Habba Alert: Black Henna Fingertips

Last year it was the Henna glove (post), this year it seems to be the Henna fingertips in blackest of black.

I’ve seen several pictures online and on instagram of stylish girls sporting the black henna fingertips in black. Some keep the fingers black, others paint the nails some crazy vibrant color that will shine against the blackness of the finger tips. I couldn’t use any of those pictures since they are the people’s own y3ni so I drew my own version :p Excuse my artistic talents but I guess the idea is clear.

What do you think? Myself? Well, ever since I was a child I’ve loathed henna. I hated the smell, the way they made pouches out of your hands covered in fabric, the tint of orange, the mess. I might have been the only little girl in the 80′s who ran a mile away whenever I saw or smelt a whiff of henna. Never a fan, never will be.

As a child one of my aunts told me, in order to get me to put henna on, that heaven smelled like henna and I started screaming hysterically that I didn’t want to go to heaven. I didn’t calm down until I was told I had the option to not smell henna in heaven. God only knows how true that is.

Anyhow back to the moment. I have to say I liked the henna glove better. Black fingertips look like something had caught on fire and was burned badly. Its kinda scary unless you are going with a goth look which, for the love of god, don’t since only 0.5% of Kuwaiti girls can pull that off. I wonder how it would look on an bright orange tan though?

What do you think? Would you go for the black henna fingertips habba?

The Adoptive Kuwaiti Couple who Make Me Proud

I was browsing Instagram yesterday when I saw a comment by New Q8 Bride on one of the pictures regarding her sister. Minutes later and I realized not only her sister is the spitting image of her –twin likes, really- but she is young, married, and has a small little boy Hamoodi who is adopted.

Yes you read that last word right, adopted. I had to do a double take at the pictures on Instagram and her blog. If she didn’t use the word “adopted” I wouldn’t have though for one second that the boy wasn’t their own biological son. I saw the huge birthday party they had for him in her father’s house, the gifts, the way the boy is hugged with all the love in the world, not only by the couple but also by her father. I was so touched that a child in Kuwait can find a family to welcome him and give him a life he deserves with adoption.

That baby is so lucky to have found you, Um Hamoodi & Bu Hamoodi. This is not brave, this is beyond brave! She is the first person in Kuwait that I know of who had adopted a child to be frank, shameful to say the least given that Islam doesn’t ban adoption, on the contrary. What is banned in Islam is giving the adopted child your last name but not the actual adoption.

To be quite frank I don’t think the families in Kuwait have the emotional sophisticating needed to love a child who is not their own. People are barely tolerant of their own children, throwing them for nannies to raise or letting them scurry off as they please just so the responsibility of raising them doesn’t become a burden. Or if there are multiple siblings they don’t divide the love and attention fairly among them. Of course this can be found all over the world not only in Kuwait per say but again I think times are really changing indeed.

By the time I asked for the girl’s blog address I had tears streaming from my eyes. There is even a youtube video which made me wail. I would understand a woman wanting to adopt a baby given the maternal instincts some women have can become unbearable but for a young man to go along with it and actually want it? For them both to face society with the baby and have to answer to their looks, disdain, prejudice, and sheer leqafa? It’s the bravest thing a young Kuwaiti couple has done so far.

Um & Bu Hamoodie, you and your families have my full respect. You showed me that even though we feel like the world around us is falling apart, there is still hope with people like you who actually make a difference. May Allah bless you o Allah ybal’3kom ib Hamoodie me3res insha2 Allah :)

You can know more about her adoption journey on her blog (link).

Picture of the Week: Kiwi

Though its a “negative calorie” food that aids in weight loss. Though it has a gorgeous green hue that I adore. Though people like it and eat it with a spoon or drink its juice. I cannot stand it.

The taste, and seeds, of the Kiwi scratch at my throat in the exact same way the Kiwi skin scratches against my hand. I love most fruit kinds but I have a really hateful relationship with Kiwi. Its best fruit partner, the pineapple, is my friend though.

