Chapter One

The urge to once again study her reflection in the mirror overwhelmed Jasmine Baruch as she tucked a stray hair behind her ear with a sigh. She resisted, knowing every strand lay in place—artfully disheveled and perfect paired with a skimpy dress and sexy makeup. Too bad her reasons for being in the hotel reeked of desperation rather than passion.

Tomorrow, she'd have to choose a husband from among the many supernatural beings that roamed her land. In a few short hours, she would reach the age of twenty-two, the magical number that demanded that she, as a female jinn, marry and immediately get knocked up in order to carry on her endangered race.

But, she'd worry about that later. Tonight would consist of wild, no strings attached sex. And, she'd damn well enjoy herself. There was no reason to dwell on the fact that it would be the first time for any kind of sex. Ironic as it might be to the human race, being a virgin at a marriage equaled sheer blasphemy in her world.

Where she grew up, females began to procreate the moment they turned sixteen…except for her. She had been different. The normal passions that pushed jinns to lust and desire never came. Not at sixteen, not at seventeen—not even now. Her entire community called her "Ice Jinn," mocking her inability to feel lust or passion. Hell, she'd even noticed other supernatural creatures snickering at her once or twice.

She was a disgrace. A disgrace she wouldn't pass onto her family. And that brought her to tonight, as she sat in the ornate opulence of the Castillo Resort and Hotel, awaiting her weak human prey. Oh, she wouldn't hurt him; the stories about jinn cruelty that swarmed throughout the world were not entirely true. Sure, there were those who followed their less desirable thoughts and embraced their demonic urges. But, she chose the more angelic side of her temperament, thank you very much. Well, minus the fact that she planned to lose her virginity to a stranger.

That part—not so angelic.

He would get to bed her, and she would walk away minus the atrocious maidenhead that marked her as an innocent. And, although she had no idea how to have mind-numbing sex, her beauty remained undeniable. Jinns were dazzling creatures—whether they were good or evil. Her bedmate would not be disappointed. At least, not until she failed to please him between the sheets.

But, her disgraceful dilemma would be solved, and she'd free to choose a husband without shame.

Yay.

She didn't mind getting married. It's just that she had yet to find someone who made her want to. No one had made her horny, or her heart race. She'd never felt she'd die of longing. The idea of living the rest of her life in an unfeeling bubble downright depressed her.

If only she could find a supernatural man—any breed would work. Jinns didn't necessarily have to marry their own kind. Really, anything but a demon would do. Full-blooded demons were the jinns' mortal enemies and even half-blooded demons, while not entirely evil, were far from a safe bet. The majority were so evil that when their world collided with the more benign jinns' it usually ended in a fight to the death.

A slight number of demi-sanguines were not all bad, but they were few and far between. The idea of mating with one? Ludicrous.

And wanting to kill the man who finally stirred her lust?

Now, that would suck.

The likelihood of finding a mate of any kind before the deadline seemed less than promising, so worrying wouldn't change a damn thing. Tomorrow, she'd take a deep breath, close her eyes, and point to a man in the crowd.

Who the heck cared who she picked as long as she fulfilled her duty?

Her fragile human apparently had a hard time keeping track of time. Madame Eve's email instructed her to be at the hotel in San Diego by nine o'clock, and it was nine fifteen. Seriously? Can't he be on time? At once, the hair stood up on the back of her neck, and she froze. Her every instinct screamed of danger, telling her a demon lingered dangerously close.

She rose from the stool at the vanity, and grasped her gold dagger. The ruby in the hilt shone dimly as it always did in the presence of a demonic spirit, confirming her suspicions. Clutching the weapon in her right hand, she crept to the door with an angry snarl.

How does a demon know where I am?

She'd gone to every extreme to make herself untraceable. Not only would being found in a compromising position endanger her, but if she survived, it would also make her a laughingstock. God, if they discovered she'd paid someone to find a man willing to have sex with the Ice Jinn, the ridicule would never cease.

Shit.

She grabbed the knob and flung the door open, rushing through it with her knife arm held ready. She'd taken one step outside when strong arms gripped her from behind and covered her mouth, effectively cutting off her ability to scream or breathe. She cursed, squirming to escape her captor's grasp, fighting his powerful hold. Though he seemed to be as unbreakable as iron chains, the skin brushing against hers as she fought to free herself felt human.

Whatever demon she'd sensed before seemed a smaller threat to her safety than the mere human who had managed to seize her, and so tightly.

With an angry growl, she closed her eyes and focused on her other strengths. The heat of a full force fire flowed out of her, causing the man holding her to release her with a yell. The acrid stench of scorched skin met her nose, and she scrunched it in distaste. One never got used to that smell.

