the content of berberine in the aqueous solution. Berberine may interfere with the viral replication cycle after virus penetration and no later than the viral DNA synthesis step, and its activities were not affected by the preparation processes. Berberine, the natural plants that contain this component, including Coptidis rhizome, and Ching-Wei-San have all shown anti-HSV effects.

In vivo and in vitro antiviral effects of berberine on influenza virus.
Wu Y1, Li JQ, Kim YJ, Wu J, Wang Q, Hao Y.
To explore the potential effects of berberine on influenza virus infection both in vitro and in vivo.
METHODS:In vitro anti-influenza virus assays were performed by cytopathogenic effect and neuraminidase assays in Madin Darby canine kidney cells. In vivo anti-influenza virus assays were performed on the viral pneumonia model of mice. The numbers of mice that died within day 2 to day 14 postinfection were recorded to calculate the mortality. On days 2, 4, and 6, the viral titers in the lungs were determined by hemagglutination assay; hematoxylin/eosin staining was used to assess the pathogenic changes of lung tissues; the concentrations of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and monocyte specific chemoattractant molecule (MCP-1) were measured by radio immunoassay or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; the concentrations of nitric oxide (NO) and inducible nitric oxide synthetase (iNOS) were detected by colorimetric method; reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the mRNA level of TNF-α and MCP-1.
RESULTS:Berberine showed inhibitory effects on cytopathogenic effects and neuraminidase activity of virus, with the therapeutic index 9.69. In vivo, berberine decreased mice mortality from 90% to 55%, reduced virus titers in the lungs on day 2 postinfection (P
CONCLUSIONS:Berberine exhibited antiviral effects on the influenza virus both in vitro and in vivo. The possible therapeutic mechanism of berberine on influenza-induced viral pneumonia might be inhibiting the virus infection, as well as improving the pathogenic changes by repressing inflammatory substances release.

Breaking News: Mike Adams Natural News web site has been black listed by Google. This means all of the 140,000 pages on the Natural News web site have been deleted from Google search results. This is a form of authoritarian censorship found in dictatorship countries like communist China, Stalinist Russia and of course, Nazi Germany.
I don’t always agree with everything on the Natural News Web site, however, I respect their right to say it.
Information War Escalates to New Level
Free speech censorship could never happen in a free society which enjoys freedom of speech protected by constitutional rights. Obviously, this indicates we do not have freedom of speech on the internet. This form of censorship indicates the “information war” has escalated to a new level, and is a very bad omen for things to come.

Medical Ghostwriting Deemed a Fraud on the Court
Medical Ghostwriting Deemed a Fraud on the Court
by Jeffrey Dach MD
Stern and Lemmens, two Toronto Law Professors, have joined forces in a scathing denouncement of medical ghostwriting in the August 2 PLOS journal.(1) The two law professors cited a 1944 Supreme Court case dealing with ghost writing, Hazel-Atlas Glass v. Hartford-Empire Co. (1944).
In this patent dispute case, the Supreme Court was fooled by a ghost written trade article presented in defense of a patent. A few years later, when Anti-Trust litigation revealed that the article had been “ghost written”, the Court overturned the patent decision, and ruled that ghost writing in the trade literature amounted to a “fraud on the court”, and the lawyers who had used the “ghost written” article were disbarred from practice.(2) This same concept applies to the pharmaceutical industry. Above left image: Ghost Image on cover of old comic book courtesy of wikimedia commons.
Current examples of ghost writing by the drug industry planted into the medical literature include drugs such as:
1) Vioxx (rofecoxib) a heavily promoted anti-inflammatory NSAID drug, later found to cause heart attacks.(3)(10-11)
2) Prempro (combined estrogen/progestin), a synthetic hormone combination drug heavily promoted for years as hormone replacement for women. This was found to cause cancer and heart disease in the WHI (Women’s Health Initiative Study).(4)(12-13)
3) Paxil (paroxetine), an SSRI antidepressant found to be no better than placebo for most patients in treatment for depression, and also found to cause suicidal impulses (5,6).
There are many others. This quote is from the Adriane J. Fugh-Berman article.(4)
“Ghostwriting has been documented for drugs other than Prempro. For example, Forest Laboratories’ 2004 marketing plan for Lexapro (escitalopram) [95], stated: “Bylined articles will allow us to fold Lexapro messages into articles on depression, anxiety and comorbidity developed by (or ghostwritten for) thought leaders” [96]. Ghostwriting has also been documented in the promotion of Paxil (paroxetine) [97]–[100], “Fen-phen” (fenfluramine and phentermine) [101], Neurontin (gabapentin) [102], Vioxx (rofecoxib) [103], and Zoloft (sertraline) [104].”