Do you like Kiwi? Or does it scratch at your throat as well?

Your Advertising Questions Answered After One Year of Advertising

Exactly one year ago I posted a question to help me decide whether to go down the road of placing advertisements on my blog or not (post). Eventually I did and now, one year on, most of my questions are answered so I thought I’d share what I’ve experienced through this year.

My questions were:

Will blog readers view me differently when i start to put ads up?

Sadly, they did. Some though I’d sold out to those advertisements, other though that just because I had an ad of a “rival” business’ it meant I am the enemy too and decided to punish me for it. Others simply hated the mere idea of my being paid extra money just out of jealousy and nothing to do with integrity. I’d heard a lot of people who went “oooooh she has moneeeeeyyyyyyyyy now she earns a lot per month” a3otho be Allah. Mo tadroon ana kint a6or 3nd bab elmasyed before I began advertising. Moving on…

Will they think that i am a greedy writer who blogs for the money only?

Uh huh. Every word I utter is condemned. It seems that my opinion has now been clogged with money only. I’ve sold out my soul to the devil, bye bye. Unless they have a blog or a website with ads, people do not understand that you won’t be obliged to write anything or even mention those who advertise on your blog. Sometimes you even forget them totally or the ads changes automatically in a way that the get placed and moved when you don’t even notice them.

I also believe people should have an opinion of their on and not run blindly behind blogs and whatever they say. I never trust anyone’s taste in fashion, movies, food, or travel destinations. I only trust things I’ve tried myself. A bloggers role is just to show you what they’ve experienced, your role is to decide for yourself whether or not you want to try it and if you do whether you like it or not. This is called your own opinion, feel it, embrace it, and relish on it. Don’t like it? Elnass athwaq. Don’t blame the blogger for the time and money you’ve waste it.

Would I be force to provide blog content even when I don’t feel lf like it? Just to keep the site going? What if I run out of ideas?

Only one company requested that I must post a minimum of three posts per week. The rest of the companies didn’t make such demands. Yes, sometimes I didn’t feel like posting. I felt like hiding under the covers or running away from everyone. I have bad days when I cannot even get out of bed, let alone blog, but I was saved by the posts I had scheduled before. You do have the choice to say yes or no to such rules of course.

Is that extra 50 KD per month worth it?

Worth it in what terms? I’m not sure. Lets talk money here since its the factor that most ad disapprovers itch about.

First, my rates were “very low” in comparison to fellow bloggers, including new blog comers. I’ve been told several times by people in the industry to raise them. I don’t think I deserve to raise them.

Second, that extra 50 KD per month you say? Do you know that more than one advertisement agency who placed ads on my blog did not pay me. Yes, you read that right. Not everyone paid me when money was due and if you know me well you’d know that not in a million years would I email you asking for my money. I don’t think they did it out of exploitation, I suppose they were too busy with life and simply forgot. So the next time I do any ads I would ask for my payment in advance. I’ve learned my lesson.

What about those who paid me? Well, nothing at all changed about my spending and life style. I still don’t own a Berkin, didn’t buy a diamond studded Rolex watch or a Sea side villa in Spain. I still live in a rented apartment with no hope of getting a place of my own soon. I am however eyeing a red ferarri and hoping that next year’s ad proceeds would pay for it since the pay is so good!

Now I’ll answer two extra questions I’ve been asked by other people during the past year.

What annoyed you most about ads?

The fact that I had to manually swap ads so often at the last minute for different campaigns. Most ad agencies either provide a static image, a flash video, or a script where they change the ads on their own terms from their own side and you don’t have to do a thing. I have a day job, I have a husband, I have a house to run, I’m my own blog designer, I’m not always free in the nick of time to change the ads in every single page on my blog especially when its a Thursday afternoon.

So if you want to place ads and you are the ones doing it manually, I advise you to go with companies that would either provide a one time ad or one with a script that changes automatically from their side.

