7,000,000,000

According to the UN, the world population has reached 7 billion.

Since 1969, the world population has doubled.  Can the ecosystem sustain 7 billion people with the developing world racing to catch-up to American consumption rates?

When you look at things graphically, the trajectory doesn't look particularly sustainable to me. This topic is particularly compelling and disturbing to me. More to come…

Nobel Prize goes to Immunologists

T Lymphocyte

The 2011 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded (3 OCT 11) to: Bruce Beutler, MD, and Jules Hoffmann, PhD (half-share divided) for discovers concerning receptor proteins involved in activation of the body's innate immunity; and to the late Ralph Steinman, MD (half share) for discovers concerning dendritic cells role in activating T cells for adaptive immunity.

Unfortunately, Dr. Steinman of Rockefeller University, died on September 30 after a 4-year battle with pancreatic cancer, only days before the annoucement. Steinman used an immunotherapy that incorporated his research to extend his life four years beyond what is typical for such a diagnosis.

This award is exciting because it is the first time in recent history that immunologists have been recognized by the Noble committee.

In researching Calypso Directive, I spent many long hours learning how the immune system saves our lives everyday from invading pathogens and cancer cells on a continuous basis.

US Treasury Holdings by China

I'm currently researching and writing my second novel, which is going to embroil the Think Tank in a chess match of US - China espionage and counter-espionage. The US and PRC are knotted together economically and politically in a way that, I would argue, is unsettling given our cultural and ideological differences.

Does this make you nervous? It does me…
