Excerpt
âTraining a zombie is not a stupid idea. Everyone will be so jealous and theyâll want one. But weâll be the only ones who can train them. Not only will we be popular, but weâll be rich,â said Max, quickly changing the conversation away from Kellyâs pool party as fast as he could. It irked him that Eddy Pratt, the geekiest kid in school got invited to the party and he, Kellyâs soon-to-be boyfriend, didnât. How could Eddy Pratt be ranked higher than him on the school social ladder? How could Chad get invited and not him? It didnât make any sense.
Max banged his fist against his head. It did too make sense. Eddy didnât get invited because he was cool or anything like that. He got invited because his dadâs a zombie exterminator.
âTraining a zombie like itâs some sort of pet is not only the most stupid idea Iâve ever heard, it wonât work. No way!â Chad opened his locker and put several books inside. âAll youâre gonna do is break a whole lot of laws. Besides, Iâve already told Mr. Carter weâre doing an experiment to show how volcanoes create islands.â
âAnd how is showing how volcanoes create islands going to make us popular?â
âItâll win us the science fair.â
âBut if we train a zombie, weâll not only win the science fair, weâll be doing the town a huge favor.â
âHow? By getting ourselves put in jail or worse like â you know â infected? No! Thank! You! There are rules about zombies for a reason. They are extremely infectiousâ¦â

Kristen was gone.
She wasn’t at work. She wasn’t at home. She hadn’t gone out to run an errand. She had simply … vanished.
New Orleans Detective Sam Walker stood in the center of his fiancée’s cluttered bedroom and struggled to piece together the timeline of her disappearance. Last night they were supposed to meet for dinner, but he’d caught a case. They’d talked on the phone around eleven, and he’d asked her to meet him for lunch today.
He hadn’t spoken to her since.
She was supposed to arrive at the Victim and Witness Assistance Unit for work at nine a.m., but never made it. One of her co-workers had called him about ten o’clock. He’d tried Kristen again, but she hadn’t answered.
So he’d come here and found her car in the driveway.
Yet she sure as hell wasn’t here.
Her bed was meticulously made, the way she left it every morning, dumping him out if he’d stayed over. A damp towel lay beside the bathroom sink. Soulful jazz drifted from the iPod dock on her nightstand. What terrified him most, though, was the spot of blood marring the door frame and the lone pink sandal lying in the living room floor beside her purse, keys, and cell phone.
His heart lurched. He couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. Simply could not absorb that she was missing. They’d been engaged for five months and three days, with only a month to go until the wedding. They should be mulling over the guest list, squabbling about where to go for their honeymoon, and deciding where they wanted to live.
Instead, Sam stared at an empty bed.
“There’s no sign of forced entry, so she either let the guy in or he jumped her when she went after the paper this morning.” Major Sabbatini’s voice seemed to come from far away. “I’m thinking she fought him off and ran, and he caught her here in the bedroom.”
“She would have clawed him.” Hell, she would’ve drawn blood with those nails. Sam should know. He had the marks on his back to prove it. Moisture blurred his vision as he eyed the smudge on the door jamb. “She … she just had her nails done a couple of days ago. They’re like talons.”
“We’ll check the blood for DNA. You know that. What were her plans for today?”
“Um … just work, far as I know. She and I were supposed to have lunch.” Sam shook his head. “Then tonight, she was going to a wedding shower. I just–”
“When was the last time you spoke with her?”
“Late — last night.” Sam’s eyes fell on a partially-filled mug on the table beside Kristen’s favorite chair, where she liked to read. A hard knot formed in the center of his chest. “She didn’t … even finish her coffee. She loves coffee.”
“We’re gonna find her, son.”
“You don’t know that.” Sam’s voice cracked. He turned to his boss. “What if I never see her again?”