How do you get businesses to advertise on your blog?
Business are supposed to contact you for ads to place on your blog, you shouldn’t be running after ads yourself. Many advertising agencies will you recognize you as a blogger and would want to place ads with you. However, many blogs get ads just because his cousin owns that businesses, and his aunt knows the owner of that company, o ohom awla min el’3areeb like we say in Kuwait. That explains the phenomenon of blogs springing up with ads already on their blogs before they have written one word of blogging, this is Kuwait after all. Is this good or bad? Neither actually, its the way things are, take it or leave it.

I’m reminded of one funny story, a guy in some ad agency kept emailing me press releases of store opening. He actually wrote “Store XYZ opening press release, please publish it in your blog ASAP”. I emailed him back politely noting that I am a blog, not a newspaper, and to please stop emailing me “press releases”. His reply “Its a good way to get advertising from the store”. Its a sad day when an advertising agency doesn’t know the difference between a newspaper and a blog in this day and age, plus insinuating that my reward for placing those press releases of stores opening new branches would be eventually an ad on my blog.

I’d also like to mention another thing here. I got many emails from individuals saying they have got a home business and they’d like to place an ad in my blog, what are your rates? I fell for it once. Afterwards I realized some people lie and send these emails just because they want to know how much you presumably make in one month and gawk about it in their next zwara. Mo 3aib?

I now have the right mind to demand the name of that business and Google it to know if it exists or if this person is actually the owner. Unless you are sure they are the business owner or you know them socially I’d advice against emailing them right away. Most likely businesses doing good would be hiring PR agencies to handle their ads and the contacting on their behalf.

So don’t rush. Take your time, ask, check, double check, read the ad rules, make sure they pay you and they won’t forget, place those ads, egraw elmo3awethat, and buy that flat in Park Lane with the Hyde Park view you’ve always wanted :p Happy Advertising.

Event: Alwan Art & Fashion Exclusive Sneak Peek

Another “colorful” event yesterday, another exclusive sneak peak for bloggers to roam and click away with comfort, and that was the Alwan at Dar Al Funoon.

Fashionable pieces held at an art gallery is enough to make your head spin as your eyes dart from one colorful corner to the other. No wonder it is called Alwan!

The good thing about this post is that I won’t be doing much talking for the colors and the pictures will speak for themselves. First lets start with Qumar 14 designed by Ms. Sara Al-Ateeqi. I am already a customer and love their bishts. I practically live in my own bisht now (post).

You can create your own dara3a by the way to look like the one above.

The charity section where all sale proceeds are donated to charity.

Those are also designed by Qumar 14, I forgot their name but they are like big wraps/scarves.

Colorful tassles on yummy clutches, bracelets, and necklaces.

Next to Qumar 14, who by the way is having summer bishts and I’ve got my eyes on a green one I’m going back for, next to them comes a jewelry designer from Saudi Arabia with the cutest mouthwatering display of jewelry ever.

The name is Auras Everyday Jewelry and there is one big problem in her display, it makes you look at the food and want to steal some for yourself! Ana bema ini ma aste7e 3la wayhi I almost ate one of her macaroons and I don’t even like macaroons!

The butterfly is so cute :)

Next stop: Goji Boutique!

The problem with Goji is that everything you see you want to buy!!!

The beautiful necklace is showcased here by Goji’s owner Ms. Hawazen Al-Buaijan.

Fyunka makes an appearance again for the second time in the same day masha2 Allah :)

Notice the art pieces on the wall? Its because Dar Al Funoon are hosting a contemporary Iranian art at the same time which contributed to the expo too.

Dana Nafisi Jewelry.

Ricamo, artistic pieces for the home that are amazing!

Ricamo if I am not mistaken is located in Salhiya Complex. Gorgeous collection on display indeed!

At the courtyard of Dar AlFunoon you will see Munch and 10.0h.8 catering to the visitors.