Antibiotic Resistant Super Bugs
Antibiotic Resistant Super Bugs
by Jeffrey Dach MD
The news media reported a Nevada women who succumbed to bacterial infection with an antibiotic resistant super bug called CRE, short for carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. (1-7)
Normally, antibiotics are quite effective for bacterial infection. However, this Super-Bug had acquired new abilities to resist 26 different antibiotics. How do these super bugs evolve so fast? Antibiotic Resistance is obtained as a trait from other bacteria with the exchange of genetic material called Plasmids. This is called horizontal gene transfer. Sooner or later, every new antibiotic meets with resistant organisms and we need to come up with a new antibiotic. Above image SEM of E Coli courtesy of wikimedia commons.
Natural Antibiotics to the Rescue
Perhaps this unfortunate Nevada patient might have fared better, and may have survived if only her hospital doctors had acquired a copy of the book, Herbal Antibiotics, Natural Alternatives for Treating Drug-resistant Bacteria by Stephen Harrod Buhner .
This book explains exactly what to do if the antibiotics don’t work.
Buhner’s book explains how natural antibiotics are effective alternatives for antibiotic resistant infections. Mr Buhner is a prolific writer and an expert on natural plant antibiotics effective even in the case of antibiotic resistant microbes.(8-10) Left Image Microscopic image of E Coli Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons.
There are so many antimicrobial plant substances, we can’t list them all Here are a few from Dr Buhner’s book:
Herbal Alternatives to Antibiotics
Systemic Herbs
For systemic infections, resistant staph, MRSA, tuberculosis and malaria. etc.
Cryptolepis (Cryptolepis sanguinolenta)
Sida (Sida acuta)
Alchornea (Alchornea cordifolia)
Bidens (Bidens pilosa)
Artemisia (Artemisia annua)
Non-Systemic Herbs
For antibiotic resistant infections of the GI tract, urinary tract and skin.
American goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) Goldenseal : active against E. coli and salmonella.
Juniper (Juniperus spp.)
Usnea (Usnea spp.)
Honey
Synergistic Herbs
enhance immune function.
Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra and G. uralensis)
Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
Black pepper (Piper nigrum and P. longum)
In Conclusion:
We should not be discouraged by the news media reports of antibiotic resistant bacteria killing us off one by one. Very effective treatments with natural antibiotics are available in case the synthetic antibiotics stop working. Your hospital based medical system just doesn’t know about it yet.

6) New CDC Vital Signs: Lethal, Drug-resistant Bacteria Spreading in U.S. Healthcare Facilities
Drug-resistant germs called carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE, are on the rise and have become more resistant to last-resort antibiotics during the past decade, according to a new CDC Vital Signs report. These bacteria are causing more hospitalized patients to get infections that, in some cases, are impossible to treat.
CRE are lethal bacteria that pose a triple threat:
Resistance: CRE are resistant to all, or nearly all, the antibiotics we have – even our most powerful drugs of last-resort.
Death: CRE have high mortality rates – CRE germs kill 1 in 2 patients who get bloodstream infections from them.
Spread of disease: CRE easily transfer their antibiotic resistance to other bacteria. For example, carbapenem-resistant klebsiella can spread its drug-destroying weapons to a normal E. coli bacteria, which makes the E.coli resistant to antibiotics also. That could create a nightmare scenario since E. coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections in healthy people.

