Young Thomas Andrews and the Kitten

I wanted to tell some extra stories about Thomas Andrews, in honor of his birthday on February 7. This story is a fictionalized account of a true event, documented in several sources about Mr. Andrews. It's an oft-told story that demonstrates his natural compassion.

Hope you like it!

Halfway to Spring

Welcome Imbolc! This is the time of lambing in the northern hemisphere, and to celebrate nature's provision of milk for infants. I hereby declare that makes it a good night to have nutmeg/vanilla pudding for dessert!

Stay tuned for Titanic happenings on the blog. There will be more Time Travel Journal entries, but first, we'll commemorate a special birthday next week: Thomas Andrews was born February 7, 1873, at Ardara House, the family home in Comber, Ireland. Over on Goodreads, I'll be...

John Scalzi takes action for Planned Parenthood. I think this is very important.

Boring Weight Post

Being a woman of a "certain age," I am forever watching my weight. From a literal 95-pound weakling in high school, I've grown to… well, I've grown.

I love food. You can take that statement to mean that I love to eat food, and that I eat LOTS of it. That's not what I mean by it, though. I do love to eat, but mostly, I love the shapes, colors, textures, flavor, and sheer diversity of food. I love information about food. What it does to and for our bodies. What our bodies do with it.

I don't...

Warning! Food Snob at Work

Remember grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup? When I was a kid, it was Campbell's soup, made with water. The bread was Rainbow white, spread with margarine – the soft kind that came in a tub. The cheese was sliced American,  the kind that came individually wrapped in plastic.

A meal overflowing with sodium and transfat, made of refined, highly processed food and chemicals.

I liked it. It's safe to say it was one of my favorite meals.

Today's grown-up version is a lot better of course, and ...

I'd like to post a quick reminder to everyone that my short story, The Farm, is available on Amazon Kindle. If you're a Prime member, you can check it out for free through the lending program. For all others, it's 99 cents.

We now resume your normal programming. Thank you for your patience.

Character's Corner: Time Travel Journal Entry, Thomas Andrews 24 January 1912

Malcolm Paddick informed me that they are still waiting for parts needed to install the lifts on 401 (editor's note – 401 was Harland & Wolff's production number for Titanic – they seldom called the ships by name). This is cutting the schedule close. I need them to begin lift installation this week. If I remember right, we had the same issue with 400, and that's twice too many times. I'm going to look for another vendor to provide for future ships.

When Malcolm brought this up, I had the...

Ok. I'll Do It. I'll Run for President. « Author Piper Bayard

This is not new news, but it's funny and true all at once. She's still in the running, too. I'll have to do some digging through the 'nets to find more info.

A Cooking Post: Flour Mix

A few years ago, I got curious about Celiac disease, which you probably know is caused by an adverse reaction to gluten. I don't have Celiac disease. I'm just fascinated by food allergies or auto-immune responses to food because, from an evolutionary perspective, a species that becomes incapable of digesting its food is going to die out.

I'm sure that a critical mass of sufferers must be reached before it becomes a problem for the species. I have no idea what that number would be for...
