Elsewhere
Just a quick note to, er, note (sorry :D) that I am using my LiveJournal again. This blog is more for actual posts about actual topics, linkage, book reviews, etc. The LiveJournal, she is for the nitty-gritty of writing like daily wordcounts. Don’t expect insight or usefulness over there; however, if you happen to want updates on what I’m writing, that’s the place to go :)
Link to tonight’s post, wherein I also note that fact that I made art today for the first time in literally years :) (yes,...

I Need Feminism Because…
Found this great project by Cambridge University today on Twitter, via a friend (I forget who, sorry). Basically, they had a bunch of personal-sized whiteboards and asked passers-by (presumably students in the main) why they needed feminism. The results are obvious, shocking, enlightening, and heart-breaking, and seriously, you should go have a look right now. Here’s the link.
At the end of the images is a tiny little link to the facebook page, whereon there are heaps more of the images – here...

Testing, Testing, 4, 9, 7…
I’m procrastinating from marking and reports and more marking by twiddling with my Goodreads author profile – and I need a test post. So here it is. Rah! *\o/*
If I even REMOTELY had some spare brain right now, I’d post something worth reading.
Alack.

Men Are Not Brainless Sheep (Shocking, I Know)
“Shocking? What? Why should this concept be shocking?” I hear you ask. To which I counter: why is it not? How is it not, when so many of the fundamental assumptions our society is based on are designed to tell men that they are wild, uncontrollable, savages to be tamed, creatures of undeniable violent instinct who, when confronted with a flash of skin, a hint of cleavage, or – heaven forbid!! – butt or upper thigh, cannot help themselves; they MUST HAVE THAT FLESH NOW.
Yes, I’m talking about f...

This Is How We Party…
Family friend’s 18th party on Sunday, and it was the family team at work in all our usual roles: Mum on food, Jess on decorations, me on cake, and Em on stand-by/gofer/jack-of-all. Friend wanted a picnic in the park–less clean up, good choice!–and the weather held out, which is not usual for this time of year in Canberra–it’s usually teeth-blisteringly freezing by now.
Picnic in the park; pretty simple, right? Ha. This is how we party.

(There were originally a whole bunch of paper lanterns hang...
I Can’t
I cannot change others, save others or wait for others to change before I change myself.
I can’t wait for others to take care of themselves before I take care of myself.
I can’t wait for circumstances to change before I take ownership of my own happiness.
I can’t wait for others to recognize my talent before I start exercising my gifts.
I can’t wait for someone to rescue me before I save myself.
I can’t wait for others to join me before I embark on the journey.
Yes. Just, yes.

On the Cost of Making Art
Years ago, when I first started getting serious about writing, I had a conversation with a friend of mine who dabbled in photography. He was rather firmly of the opinion that artist should not charge for art, that no one actually has a right to make a living as an artist, despite being someone who spent a significant portion of his time making art.* At the time, I wasn’t sure what I thought: I was dabbling with the idea of ‘being a writer’, or writing seriously for publication, of choosing a...

Made Of
So, there’s this fun link (here) where you type in ‘your’ name, and it tells you what you are made of. I typed in my name, and here is the result:
Amy Laurens is made of waffles, octopi, and shadows. With a dash of Twitter.
Which I take to mean that I am am sweet, quirky, and have a dark side – and I talk a lot. Sounds about right! :D hehe.
Amusingly enough, it works pretty well for characters, too. Liana has convinced me to pull out How Not To Take Over The World again (which is good; I’ve been...