Yes, resistant to all available antibiotics. Yes, doctors could do nothing to stop her infection.
12 Herbal Alternatives to Antibiotics
Stephen Harrod Buhner recommends these 12 herbs in his book Herbal Antibiotics (Storey Publishing, 2011). Systemic Herbs These five systemic herbs can be very helpful in treating systemic infections such as resistant staph, MRSA, tuberculosis and malaria. • Cryptolepis (Cryptolepis sanguinolenta) • Sida (Sida acuta) • Alchornea (Alchornea cordifolia) • Bidens (Bidens pilosa) • Artemisia (Artemisia annua) Non-Systemic Herbs These three localized non-systemic herbs treat resistant infections of the GI tract, urinary tract and skin.
• American goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) Goldenseal is also particularly active against most food poisoning bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella.
• Juniper (Juniperus spp.) • Usnea (Usnea spp.) • Honey
Synergistic Herbs Synergistic herbs increase the activity of other herbs. These three will boost inactive resistant bacteria mechanisms, increase the presence of antibacterial agents in the body and enhance immune function. • Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra and G. uralensis) • Ginger (Zingiber officinale) • Black pepper (Piper nigrum and P. longum)

Donald Trump, Autism, Vaccination and Robert Kennedy Jr.
Donald Trump, Autism, Vaccination and Robert Kennedy Jr.
I attended a meeting where the keynote speaker David Katz MD spoke on “Feet, Forks and FIngers” (1) In short, we are killing ourselves by smoking, eating the wrong foods, and not enough exercise. Although this message is important, perhaps Dr Katz has been beating this drum too long. A little variation would keep his audience more engaged. It occurred to me that other public health issues also deserve attention, such as the increasing prevalence of autism, now one in 68 children.(2) Upper image Donald Trump and Robert Kennedy Jr courtesy of NBC Connecticut.
Autism, a Public Health Issue
After the talk, we met the speaker at the back of the hall and ask questions. I approached Dr Katz, introduced myself and asked:
“Wouldn’t you consider increasing autism rate a public health issue? As a member of the public health academic community, why are you not speaking about it? Why didn’t you mention the increasing autism rate in your presentation today? Shouldn’t the public health academic community be leading the way in finding the cause for our increasing autism epidemic?”(3,4)
After an awkward moment of silence, Dr Katz shuffled around and said he really had no answer for my question. I was not surprised by this, as today’s political climate has forced our public health professors and academics into hiding on this issue.
Enforcing Discipline
Authoritarian rulers typically enforce discipline by making an example of dissenters, who are accused of being “enemies of the state” and summarily executed. Such an example was made of Dr Wakefield whose career was destroyed after his research came up with the “wrong findings”. Perhaps this weighs heavily on the minds of academics thinking of studying autism.
Robert Kennedy Jr Announces
This leads us to the announcement last week by Robert Kennedy Jr that the president-elect Mr Trump invited him to chair a committee on vaccine safety. Mr. Kennedy is a known friend of the “anti-vaccination” movement, and a proponent of “vaccine safety” . This announcement was not taken lightly by Big Pharma promptly firing “warning shots across the bow”, sending a message to Team Trump that this is out of bounds and they are not happy. In other words, all hell broke loose in the mainstream media. The sheer volume and energy of the attack by mainstream media was mind boggling. Finally, after about a week or so, it was revealed that the whole thing was a big nothing, there was no invitation, merely a conversation about the idea.
Vaccination, Politics and Safety
If a health professional Injects a drug into a human, this procedure is governed by federal state and local regulations . For example, the patient must consent to the procedure, and the injected drug must have FDA approval. If the drug causes adverse effects as a result of negligence, then the patient has a right to sue the drug maker in court for damages. However for vaccinations, these same rules don’t apply. Some states are repealing vaccine exemptions making vaccination mandatory, forgetting about the requirement for patient consent.
Vaccine Makers Exempt from Liability
In 1986 the Congress passed the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act making the drug makers exempt from liability for their vaccine product. Instead of suing the drug maker in state court, the aggrieved victim of a vaccine injury must take his or her case to the federal vaccine court. Any settlements paid out to the victims of vaccine injury are paid by the federal government, not by the vaccine makers.
According to Sharyl Attkisson, from 1998 to 2015 , over 15,916 claims have been filed in federal vaccine court. 4,121 were compensated, 9,904 were dismissed. The total amount paid to victims is approximately $3.1 billion.(4) The fact that over 3 billion dollars has been paid to victims of vaccine injury suggests there is more work to do if we want safe vaccines. In other words, there may be safety issues with certain vaccines that are not being fully addressed.
The Science is NOT Settled
All of these media attack article say the same thing: “The Science is settled. All vaccines are safe. There is no connection to autism,” This is all true as long as one realizes that the science they are all talking about is industry sponsored science. Researchers are paid to come up with the “correct ” findings for their study. There is a historical precedent called “tobacco science”. The tobacco industry claimed that “science has proven cigarettes are healthy and do not cause cancer.” We know other wise. The reality is the industry sponsored science is tainted, and independent researchers live in fear of reprisals for any breach of silence. This is not a free environment.
Vaccines Should Be Regulated Like Any Other Drug
I think there was a fundamental mistake made by Congress in removing liability from vaccine manufacturers in 1986. Vaccines should be treated and regulated same as any other drug. New vaccines should rise or fall with the marketplace and not be falsely subsidized by the federal government.
Some drugs are FDA approved and then later banned when problems are discovered. Same is true for some vaccines. By removing liability from the vaccine makers, they have no incentive to make vaccines safe. And without liability costs, the vaccines are now more profitable, creating more incentive to make more and more vaccine products, as we have seen over the years.
Some Vaccines Work, Others Are not Worth the Risks
Some drugs are quite effective with few side effects, while others are discarded because they don’t work so well, or they carry horrendous adverse effects . Same for vaccines. Some work. Some don’t and are either not approved or later banned. Examples are the live Sabine polio vaccine discontinued in the US in 2000 because the vaccine itself was causing VAPP, vaccine associated paralytic polio. The Swine flu vaccine was banned in 1976 because of increased Guillan Barre syndrome after vaccination. etc. In Sweden, whole cell pertussis vaccination was suspended in 1979, and was later replaced with a safer acellular Pertussis vaccine.(32-37). In Japan, DTP vaccination was banned in 1993 due to safety concerns.(31) A partial listing of discontinued vaccines can be seen here: Discontinued_Vaccines .(28-29)
The Bill Haast Story Immunity from Snake Venom
An example of vaccination that worked is the Bill Haast story. Suppose you worked in a serpentarium handling venomous snakes. Wouldn’t it be advantageous to have small periodic injections of snake venom so you will eventually be immune to it.? That is exactly what Bill Haast did. Bill Haast built up immunity by injecting himself every day for 60 years with venoms from 32 snake species. (27) This allowed him to survive 173 poisonous snake bites during his career as a snake handler. (27) However, just because it worked for Bill Haast, mandatory snake venom vaccination for all school children is obviously not a good idea.
What Will Trump Do Once In Office ?
Will the president elect Mr. Trump stick by his guns on this issue, or will he back down and fold? Exactly how this plays out is anyone’s guess. We will have to wait until after inauguration January 20, and then see what happens after Mr Trump actually takes office.