It was a lovely place to be, at Alwan’s expo! I truly enjoyed my time! Thank you Hawazen and Sara for accommodating me, I am coming back soon for some shopping ;)

Alwan’s expo is held in Dar Alfunoon, house #28 at Behbehani houses, behind the church, from Sunday April 29 until Tuesday May 1.

Event: Pretty Little Things Exclusive Bloggers Preview

At 7 PM yesterday Pretty Little Things opened its doors for the second time at Bait Al-Sadu for people seeking distinguished and stylish purchases. However, we were allowed to visit at 4 PM to roam the place and take pictures without battling the crowds or trying to take pictures with no people in them or something. Something we really appreciated from Noaf Hussein, the girl behind PLT.

First things first, the PLT venue, Sadu House, was breathtaking! Old, traditional, well modernized, and filled with little alleys with a surprise at every corner! How on earth did I miss this place? I must go back one day for their famous Chay Al-Dha7a! If I find anyone whose willing to go with me that is. If not I’ll take a book and go!

Just to give you an idea regarding the participants.

I arrived very early, I might have been the 2nd blogger there – I was told confashions had already passed by, 7safa I missed u girl- therefore many of the exhibitors were still putting the final touches on their stuff so I didn’t know what this tree was for 7safa :(

You see PLT is not an ordinary expo. They have a cause in mind and that is to renovate the local orphanage. Surprised we have an orphanage in Kuwait? Yes we do. Therefore PLT with the collaboration with Abyat are trying to help out. Some items will be donated by Abyat, some items are placed on a wish list where people can pledge for, and the rest is contributed via a charity art installation in the event to raise funds. I think that tree which I saw adjourned with ribbons in fellow bloggers posts is the art installation and stupid me missed the whole point.

I’m planning to go back to the expo anyways to grab some more things so I will make sure I check out the tree. The first -and my most favorite- booth was Thhaba Jewelry which had something special for me.

OK well, two special things for me. One was a golden envelope for each attending blogger. What’s inside?

A 10% exclusive discount, which I’ve immediately invested in my second special thing that is one-of-a-kind. Well two of a kind since only two were made and mine is the second one. This pretty little elegant glittery thing.

My relationship with jewelry is very scarce. Rarely do I lust over a piece of jewelry but when I do it must be very unique and very elegant. When I saw my bracelet I had that longing feeling women have all year round I suppose, galbi fazz mithil maygoloon. Hence why I had eyes only for my white gold and diamond bracelet

Thhaba? Girl I adore my bracelet! Thank you :* Thank you Swera for taking this shot for me :D What else does Thhaba have in store?

The new collection with flat diamonds!

Next stop: my second favorite booth of the place.

Pieces by Farah! So artistic, so pretty, so creative, simply yummy!

The moment I was there I made an order for a few things and I cannot wait for them to arrive

Those side tables are so pretty! I wonder how many side tables can a person have in his living room? I already have three but maybe we need more? You choose the design, the color, an order them on the spot! So lovely!

And this steel koosha lamp? Ayanin! If I didn’t already have enough new lamps at home I would have snatched it up! Now how soon can a person redecorate?

Finally tearing my self -and my wallet- aside from Pieces by Fara7, I went to her left side neighbour, Paper Designs.

Little pretty things like greeting cards, notebooks, travel bags, and accessories.

By the time I went over to May’s Jewelry it was too late. Her table was already too crowded and I couldn’t get a chance to view it properly. Some unique and very interesting pieces on display. Na3meen as we say in Kuwaiti. I will check her out again on my next visit insha2 Allah.

Next comes The Yard’s section. Its so pretty and colorful you wouldn’t know where to look exactly!

How cute are those teeny little red velvet thingies? I wanted to steal one and eat it when no one was watching :p

Baby B were also there. If you have a baby in the family or you are looking for a baby shower gift, then this is the place to be.

While I was snapping away I was stopped by a pretty lady with a tray of chocolate shots.

The lady was the owner of Solo Churros and they had a fun draw thing going on. Drink the chocolate shot and if you find the bean inside you will win.