Book Shout-Out: The Debt Collector Series by Susan Kaye Quinn & GIVEAWAY
%Úte%% | J.C. Martin
The Debt Collector series is the latest offering from author Susan Kaye Quinn.
***Read on for giveaway details***
The Debt Collector series
[1-3 (Delirium, Agony, Ecstasy) of the Debt Collector serial. Contains mature content and themes. For young-adult-appropriate thrills, see Susan's bestselling Mindjack series.]
What’s your life worth on the open market?
A debt collector can tell you precisely.
Lirium plays the part of the grim reaper well, with his dark trenchcoat, jackboots, and the black marks on his soul that every debt collector carries. He’s just in it for his cut, the ten percent of the life energy he collects before he transfers it on to the high potentials, the people who will make the world a better place with their brains, their work, and their lives. That hit of life energy, a bottle of vodka, and a visit from one of Madam Anastazja’s sex workers keep him alive, stable, and mostly sane … until he collects again. But when his recovery ritual is disrupted by a sex worker who isn’t what she seems, he has to choose between doing an illegal hit for a girl whose story has more holes than his soul or facing the bottle alone — a dark pit he’s not sure he’ll be able to climb out of again.
The first three episodes of the Debt Collector serial are collectively the length of a short novel, or 152 pages. These are the first three of nine episodes in the first season of The Debt Collector serial. This dark and gritty future-noir is about a world where your life-worth is tabulated on the open market and going into debt risks a lot more than your credit rating. Episode 4, Broken, releases 4/17/13. For more about the Debt Collector serial, see DebtCollectorSeries.com.

Excerpt from Delirium (Debt Collector 1)
My jackboots are new, the latest ultra-light material out of Hong Kongâs synthetics district, and they make a strange squeaking sound against the hospital floor. Itâs the kind of sound that might gather snickers or a raised eyebrow, but no one looks at me, at least not on purpose. I stroll past the ICU desk, taking my time, breathing in the antiseptic smell that masks the odor of death held back by machines and drugs and round-the-clock care. The nurses duck their heads and study their charts, ignoring me. As if catching my eye might mean Iâm coming to collect their debt, rather than Mr. Henryâs in Room 301.
The floor is so highly polished that I see the reflection of my trenchcoat running ahead of me, black as a midnight grave, a spook that lives on the surface of the oft-scrubbed tiles. It reaches the door to 301 before me and disappears in the dim, flickering light coming from the room. The spook has gone back where he belongs, into the dark recesses of my soul, assuming I still have one. If I was a betting man, I would say the odds of having a soul keep getting longer with every transfer I do. The older debt collectors, the ones who are still alive, donât have anything shining out of their dull-glass eyes, even when theyâre hyped up on a transfer. Thereâs no telling what my eyes look like.
I stopped looking in the mirror a long time ago.
Mr. Henryâs hooked up in all the usual places â tubes in his arms and monitor patches hovering over his temples and the blue-veined skin of his chest. His knobbed knees and shriveled legs stick out the end of the blanket. I donât know if heâs tossed the blanket aside or the nurses just forgot to cover him up again after his sponge bath or whatever they do to prepare patients for a debt transfer. Goosebumps raise the hair on whatâs left of his legs into a small forest of gray fur. I tug the thin, white-weave blanket over his exposed legs, and Mr. Henry opens his eyes.
Theyâre pale green and watery â washed out and used up like the rest of him.
âYouâve come for me,â he says.

Cover Reveal: CROSSROADS by Jonathan Lister
%Úte%% | J.C. Martin
Big welcome to Jonathan Lister to the J. Taylor Publishing family! Today is the official cover reveal day for his debut novel, paranormal suspense Crossroads:
Crossroads
Werewolf. Bar bouncer. Dad. Standard traits for any self-respecting, reformed criminal, living under the radar in Demos City. For Leon Gray, normal is what he wants â for himself and his not-yet-changed teenage daughter.
Playing bodyguard to crusading reporter David Hastings would totally ruin Leonâs peace, especially since Hastings has hired killers on his trail, pros who know how he takes his espresso in the morning, and where Leon lives.
The payoff, though, would fill up Shaunaâs empty college fund, and in a battle between opportunity and ordinary, money wins. He just has to keep Hastings alive long enough to cash the check.
If only he didnât have to save his daughter, too.
As a budding wolf, sheâs piqued the interest of a local pack Alpha â one Leon knows will steal Shauna right out from under him the first chance he gets.
Leon isnât about to give up on his daughter or Hastings, and will fight for both longer than it took Demos City to see werewolves as equals to humans.
He can only hope it doesnât take a thousand years.
Intriguing blurb, no?
Crossroads will be released on November 4th, 2013.

