Announcement #4: Can Tech Turn Around a City?

Note: This blog post is one of 5 announcements we're making to celebrate our 5th birthday.

This 4th announcement is one of the most personal for me.

I came to United States in 2004 and my wife and I moved to Georgia. We lived in the countryside and the closest cities to us were Atlanta and Chattanooga.

In Atlanta, the boom years were in full swing. Real estate prices were sky high and construction cranes were everywhere.

Ronna-Renee Jackson from the Chattanooga Technology Council

Welcome to the first in our series on the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee.

We're talking about Chattanooga because it's a city that was rundown but is in the process of re-inventing itself, partly through technology.

We're trying to get to the bottom of the questions, "What does it take to turn around a struggling city?" and "Can technology help?"

In this first interview, Ronna-Renee Jackson argues that technology is important, but the spirit and energy in a city is even more crucial.

Announcement #3: Simple Renew is Stable and Also a Learning Site

Note: This blog post is one of 5 announcements we're making to celebrate our 5th birthday.

Today we’re delighted to release the first stable version of Simple Renew for Joomla.

Simple Renew, if you didn’t know, is the easiest way to build a Joomla membership site.

Version 1.0 is a major milestone after over a year of hard work by our team. Simple Renew is already a complete package, offering everything you'd need to run a membership site. It is already powering Alledia.com and the websites of several early adopters.

Announcement #2: The OSTraining Book Series

Note: this blog post is one of 5 announcements we're making to celebrate our 5th birthday.

My name is Chiara Aliotta and I'm delighted to be writing about design and branding again on the OSTraining blog. Today, I'm going to talk about how we redesigned the OSTraining book series.

This is not the first time that Until Sunday and OSTraining have collaborated on an interesting design project. You may remember my blog post about their new logo that also explained the design process I followed.

OSTraining Turns 5 With Several Announcements

Five years ago, on February 1st 2010, we launched the membership area here at OSTraining.

When we launched, we had no employees and only 50 videos. We were really, really grateful that many of you took a gamble on us and signed up as members.

With our fifth year anniversary here, we're fortunate to have worked with over 30,000 students; and together with you, we've published 100,000 forum posts, 2,500 videos, and 1,800 blog posts.

New Video Class: Introduction to the Command Line

Before there were Windows or Mac machines on your desktop, there was the command line. If you wanted to look at the directory structure of your computer or see hidden files, you could type a simple command into the terminal window.

With today's GUI interfaces, the command line may not seem as important. But if you want to manage a remote computer like a VPS or a dedicated web server, the command line can be incredibly helpful.

In this class, Brian takes us on a tour of the command line, giving us the basics we need to find our way around. This course is foundational for server management and Git.