I drank, I didn’t win of course given that I am a class A gobisa.

Had I been lucky I would have won this golden necklace from AnaKatarina Jewerly booth.

Ana Katarina jewelry designs and redesigns. I didn’t have a good look as again it was a bit busy but I am planning to go back again.

Saudi designer Razan Alazzouni was participating too and had interesting pieces to show.

Next came Muneera Al-Sharhan’s Jewelry. What caught my attention is that they had a bunch of hammers  on display.

Why the hammers? Because Muneera uses them to make each and every single piece of jewelry she has on display herself! Very neat masha2 Allah! I loved those earrings A LOT and now that I am looking at them I’m wondering to myself why didn’t I buy them? I’m going back for them!

Next there was the famous Baba Ab’3a Berkin bags from Fyunka.

This makeup bag etshaweg! Thank you New Q8 Bride for showcasing it for me :)

Camellia perfumes from Riyadh with their candles, perfumes, and ma3mool.

Lina’s Jewelry designs had some unique wiry pieces that are eye catching.

I loved the Press Designs section. They collaborate with a local printer in Kuwait where they take the discarded but perfectly fine used paper and use it to design paper stuff so the paper doesn’t go to waste. Check out the lovely post cards!

Last but not least I saw these lovely colorful chairs stacked on top of each other. I don’t know by who though. I would love to have them in my garden had my husband not got an allergy towards any funky chairs :’(

The local magazines had an appearance too. Saraab, the magazine where I had my first interview (post), and Khaleejesque.

It was then time to leave and as I did so PLT gave me a little personalized goody bag. Loved the gesture :)

As you go out of Bait Al Sadu you will find a beautiful dining setting provided by Milk  & Munch!

I had promised Noaf that I would come back just to have a good chat while sitting outside in the dining area munching on the acquire food goods :) Thank you dear Noaf and PLTQ8 for the sneak preview and the goody bag! Good job and will come back again!

PLTQ8 are on in Bait Al Sadu, Gulf Road, from Saturday 28 April till Tuesday 1 May  opening from 3 PM till 10:30 PM. For more information you can check their facebook page (link) or follow them on Twitter (@PLTQ8).

The First Anniversary of Dathra’s Book Release

One year ago, I had announced on my blog that Dathra has now become a published book (post).

Time flies so fast! Ever since that announcement I’ve had so much feedback its overwhelming. Many were happy it was finally a book. 99.9% hated the book cover. I had an amazing book signing night, flower bouquets, chocolates and gifts, went on sale in Dubai and became Kinokuniya’s 2nd best seller, went on sale in Amazon, and changed my life forever.

I still cannot believe I have an actual book. It is so weird, like looking through a bubble to the outside world. Of course it wasn’t all roses and cream. Got scathing reviews, people who hated it, people who hated its mistakes, people who hated the use of my nickname Danderma on it. People who hated me having a book in the first place.

On this occasion I am glad to announce that book 2 is not very far behind. Not at all. Expect an announcement that its out starting mid May. Book cover is being done by a well known and much loved local Kuwaiti talent who is also a Dathra fan -care to take a guess?-. Book editing and proofreading is being handled by a professional friend with a degree.

Its just a matter of time really before you have the 2nd book in your hand and its going to ROCK! If you haven’t read the first book I suggest you go and read it now in preparation for the 2nd. My dream for this book is to be stocked at my favorite bookstore of all times, Waterstones UK. You never know it might actually come true.

On Dathra’s book’s birthday I just want to thank you, every single one of you, especially the ones who hated the book and weren’t afraid to say so. For everyone who asked when the 2nd book is coming out, it made me want to finish the 2nd book just for you.

