More Wintry Stories at Darkness&Good

Apparently this is somewhat of a minor theme in my D&G stories of late? Anyway, your semi-regular reminder that weekly (unedited) fiction by myself and Liana Brooks goes on over at the Darkness&Good blog. Today’s story’s about a girl and her wolf. Rah.

Be An Inky Awards Judge!

In recognition of the fact that there are potentially a decent handful of teens who occasionally peruse this blog, if you are Australian an aged 12 – 20, and have time to read 20 books in 3 months, you should totally consider applying to be an Inky Awards judge this year! The judging period begins in May, applications to be a judge are open now, and you can find all the details on how to apply right here.

Happy reading! :o)

Fact: Gender Stereotypes are Stupid.

Son is 3 years and a double handful of weeks old. He never stops moving, loves throwing balls, kicking balls, catching balls; driving cars, trucks, buses, trains; makes dinosaur noises and squeals like a pig; would live in a sandpit if he could convince adults this was remotely plausible; and his current favourite colour is pink. Pink castle stickers, pink pencils, pink counters when we attempt to play Connect 4.

Gender stereotypes are the stupidest things in the world.

“Stories are supposed to lift people UP!”

Having just had a discussion with my husband last night about writing dark-ish stories, this is so on point.

If you do just one random thing today, let it be this. This is the most powerful expression of why dark stories need to exist.

It’s pictures, and it’ll take you all of a minute to read. Head over to Akimbo Comics and have a look now.

“Lighten Up”

Possibly the single most beautiful and profound discussion of racial discrimination I’ve ever seen. It’s gentle, it’s lovely, and it’s all in pictures!

But seriously, it’s lovely. And profound. Check it out.

Please Don’t Give Up

There are days when you just want to wash your hands and quit humanity. You know the kind. Maybe someone (or a whole host of someones) was rude to you; maybe people were petty or spiteful or jealous or rude. Maybe the news is a nightmare, with people taking advantage of everybody else, with the powerful lording it over the under-powered, with other people not caring or people whose opinion you respect and admire turning against something you believe in, and you feel betrayed. Maybe you’re jus...

Last Chance For Think Sideways Writing Course Until 2016

Just a quick announcement that in about 30 hours, Holly Lisle’s biggest course, How To Think Sideways, will close registration for the rest of the year. She’s been making noises for a while now about moving her big courses to once-a-year-only registration, and that time is here.

The cons: You only get a limited time each year to sign up. The pros: You get to work through the course material with a live cohort in the really active forums. Don’t underestimate how beneficial this is; having other...
