New WordPress Theme Design Classes, Based on Underscores

We're delighted to relaunch our WordPress theme design classes.

This week, there's an introductory class called "The Beginners Guide to WordPress Theme Development". Next week, look out for a much longer class that takes you from design to finished theme.

These new classes represent a big shift in the way students learn WordPress theme development.

How to Use the Drupal Group Module

Group is an extremely powerful Drupal 8 module that allows you to create groups of users with shared content and permissions.

It's easy to imagine that this module will replace Organic Groups, and become the default choice for social sites in Drupal 8.

In this tutorial, I'm going to explain how you can use the new Group module to organize your site's users.

Drupal 8 Day Will Be November 19th, 2016

Drupal 8 has been out for nearly one year, and is now maturing into a really powerful platform.

We will hold an online event all about Drupal 8 on November 19th, the first anniversary of Drupal 8's release. This will be the perfect day to celebrate D8.

The event will be called "Drupal 8 Day" and will be an online version of a Drupal Camp.

It will be one complete day of live presentations. To get a good feel for this type of event, check out Wordsesh.org in the WordPress space.

The goal is to present Drupal 8 in the best possible light, especially to people who normally can't attend a Drupal Camp. We talk with a lot of people who just don't live near any kind of DrupalCamp. Some typical examples are people outside the big Canadian cities, people living in Eastern Europe but outside capital cities, and people in sub-Saharan Africa.

The Debate We Need: How Can SaaS and Open Source Work Together?

Back in 2007, there was a lot of controversy over the GPL. Some developers wanted to make money selling GPL-licensed products. However, a lot of angry people insisted it shouldn't be done and that commercialisation was against the spirit of the license. I interviewed a group of those developers to understand their thinking.

Now in 2016, I think we're approaching a similar time of change. More and more developers are going to start using a hybrid SaaS and open source model. Large companies such as Automattic and Acquia are leading the way. but smaller companies will follow.
