Reading on Planes and Ships

As the departure date for my vacation approaches, the To-Do list remains long, but I'm chipping away at it. I have one week to be ready. I will meet that deadline one way or another.

A subset of that list is the To-Read list. I just finished (about five minutes ago) Toni Dwiggins' Volcano Watch. I love this forensic geology series. I liked this second book just as much as the first one, Badwater. Except for the fact that Volcano Watch leaves me with an aching heart. I get that writers are...

Living with Geeks

Tomorrow is Pi Day, and we always celebrate in style. We went for it early this year, because we had friends over for lunch. I couldn't see the point in making a dessert for today, then making a pie for us tomorrow.

So we ran the numbers, and my brilliant, engineer husband determined something about today's date being 3.135…(give-or-take *mumbly-bumbly*), and we could round that off to 3.14, and therefore! it would be just fine to make the pie and serve it for dessert today.

As long as we...

Titanic Quiz and and Discussions at Goodreads

My goodness, time goes so fast. In just a couple of weeks, I'll be setting off on my Titanic-themed vacation, culminating in a cruise to trace Titanic's route through the Atlantic. We do plan on ending up in New York!

To get everyone in the spirit of the thing, I've started a book discussion over at Goodreads. You can join it, here. Feel free to post questions or comments of your own, and please let your friends know. While it helps to have read the book, it's not necessary. There is plenty...

Malpractice is Legal, if the Patient is a Pregnant Woman

I don't rant much about politics, although it does come up sometimes in food, childbirth, or breastfeeding topics. But this is simply unbelievable.

How can these states justify these laws? How could the Supreme Court NOT hear a case challenging it? I can't think of anything that is more obviously wrong. Yet it is being done.

A Post of Links

My computer has reached is regularly-scheduled screw-up time, where every move requires a minute of watching the little dinosaur  jog in place.

Our ancestors would never believe the lives we lead.

To prove it, I'm going to post links to just a few of the headlines that caught my eye today.

To ease you into it, I'll start with Ria Majumdar's post over at Novel Publicity. It's a simple-as-pie description for writing a good plot. Even I understood it, so you folks should sail through it.

Then...

A Free Day for The Farm

Oh my, look at the date. My calendar tells me that The Farm is having another free day at Amazon, and I never even told anybody. Thank you for letting me correct that. If you haven't read it yet, this is your last chance to get it for free, at least for a while.

Here's the blurb for this SF short story:

In the 25th century, the human race is scattered throughout the galaxy's Sagittarius Arm. But no matter where people go, they always remain human…

Amy Longfellow, and her eleven-year-old...

Cooking Post with a Picture

Ever since I closed my cooking blog, I've been forgetting to take pictures of food. For all you chemistry majors out there, I am a perfect example of something seeking the lowest energy level attainable.

But! Tonight I took a picture:

Whole wheat pasta with my homemade sausage, shallots, chopped carrots, chard, and fennel seeds simmered in a white wine sauce.

Served with fresh Parmesan cheese, and a nice Chardonnay – 2009 Sonoma Hills.

It doesn't get much easier than this. While the pasta is...
