Now in Large Print editions

All of my titles are now being published in large print editions. If anyone has an elderly relative with vision issues, please consider one of my books for the holidays.

Back to the pumpkins …

Back to the Pumpkins

I defrosted some of my pumpkin stash for tomorrow’s pumpkin pie.  But what do I do with the leftover pumpkin?

My recipe database, that I’ve been using for over 30 years, has about 45 pumpkin-related recipes.  My problem is that I’m cooking for the sake of not wasting pumpkin, as opposed to cooking with love and heart because it IS pumpkin.

Those orange-colored guys really get to me every year.

Mode of Transpo

Mode of Transpo

When you live near a big city that is also a major transportation hub, the options for a day in the city are plentiful.  Bus? Takes time, lots of stop-and-go, smelly, hot, but good views on the way in, providing, of course, that your city is pretty. Train? Need to get to a train station, expensive, can break down underground(!), good views are only above-ground, but fast.  Car? Traffic jam-ups, no view since you’re concentrating on driving, expensive to park, possibility of a parking ticket, but door-to-door service.  Cab? You never know who’s driving, can screw you by taking the long way, but at least you’re not the one driving.  Doing it every day is called “commuting,” and that is a terrible thing.  But a one-day visit to the city?  Let’s face it – that makes you a tourist.

Can You Thanksgiving?

Can You Thanksgiving?

My husband and I haven’t celebrated Thanksgiving together in over 15 years.  My sister-in-law reigns supreme in his family, and she hates me.  Instead, I either stay home alone and eat regional African food that he can’t stand (I think I was African in a previous life), or I go somewhere where I am loved.  Some years are more difficult than others when it comes to either staying home or feeling loved.

This year, I really needed the love, and I have it.  I won’t be able to sit at the table in my pajamas, and the food will be traditional instead of African.  I even cooked down one of my harvest pumpkins and will make a pie.  I love pie!  Thanksgiving will be a happy holiday this year.

So I ask myself: Why are some years different from other years?  What’s the secret for having annual serenity rather than chaos?  The holiday season is when most elderly people pass away.  What makes holidays so powerful that they can control life and death?

Yesterday’s Harvest

Yesterday, I harvested another pumpkin.  If I’m lucky, there will be one more.  I volunteered to make the Thanksgiving pumpkin pie, so I will sacrifice my little friend for the greater good.

There’s always next year’s harvest.

Tail Waggers

I got home yesterday afternoon and was greeted by the resident tail waggers, two rescue dogs from the SPCA.  There’s nothing like it.  It took longer to calm their delirium than it did to unpack.

The weather overall was pretty rainy, going up, coming back, and quite a bit in between.  Still, New England in the fall is picturesque, giving one the feeling of touching history.

Here are some scenes of a rainy day at the Mystic, CT, overlook off I95.
