Saturday Sinema #49 - Seven Blood-Stained Orchids

Inspired by the works of Edgar Wallace, this groovy little giallo finds barfhound auteur Umberto Lenzi in a particularly nasty mood. Seems somebody's been offing prostitutes and other ladies around town. When Antonio Sabato's wife almost gets the kabosh, he decides to play Sherlock and solve the crimes. There's some business involving little half-moon pendants and shit like that, but don't worry if you can't follow any of this, I mean hell, this is a giallo after all. And you all know what that means; none of this shit matters. Marisa Mell also shows up briefly, which makes everything right in the world. Just find the groove and go with it....

Saturday Sinema #48 - Beyond The Door

Everyone's favorite nanny, Juliet Mills, gets possessed and knocked up by Satan. Since she's due to have the devil's baby, she does what any broad with a bun in the oven does, namely curse a lot, spin her head around, and barf pea soup all over the damned place. She even out-cusses her funky little ginger of a son. Needless to say, bad shit goes down chez Mills. Richard Johnson also shows up and wanders around for a bit. The Italians were amazingly prolific when it came to making rip-offs in the '70s and '80s, and this is one of the best. Hallelujah.

Saturday Sinema #47 - Hatchet For The Honeymoon

John's got a bit of a problem. Sure, he may run a fashion salon filled with beautiful models, but the downer is he's married to a total witch...and then there's the fact that he's a psychopath. Seems he has a fetish for wacking brides with a cleaver and running around in a bridal veil. He's got some serious "mommy issues" going on here. Mario Bava made this one in 1970, fresh off his success with Diabolik. Bava had a talent for making colorful, fun movies for next to nothing. The proof of his genius is that he's often imitated by filmmakers with budgets twenty times the size he had to work with, and Bava's films are always so much better. Without this film, there would be no American Psycho. So turn off the lights, put your feet up, and dig it.

Saturday Sinema #46 - Amer

Hey guys. Listen, don't even try to understand what the fuck is going on here. Just know that the main character, Ana, has been barking at the moon from day one. I mean this chick is fucked up. She's a strange combination of temptress and psycho; kind of like most gals I know. Humbert Humbert would have loved this one. Gorgeous cinematography and a kick ass score accentuate this fine tribute to the giallo films of the '70s. Just dig on the visuals and let them flow - meaning will come later. More movies should be like this. Fuck Hollywood.

Saturday Sinema #45 - The Virgin of Nuremberg

Mary just married some rich German dude and moved into the ancestral family pad. She's not digging life in the castle. When she isn't hearing screams in the night, she's wandering through the halls in her nightie. I guess it would be hard to relax in a place that has its own iron maiden...and then there's creepy Christopher Lee prowling around dressed like John Cale. If you ask me, what Mary really needs is a good, purposeful, thorough violation and chastisement. Antonio Margheriti made a series of great Gothics during the mid-sixties. He was one of a handful of directors who defined the Italian horror film during its golden age in the fifties and sixties. This, The Virgin of Nuremberg, is one of his rare color Gothics. It's seriously fucking rad and the only thing that could have improved it would be the presence of Barbara Steele. And cheerleaders.

Saturday Sinema #44 - Rabid

Legendary 70s cock-gobbling porno superstar Marilyn Chambers stars in this, David Cronenberg's second major flick, as Rose, a motorcycle crash victim who winds up at some fucked up clinic where the doctors are itching to try out some experimental shit on a patient. Soon after her treatment she develops a taste for blood, which she siphons from her victims via a small doggie dick type thing in one of her armpits. Yowza! Pretty soon she's got half of Quebec infected and a no bag limit on Canucks is established. Good times!

Saturday Sinema #43 - Zombie Lake

Oh. My. God. What can I say about this legendary chunkblower from continental sleaze merchants Eurocine? This one easily falls into the so-bad-it's-good category, kicking the celluloid shit out of films like Plan 9 From Outer Space or any other cinematic clusterfuck one can imagine. Originally intended to be a project for Jess Franco, the film went to Jean Rollin when Franco failed to show up for the first day of shooting. It seems Rollin took a cue from good ole Jess and realized this one was going to be a floater. He's credited here as J.A. Laser and I can't say I blame him. Normally Rollin is pretty good, but in this case he obviously didn't care - the acting is atrocious, the zombies feature bright green face paint that ends at the neck line, and the whole thing just reeks of ennui. However, this film does feature lotsa bush and one of the greatest opening credit sequences in the history of cinema. This flick needs to be seen to be believed. I absolutely fucking love it. Keep the scotch handy - you're going to need it.

Saturday Sinema #42 - Footprints

So Florinda Bolkan keeps having recurring dreams about astronauts on the moon. Couple that with the fact that she can't remember anything about the last three days and you know what you've got? One fucked-in-the-head broad, that's what. In an effort to regain her memory she visits a seaside town populated by pretty much no one except for an uptight family, some dude who's trying to get into her pants, and a turban-wearing lady with a box of chocolates. This flick also features Euro-horror's favorite little red-headed barf hound Nicoletta Elmi. Oh yeah, if you blink you'll miss Klaus Kinski earning his paycheck. What the fuck is going on? Stick around and follow along with Florinda to find out. Dig it.

Saturday Sinema #41 - More

Mimsy's back, and she's more fucked up than ever! In this week's flick she goes to a party and meets up with some German dude who's hitchhiking to Paris because he wants to see the world, dontcha know. His pals warn him to stay away from her, but seriously people, what guy is gonna stay away from a freaky chick who invites him to Ibiza? I mean really, we all know the fucked up ones are the freakiest, you dig? So anyway, they go and cavort around on the beach and shoot some smack every now and then. Listen, if you're set on being a junkie you might as well do it with a gal like Mimsy. Anyway, this film has a lot going for it; we got strange Germans, a little breaking and entering, Mimsy in various states of undress, and a score by Pink Floyd. So come on everybody, tie off, tap a vein, and kick back - the first one's free...