If you are a fan of the book you have my friend Lama to thank for she was the one who sat me down and practically forced me to create the book, love you lamooya :* And finally for Um Mit3ib and Jacquies, Dathra’s two biggest fans, a special thank you, your enthusiasm is what’s going to make book two happen insah2 Allah :*

Happy Birthday Dathoora’s book, kil 3am o entaw bkhair :D

April’s Top 100 Kuwaiti Blogs According to Alexa

The list is back again for April 2012! Many new blogs to check but not many made a big impression, some did though. And the top ten is quite solid, only a minor change. However we at least have a female blogger in the top 5 bloggers of Kuwait :)

Disclaimers again. For the love of god read them!

Disclaimer One The blogs that made it to the list are blogs about Kuwait whether originating from Kuwait or not or whether they are by Kuwaiti nationals or expats living in Kuwait. That’s why I said KUWAITI blog.

Disclaimer Two I still believe the Alexa rank is way overrated, easily manipulated, and highly volatile. It is not a real measure of how a blog is popular but it doesn’t hurt to check it every once in a while as some sort of measure. Its the only semi-reliable measure I can think of. No fighting please.

Disclaimer Three DO NOT ASK ME how to calculate the Alexa rating. For the love of god go to Alexa.com and enter your blog URL. If no local rating is there then THAT’s IT!

Disclaimer Four If you know of a blog I missed or a new blog that is gliding up the top in rocket speed please let me know :)

Disclaimer Five I am Danderma, not Alexa! I do not have the power to rate you or give you a number. Therefore trying to be nice to me will mean nothing. Please remember that.

Now the ratings, enjoy and since it Thursday, celebrate :D

A Lovely Picnic in a Garden

Yesterday I got a call that the girls were going to gather for a quick picnic in a nearby garden. Frankly speaking I don’t think I’ve ever been to a garden in Kuwait before, not if you count the Aquarium’s walkway as one. So I was so excited and the weather was really nice and cool. On my way I passed by Qay9ar to grab some goodies.

When I had arrived the girls had already gathered and were having fun and we jumped in. Picnics are all about food and laughter in good weather. Given I cannot replay what we’ve laughed about I’ll show you the food :)

Boo 3li juice ;) Normal cocktail but with vanilla ice cream instead of banana and milk. It was so cool and refreshing

Bufak o Bo6a6 o Tabasco, 7g el teberbes :D

Kitko rings!!! I’ve been secretly craving those lately

Of course fa6ayer ashkal o alwan.

Alnoury’s famous karak! At last I’ve tried it!

A huge Nuttella jar was present and attacked viciously :p Thank god I am not a fan of Nuttella!

My dear rainy brought me a special gift from Sultan Center, she remembered that I love it from a post I’ve written almost a year ago! I was so touched thank you 7yati :*

Then as nightfall had befallen and the Maghrib prayers were called outs, the leaves started rustling with a heart wrenching beautiful breeze rarely found at this time of year. I looked up at a nearby tree and saw the moon and my favorite star eliminated by the dusk. It was so beautiful and stupid me could’t take a good picture that would capture that beauty :(

By then we were attacked by a white rabbit who was jumping nearby so it was time to go home.

My dear ladies, ga3datkom ma tenmal. I really had a fabulous time! If only we had that kind of weather in Kuwait all year long 7safa :(

Qay9ar’s Zaatar Pizza

You know what’s as good as Qay9ar’s pizza? Qay9ar’s Zaatar Pizza!!!

If you are lucky to stumble into a Cesar’s branch when a Zaatar Pizza is just out of the oven, or if you ask for it specifically and are willing to wait 15-20 minutes till they bake you some, you are in for one lip smacking treat!

Those little wonders have the softest based -just like the normal pizza- and topped with a tangy mix of no-frills Zaatar and plenty of green olives. I can’t describe the taste, you have to bite into one and see for yourself, but I advice you not to get more than one dozen and to eat it straightaway. You will polish it in moments

I am surprised that not many people know about Qay9ar’s Zaatar pizza and how good it actually is! One of my favorite Zaatar food items around K-Town. If you are a Zaatar fan and you haven’t try it before, you really really REALLY should. O if you are a first timer I highly recommend you try it from their Qurtoba branch which in my opinion makes it the best.