In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a British gastroenterologist, described a new autism phenotype called the regressive autism-enterocolitis syndrome triggered by environmental factors such as measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination. The speculative vaccination-autism connection decreased parental confidence in public health vaccination programs and created a public health crisis in England and questions about vaccine safety in North America. After 10 years of controversy and investigation, Dr. Wakefield was found guilty of ethical, medical, and scientific misconduct in the publication of the autism paper. Additional studies showed that the data presented were fraudulent. The alleged autism-vaccine connection is, perhaps, the most damaging medical hoax of the last 100 years.

In Sweden, effectiveness concerns led to a suspension of Sweden’s pertussis vaccination program.Other countries such as the
United Kingdom, Italy, Ireland, Australia, West Germany and Russia saw substantially reduced pertussis vaccine acceptance within their populations. In the US by the mid-1980s, lawsuits related to vaccine safety led several manufacturers to withdraw their DTP vaccines and paved the way to the US National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act in 1986. This act provides funds to compensate for adverse events following immunization. Faced with such widespread apprehension surrounding DTP safety, great efforts were made to develop acellular pertussis vaccines.

Declining pertussis incidence in Sweden following the introduction of acellular pertussis vaccine.
Olin P1, Gustafsson L, Barreto L, Hessel L, Mast TC, Rie AV, Bogaerts H, Storsaeter J.
Acellular pertussis vaccines were introduced nation-wide in Sweden in 1996, 17 years after the withdrawal of whole-cell pertussis vaccine from the childhood immunisation schedule. We report national data on age specific incidence of culture-confirmed Bordetella pertussis for 1986-2000, and clinical follow-up for 3 years (October 1997-September 2000) in children born in 1996-2000 and from children born in 1993-1994 who had participated in a trial of pertussis vaccines. The annual incidence of culture-confirmed B. pertussis was 89-150 per 100,000 before introduction of acellular pertussis vaccines and has dropped to 17-26 per 100,000. The data suggest that unimmunised infants and children who have received only one dose of pertussis vaccine were provided some protection. The decline is most obvious from the second dose onwards and remained stable for 4-5 years after the third dose in the absence of any booster dose. The first signs of waning immunity were observed at 6-7 years of age in the trial cohort. The short-term benefits reflect high vaccination coverage and high initial efficacy. The full impact of the acellular pertussis vaccination programme in infants remains to be established.

