The Best Way to Build Custom Meta Boxes in WordPress?

Recently I needed to accomplish a specific chore for my job. I needed to make a meta box in the WordPress admin.
The image below shows an example of a simple meta box. In WordPress, in the admin area, any box that holds a part of the User Interface is called a meta box.

Going to California for DrupalCon Los Angeles

Some cities are world class destinations. London, New York, Barcelona, Sydney, Hong Kong ... you know the names.

DrupalCon isn't always held in a world class city, but in 2015 it will be. The North American DrupalCon is headed to Los Angeles.

DrupalCon Los Angeles runs from May 11 to 15, and you should go to California with us.

DrupalCon Los Angeles is going to be one full week of Drupal with sessions, business events, education and beautiful weather that many of you have missed this winter. Oh, and it's a great excuse to include this song in a blog post:

Updated Video Class: CSS, Part 1

Whether you use a CMS or even static HTML design for your websites, the next most important tool in your tool chest after the CMS itself is CSS.

CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets and is the part of your design that provides the layout, look and feel of your website. When I'm asked in our training what someone should learn next, CSS is always at the top of my list.

New Video Class: GIMP, Part 4

In this final installment of a four part series, Vicki continues exploring the power of GIMP covering selections, filters, cloning and paint tools. If you're looking for a great open source (free) alternative to Photoshop, GIMP is a great choice!

GIMP is the GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It works on many operating systems, in many languages.

Mike Bradshaw from Company Lab in Chattanooga

Welcome to the "New Tech Cities" series at OSTraining.

In this series we're talking about cities that were rundown but are re-inventing themselves, as using technology to do so. We're trying to get to the bottom of the questions, "What does it take to turn around a struggling city?" and "Can technology help?"

Our initial focus is on the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and here are all the articles published so far:

Introduction
Ronna-Renee Jackson from the Chattanooga Technology Council
Alex Lavidge from Variable Inc.
Andrew Rodgers from The Enterprise Center
Travis Truett from Ambition.com
Tia Capps from Company Lab and GIGTANK
Dr. Leslie Jensen-Inman from Center Centre

This week we're talking Mike Bradshaw one of the leading figures behind the Company Lab, one of Chattanooga's most important start-up resources.

Moving from HTML to Joomla: MagLab at Florida State University

Over the last couple of years, the OSTraining team has been working with the team at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (MagLab for short) at Florida State University.

MagLab is a research powerhouse with discoveries in physics, biology, bioengineering, chemistry, geochemistry, biochemistry.

But, MagLab was stuck with an old, slow, HTML website. I talked Kristen Coyne who helped their team build a new Joomla site at nationalmaglab.org.

My Review of WP Rocket - WordPress Caching

Server side site caching has long been a passion of mine. The speed increase for the end user combined with the lowered server resource needs simply make it a no-brainer. You need to be caching your site on the server.

Until last week I’d only worked with free plugins for caching, and been pretty pleased with my favorite, WP Super Cache. Recently however, I’ve been seeing a lot of press about WP Rocket, a plugin that costs $39. It came out about a year ago, we wrote about it back then, and I’ve kept my eye on it to see if it gets any traction. It seems to be growing well, so I did a 3-part video review for OSTraining.
