Preternatura Book Club Finishes DEAD WITCH WALKING

Welcome to this week's "meeting" of the Preternatura Book Club! Today, we're finishing up Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking, the first in her Hollows series featuring witch Rachel Morgan.
Next Wednesday, we'll tackle the first two chapters of Halfway to the Grave, the first of Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series—chosen by popular vote. This is a new series for me (you guys have been raving about Cat and Bones so long I can't wait to dig in)—hope you'll join in the read!
Here's how it...

Cover Debut! Royal Street Cover Reveal & Contest

Yep, that nebulous book I've been teasing at for a long time is a big step closer to reality. Royal Street has a cover!

The artist for the cover is Cliff Nielsen, and I couldn't be more thrilled. He has done some great covers recently, including the Cassandra Clare Mortal Instruments series, the latest Chronicles of Narnia editions, and titles for authors such as Lisa DesRochers, Sara Beth Durst, and Devon Monk.

So...what do you think? Leave a comment, and you'll be entered for a drawing of a s...

New Releases Aug. 22-28 & Reader's Choice Contest

I'd thought this was going to be a huge release week—but it's next week that's a monster (and the week after that—holy cow!). We have another reasonable week of new releases, with a couple of highly anticipated titles in YA (Jackson Pearce's second Sisters Red outing) and paranormal romance (not one, but two by Gena Showalter, and a new series start for Rachel Vincent). What do YOU want to read? As always, a Reader's Choice giveaway—and it's international. Get to reading!

Review & Contest: THE MAP OF TIME by Felix J. Palma

Every once in a while a book comes out of my TBR pile that almost defies description, and The Map of Time is one. To call it a time-travel mystery would be a disservice. It's sort of like a mad scientist met an dotty old English professor on the way to pick up a hooker. Errr.....yeah. That's it. Are you brave enough? Big enough? Bad enough? Read on and win your own mind-blowing copy of this first U.S. release from popular Spanish author Palma, a book author Cherie Priest called "pure...

Urban Fantasy Review & Contest: HARD SPELL by Justin Gustainis

I have a new urban fantasy series to add to my list of favorites—how fun is that? Today, I'm looking at the first in a new series from Angry Robot Books and author Justin Gustainis. Welcome to the Occult Crimes Unit Investigation series...and read on to win a copy of Hard Spell.
THE OFFICIAL BLURB: Stan Markowski is a Detective Sergeant on the Scranton PD's Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit. Like the rest of America, Scranton's got an uneasy 'live and let unlive' relationship with the...

Worldbuilding with Kathryne Kennedy & Win THE LADY OF THE STORM

A quick bit of news: Make sure you stop by the blog next Tuesday for my—gasp—cover debut. Yep, I'll be rolling out the cover for Royal Street, and I can't wait for you to see it—woot!
Today, though, I'd like to welcome a terrific author, Kathryne Kennedy, whose new fantasy romance, The Lady of the Storm, was released August 1 by Sourcebooks Casablanca. Think masterful worldbuilding and Elven Lords. Sigh. I'm always fascinated by how authors build their worlds and the creatures who populate...

Preternatura Book Club: DEAD WITCH WALKING, Chapters 31-32

Welcome to this week's "meeting" of the Preternatura Book Club! We're reading Kim Harrison's Dead Witch Walking, the first in her Hollows series featuring witch Rachel Morgan.
Here's how it works. Each week, I'll post a summary (spoiler alert!) on two chapters, and we'll chat about them. Try to minimize spoilers beyond what's happened in the book we've read so far. You can read along, read ahead, or just stop by and read the summaries. After the Book Club has been up a few days, I'll move...