BACKGROUND: During the 1990s, the United States switched from combined diphtheria, tetanus toxoids, whole-cell pertussis (DTwP) vaccines to combined acellular pertussis (DTaP) vaccines because of safety concerns. After a 2010–2011 pertussis outbreak, we sought to evaluate whether disease risk in 10 to 17 year olds differed between those who previously received DTwP from those who received DTaP.

Pertussis: History of the Disease and Current Prevention Failure.
Kuchar E1, Karlikowska-Skwarnik M2, Han S3, Nitsch-Osuch A4.
Pertussis or whooping cough has been given many names over the centuries. It was first recognized in the Middle Ages and since then various epidemics have been described. Jules Bordet and Octave Gengou isolated Bordetella pertussis, a causative agent for whooping cough, in Paris more than 100 years ago, which created an excellent opportunity to invent a vaccine. In 1914 the whole-cell pertussis vaccine was invented, then in the 1940s it was combined with tetanus and diphtheria toxoids to become DTP and it became widely available. A successive decrease in the incidence of the disease has since been observed. The vaccine has been about 80 % effective in preventing serious disease and death from pertussis. The disadvantage is that the vaccine offers protection for 5-10 years after the last dose of the full vaccination course. The second issue is the question of how to prevent side effects of the whole-cell vaccine. In the 1990s, the acellular vaccine was introduced in the US and gradually replaced the whole-cell vaccine. About 10 years later, a possible failure with the new vaccine has been observed, that is a lack of long-term protection. Nowadays, both vaccines are used, with the acellular vaccine being vastly predominant in most developed countries. Pertussis incidence has increased since the 1980s, but new prevention strategies include booster doses for specific age groups.

Iodine Crisis by Lynne Farrow Book Review
The Iodine Crisis: What You Don’t Know About Iodine Can Wreck Your Life by Lynne FarrowBook Review by Jeffrey Dach MD
If you are a woman diagnosed with fibrocystic breast disease or breast cancer, you need to read this book. If you are a woman who undergoes repeated breast biopsies or breast cyst aspirations, then you need to read this book. If you are a breast cancer survivor, then you need to read this book.
As an interventional radiologist for 30 years, my job was to read the mammograms and perform the procedures, the breast biopsies and needle aspirations. Some women had multiple cysts and nodules and returned to the department every year for repeat aspirations and biopsy procedures. They would always corner me in the reading room and ask, “Doctor, what can I do to make these cysts and nodules in my breast go away”? And for 30 years I would throw up my hands and say “we just don’t know”.. .
After I retired from radiology and returned to clinical medicine in 2004, I attended medical meetings and listened to David Brownstein MD and George Flechas MD speaking about the health benefits of Iodine supplementation.
Iodine is the answer to fibrocystic breast disease. Iodine is the answer for breast cancer prevention. Iodine is the answer I should have been giving to all the women over the years I worked in the hospital X-ray department, but didn’t. So I am making up for it now. We routinely test for Iodine level, and give Iodine supplements to every woman in my clinic. I consider this extremely important. by Lynne Farrow
Lynne Farrow is a gifted writer and her book chronicles in exquisite detail her personal story and discovery of Iodine and her journey as an Iodine advocate. Her book describes how Iodine was used for decades as a natural medicine, and then virtually eliminated from mainstream medicine and our food in the 1960’s by bad research. You will find it difficult to put this book down. There is much more of the story to be told, so go ahead and get yourself a copy and read it over and over again. Share it with your friend, and go online to Lynne Farrow’s BreastCancerChoices.org and the Iodine Group.to spread the word and spark a new revolution in the use of Iodine . You can share with Lynne Farrow her mission to restore Iodine back to Medicine and kick off a grass roots campaign to prevent breast cancer.