Wasn't it ironic that the Ice Jinn fought with fire?

"What the fuck just happened?" the man behind her exclaimed.

With a sigh, she spun on her heel, knife arm held out in front of her, at chest height. She squatted, ready to pounce on the intruder if she must, but instead froze. Her curt reply jammed in her throat, choking her.

Holy shit.

Gavin studied the gorgeous creature breathing heavily with fury and raised an eyebrow. In his experience, when something out of the ordinary happened it meant one thing—a supernatural creature caused it. Not that he particularly minded if she were other than human; he didn't fall into the normal category, either. He had come to this rendezvous intending to have a carefree one-night stand—what the company arranged, after all. Unfortunately, things were appearing more complex than he cared to admit.

What was she? Every instinct told him he wouldn't like the answer.

But, her body had felt delectable against his, and as long as she didn't pull any more fire tricks, he wanted to feel it again…and soon. With that thought, he put his hands up in the age old defensive gesture and said in a soft, soothing tone, "Miss, can you please explain why you came running out of there like hell chased at your heels, and then tell me what the devil you are?"

His voice seemed to pull her out of deep thought, and she stiffened. Her aggressive stance made her breasts jut seductively, and his mouth watered at the sight. The glare on her face, however, proposed sex did not rest at the top of her mind at the moment.

Pity, that.

Especially considering he had come here for exactly that. Most days, finding a willing woman came easily to him. Too easily. The problem rested in the fact they were never searching for a one-night stand. They always pressured him for more. He liked things easy—fun. He'd practically leapt with joy when he'd been told about Madame's dating service. Yet now, he'd be forced to bet the odds of his getting laid were very slim, indeed.

"I'd rather know why you are here," she said with a stubborn tilt of her chin. "Who are you?"

"I'm Gavin Werboto, a client of 1Night Stand, sent here by Madam Eve. You?"

"You?" she shrieked with a bubble of hysterical laughter. "You were sent to me? A demi-sanguine? A half demon—half human monster? What kind of sick joke is this?"

He stiffened. "How the fuck do you know what I am? Wait, you're a freaking ji—"

"I know what you are because I am a jinn, and my job is to hunt down pests like you," she interrupted with a proud toss of her curls. "And why Madame Eve would think us well suited is beyond me."

He sucked in a deep breath, and staggered back. "You're a jinn?Why did you apply with a one-night stand service? A freaking jinn? Priceless. Are you going to try to kill me now?" he asked in an unconcerned manner as he inspected his nails.

She snarled at him, "Hell, yes, I am. And why are you, a half-blooded demon, here? Surely, you can get laid without assistance. Or do you have, uh, issues down there? Aww, you poor thing." She gave a sympathetic shake of her head.

He stalked toward her with a growl, and she took a hasty step backward before halting. He grabbed her by the arms and shook her. "Who are you? Why are you here?" He pressed his hips to hers to show her he didn't have any issues down there. Her indrawn breath and widened eyes showed that she noticed his erect condition.

She broke free of his hold and backed away. At a safe distance, she tossed back her hair and replied, "Jasmine Baruch."

He inhaled through his teeth with a whistling sound and studied her, before bursting out with laughter. "You are the Ice Jinn? The jinn incapable of feeling anything for another?"

Fury overtook her features, and before he could lift a hand to fight, she stalked toward him and punched him in the nose. With a curse, he stumbled back. She broke my freaking nose.

"Don't call me that." She stomped toward the bedroom. "And get out of my room." She entered and slammed the door behind her, leaving him to stare in astonishment.

He probably should have turned around and left, but something about her made him want to stay. He wanted to feel her writhe beneath him, maybe make her smile. He longed to crack her icy shell—and find the molten fire he discerned rested within.

A woman that passionate out of bed had to be a force to be reckoned with in it. He had to discover a way to convince her he'd make it worth her time. Because he could tell, without a doubt, that she was worth his.

My first Slush MS

So, I've only read one slush manuscript so far, but I've already learned so much! I'm loving being on the other side of the spectrum, so to speak. Reading a manuscript with the express intention of deciding if it is salable or not is utterly refreshing.

I see the things that i do in my stories that don't add up in theirs. I can look at a heroine and hero objectively, and decide whether or not I like them.

It's utterly refreshing, and I'm hoping that I can take these experiences, and my own thoughts on each and every manuscript, away as food for my own books.

Tonight, I'm moving on to another one. I'm hoping I fall in love with it. Hoping I get to recommend it for publishing. The last one had too many issues, so I had to give it a no. Sad, but it's the way it works. I hope the author can hone her craft, and have better luck next time.