Excerpt
Without a word, Matthew reached out, took Emily by the hand and pulled her down beside him. He looked into her eyes and smiled. âI knew my Emily was still in there.â Out of the blue, the room became incredibly hot, as if Gabriel had entered in order to give a lesson to his favorite students. âWhat?â
âThat spark.â He pulled Emilyâs face closer before she could push herself away. âYouâve been acting all this time like youâre just here to sit and wait it out until youâre lucky enough to go Home. But youâre still in there, Emily. You still have all that energy and belief in there and you want to do something. Thatâs the partner I know.â
Shaking her head, Emily listened to her own breathing intensify as she stared at his full lips and wondered why she felt so completely and utterly strange … vulnerable even. âI want to help this girl. This is a job, maybe my only job down here. She saw a ghost and she wants me to help her out, thatâs all.â
âAnd you will.â Matthew captured Emilyâs lips, and she could no longer feel the breath in her lungs. Completely different than the one kiss theyâd shared up above so long ago, this one was far more demanding, as if Matthew was a young man determined to kiss his human love for the very first time.
Sitting back, Emily practically jumped off the bed.
âIâm sorry,â she heard him whisper behind her. âI guess I was just excited to see you again.â
Not trusting her voice, she remained silent.
âWe have jobs, but we also have a life to live. Our own lives this time around. Maybe you should think about adding that into your angelic plans.â Matthew continued softly, âJason isnât here, Emily.â
The name being said out loud sent a chill down Emilyâs spine. It reminded her of the vow sheâd made a long time ago â a vow that an angel couldnât break.
She cleared her throat. âIt doesnât matter if heâs here. We were sent to do a job, and maybe helping this little girl prove her story is what I need to begin.â
Standing up, Matthew looked as if he was a man who wanted nothing more than to turn back the clock and erase the name heâd spoken aloud. He walked to the open window. âWell, I hope the job goes well. Good luck with it.â
âMatthew,â Emily took a step toward him. âDonât leave like this.â
He nodded at the book on the bed. âYou have your mission, Emily … your job. Ghosts, goblins, lost souls â knock yourself out.â He took a deep breath. âI wonder when youâre going to figure out that the living souls around you would like some of your attention as well.â
Closing her eyes, Emily shed silent tears as she heard his feet hit the ground beneath her window. A friend, a partner, the one who actually listened, was now just an angry young man racing back to The Armory â a place where warriors reigned.
Emily sighed. Sheâd done it again. No matter how hard she tried to be good, her mouth always got her into trouble. She needed Matthew to understand. Sheâd made a promise to a young man a long time ago; a promise that was supposed to last for eternity. How was she to know at the time that their eternity would include death by her hand?
Had the second time around broken their vow? Emily had no idea. But whatever happened she could not and would not offer Matthew her heart if payment was still due for her past sins. Above all, Matthew was the last person who deserved to be punished for her mistakes.

Excerpt
Even in the shade of the graffiti-carved olive tree, the air sang with heat. Dahoud listened to the hum of voices in the tavern garden, the murmured gossip about royals and rebels. If patrons noticed him, they would only see a young clerk sitting among the lord-satrap’s followers, a harmless bureaucrat. Dahoud planned to stay harmless.
The tavern bustled with women – whiteseers hanging about in the hope of earning a copper, traders celebrating deals, bellydancers clinking finger cymbals – women who neither backed away from him nor screamed.
The youngest of the entertainers wound her way between the benches towards their table, the tassels on her slender hips bouncing, the rows of copper rings on her sash tinkling with every snaky twist. Since she seemed nervous, as if it was her first show, he sent her an encouraging smile. Ignoring him, she shimmied to Lord Govan.
The djinn slithered inside Dahoud, stirring a stream of fury, whipping his blood into a hot storm. Would she dare to disregard the Black Besieger? What lesson would he teach to punish her insolence?
Dahoud stared past her sweat-glistening torso, the urge to subdue her washing over him in a boiling wave. For three years, he had battled against the djinn’s temptations. To indulge in fantasies would batter his defences and breach his resistance. He focused on the flavours on his tongue, the tart citron juice and the sage-spiced mutton, on the tender texture of the meat.
