First Look: new paint colors

Hi all. The excitement continues as Creativation, the trade show for the Craft & Hobby Association, is less than one week away. It is there that the new art and craft products for the season will be revealed.

Today I have a sneak peek of my new set of paints coming from PaperArtsy...

They have been designed to work and mix well with my initial set of paints...

These paints are Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics, with a fast-drying, matte finish. They are perfect for mixed media and journaling, as any and every pen/marker you choose to use will make marks on it - without destroying your pen. The paints in the line vary in opacity and are labeled as opaque, semi-opaque, or translucent.
I love this piece from Nikki Acton, who has demonstrated that by mixing a variety of paints from the first and new sets...you can make rust and patina. And we cannot live without rust and patina!

You can see and read more right now about my new paints on this post on the PaperArtsy blog. And stay tuned...the paints will be available for purchase later this week from my online shop

Dimensional Dimension

The month of January is always exciting to me as I unveil my newest products - the designs I have been sitting on for months, eager to share.
In the next few weeks, I will be showing you all my new collections from Impression Obsession, Spellbinders, PaperArtsy and StencilGirl Products. But for today, this post is a bit of a look back.
Spellbinders recently posted a list of their Top 10 tutorials for 2016. I was thrilled to see that my guest blog post on ways to create dimension and texture with die cuts was included on the list.

ARTifacts: A Collaborative Project for 2017

Artifacts (plural noun): objects made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest.
ARTifacts (plural noun): a collaborative project for 2017 documenting adventures in art.

I am always excited for the start of a new year. Feels like a fresh beginning, an opportunity to do things better, and a chance to begin all those projects that you have been thinking about forever...but have not yet started.

Every year I have so many "art memories" from my travels, my teaching, my adventures in NYC, and my studio work. While I post these on my blog, I have always wanted to create some sort of physical artist book to hold these memories. I have decided that 2017 will be the year of ARTifacts -- a collaborative project for 2017 documenting adventures in art.

I would love to have you join me if this sounds like a project that intrigues you. This would be a no rules collaboration. Just find or make some sort of artist book, planner, scrapbook, 3-ring-binder, folder, or other container to document your creative experiences, whether they be in art, craft, or anything else. Then get to documenting in any way to style that works for you.

Share your pages on your blog and social media sites using #ARTifacts...and with me. Email your images to shap97@gmail.com at any time throughout the year and I will be creating regular posts to share your creation on The Altered Page. If enough people join in, I will host an online exhibition at the end of the year. If you like, leave a comment saying you plan to join in on the fun.

----------------------
I have used the components of my Spellbinders book kit as the basis for my artist book and am excited to begin. I plan to share images of and from my book as I add pages throughout the year.
Watch the video to see the book kit in action and continue in this post to learn more about how my book kit works.

Start with a sturdy, kraft-color, 3-ring binder measuring 7.25 x 9.25 inches. It's waiting to be painted, collaged or decorated in your own personal style.

Add to that a package of inserts, complete with pages measuring 6 x 8.5 inches with and without tabs.

Make yours truly customizable with a contour, steel-rule die set that allows you to cut your own pages from paper, craft metal, corrugated cardboard, chip board, felt, fabric, cork, and more. This magnetic set includes dies that allow you to cut both a window in any part of the page and a single page tab.

Tab lovers can get an extra steel-rule die set that enables you to cut three additional tabs.

You can find these products online in the Spellbinders shop.

As the Sun Sets...

As the sun sets on 2016...

and I reflect on my experiences this past year...

I think about...
my sense that there is always light to be found in the darkness...

how hard it sometimes is to maintain my balance...
the fact that I always have the opportunity to write my own story...
the times when life felt mixed up and tangled...
the many treasures I found in unexpected places...
the losses that continue to hurt all these years later...
those special memories I created through my own choices...
the moments I was running on empty...
my faith in the belief that what goes around comes around
the heights I reached through hard work and determination...
and my continued quest...
Thank you all for continuing to be such a big part of my journey this past year. I look forward to all the adventures we will have together in 2017.
A happy, healthy, and creative new year to each and every one of you!

Top 16 of 2016

Best of...
December is always a time of reflection for me. At the end of the last three years, I have looked back over the previous year's blog posts to see which were the most popular based on hits. This not only lets me work toward creating a better blog but helps me to take the pulse of the art community. If you want to look back, click here to go to my top 13 posts from 2013, here for the top 14 of 2014, and here for the (you guessed it) top 15 of 2015.

For 2016, I am counting down my top 16 blog posts based on hits. The most popular posts are connected to giveaways, artist issues and think pieces, collaborative art postings, product line releases, video tutorials and trend watching,
