What a charmed life I've led, working for newspapers in four states, covering breaking news and world class entertainers. And I've saved the best for last, writing mystery/thrillers from the Florida Keys in the winter and a Michigan lakeside in the summer. Life is good. Thank you God.

Full Moon Friday, the third book in my Jordan Daily News Mystery Series, is about a day when the full moon coincides with Friday the 13th and everything goes wrong. Crazy phone calls and strange happenings are running rampant. (less)

Republicans at every level -- The Save Act in Congress, a House bill in Michigan and now an executive order -- are demanding proof of citizenship for voters. It seems like a reasonable expectation, but current proposals are weighed down with unreasonable restrictions. Women who adopted their husband's last name wouldn't match their birth certificate. “Losing a mate to death is devastating but it's not a personal attack like divorce. When somebody you love stops loving you and walks away, it's an insult beyond comparison.”
Sue Merrell, Great News Town

“I don’t know what makes people start wanting each other any more than I know what makes it stop all of a sudden. I just know that when you lose it once, you’ll never take it for granted again”
Sue Merrell, Great News Town

“Never trust a man who dresses too well or stays too clean. It ain't natural and whatever he's up to probably ain't legal.”
Sue Merrell, One Shoe Off

“Reporters can't douse flames or soothe burns. They have no control over the horrors they witness. But if they can overcome fear and physical obstacles and wrestle the monster to the page before the sun comes up, it's a victory -- not just for the newspaper staff but for all those sleeping soundly who will find the facts at their fingertips and all those victims whose suffering won't go unnoticed.”
Sue Merrell, Great News Town

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Sue Merrell I'm surprised that less than 400 have signed up to win a free copy of One Shoe Off. Last year, more than a thousand registered for Great News Town. But there are lots of books available for giveaway, including "Kinsey and Me" by one of my favorite authors, Sue Grafton. How's that for competition?

Sue Merrell Thought my book reading friends might enjoy today's poem from Writers' Almanac

Used Book
by Julie Kane

What luck—an open bookstore up ahead
as rain lashed awnings over Royal Street,
and then to find the books were secondhand,
with one whole wall assigned to poetry;
and then, as if that wasn't luck enough,
to find, between Jarrell and Weldon Kees,
the blue-on-cream, familiar backbone of
my chapbook, out of print since '83—
its cover very slightly coffee-stained,
but aging (all in all) no worse than flesh
though all those cycles of the seasons since
its publication by a London press.
Then, out of luck, I read the name inside:
The man I thought would love me till I died.
