Friday Favorite: A Letter to the North American Church

Friday FavoritesThis post from Ann Voskamp. That is my favorite from the week.

Her beautiful words and this beautiful truth and those beautiful pictures.

Yes, this….

You don’t wait until you have more before you give to God – you give now so you get to become more in God. The children are all smiling and singing and there’s all this light coming like dappled deliverance through the leaves.”

And this…

It’s not having much that makes you rich — it’s the giving much that makes you rich. Give and you are the rich.”...

What’s Your “This”?

HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMASDo you believe in God’s goodness?

It’s a question I’ve had to ask myself lately.

In my head, yes. Of course I believe God is good.

But sometimes my heart isn’t as readily agreeable as my head.

I think sometimes, I fall into the trap of gauging God’s goodness based on the circumstances of the moment.

He heals a sick loved one.

He restores a marriage.

He blesses someone with a child.

He gives us the dream we’ve been chasing.

And God. Is. Good!

But what about when the loved one dies or the marriage ends o...

Friday Favorite: Rubber Legs

Friday FavoritesI went running for the first time in two years this week……TWICE!

Sure, my legs were sore as all get out the next day.

Sure, I huffed and puffed like a train engine.

But it sure felt good to get the heart pumping!

And get this. The first day, as I’m chugging along, I pass this older gentleman who smiles at me and says, “Good job!”

I love the way God gives us those little winks of encouragement.

Let’s Talk: Working out….love it or hate it?

Congo

CongoWill you be posting about your trip to Congo?

Several people asked this question when I returned.

Only I didn’t know how to answer.

I thought I would write. I thought I would fill a whole journal with words upon words after returning. Writing is how I process, after all.

But every time I sat down and picked up a pen, I would stare awhile at the blank page.

Then I would set the pen down and close the empty journal and do something, anything else.

Because how does one put into words all that is Congo...

Safe Haven: A NYT Best Selling Experiment

safe havenIt’s long past due for another NYT Best Selling review!

The reason they’re taking so long is because the books have a long wait list at my local library.

Go figure.

Okay, so let me recap how this works.

I choose a book from the NYT best sellers list and commit to reading the first fifty pages, after which, I vlog two reviews–a review for readers, and a review for writers.

The reader review is your standard review.

The writer review, however, is different. This is where I attempt to figure out how t...

Friday Favorite: Top 5 Combos

Friday FavoritesEvery Sunday morning, my husband ventures out into the wide world to get us donuts and coffee.

He tweeted the other day that the two–donuts and coffee–are one of his top five favorite combinations.

Then he made the hashtag #Top5Combo, inviting others to share their favorites.

Here are mine….

my Bible and early morning silence

my boys and goofiness

a good book and a rainy day

diet coke and uninterrupted writing time

taco soup & a blustery winter evening

Let’s Talk: Share some of your favorite combos!

I’...

Happy Memorial Day & a Schedule Change

flagHappy Memorial Day! With a special shout out to all those courageous men and women who fight or have fought for our freedom here in America. God bless you!

This marks the beginning of summer.

Maybe not technically, since summer doesn’t officially begin until June 21st.

But in my world, and I suspect in many a people’s worlds, summer runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

So thus marks the beginning of my new summer schedule.

Why a new schedule?

Because who has time to stay indoors, writing (or readin...

Friday Favorite: The Sixth Man

Friday FavoritesHowdy friends!

This week’s Friday favorite is about my friend and fellow adoptive mama, Jenny Hoffman.

She and her family have been, like me, traveling the adoption journey for a looooong time.

They are adopting a little boy from Korea named Noah.

Recently, adoptions from Korea changed (like international adoptions are so apt to do) and a 2nd trip to the country is now required.

The Hoffman’s went from being fully funded to not so much. International airfare for two is no cheap thing.

They need to...

Handling the Wait

psalm 42 1I often think that God brought me on the publishing journey to prepare me for the adoption one.

Both roads involve loads of uncertain waiting, which is the worst kind.

In my pursuit for publication, as I waited and waited and waited for that coveted phone call from my agent, I honestly reached a point where I was praising God in the midst of the silence.

Don’t get me wrong.

The waiting was no joke. The silence was torture.

But I felt so close to Him in the midst of it.

I came to this point where Je...
