UPDATE: The New Dog
We went to the SPCA and took the plunge. Our new puppy is 5 months old, 22 pounds, named Goldie. She has the cutest ears!

The new dog
For years, my husband and I have talked about getting a second dog -- a playmate for our current dog. But our house has very small rooms. One big dog is a speed bump. Two big dogs are an obstacle course.
But we miss our black lab dearly. At the local SPCA, there is a 6-year-old black lab named Otis that no one seems to want. My husband's heart has melted.

Questioning Blogs
Even people who I know and love are not interesting all the time. Why blogs? Do people really collect a fan base? Are there really avid blog readers? Lately, I've been looking at the numbers of comments on other folks' blogs, as well as my own. Typically: 0. Maybe: 1.
Those are not good odds. How much blog time is a waste, and how much is a safe place to vent? I wonder if we all should be checking these stats to see if blog time could be better spent in some other, more productive, activity.
I'm gonna go do some charity knitting. Now THERE's a return on investment!

Commune release party

An Even Year
In odd years, my age turns to an odd number. In even years, I turn an even number, and in 2014, I turn 60. Turning 40 really sucked. Turning 50 was a quiet milestone, a time for contemplation.
Turning 60 is so awesome, I can't wait! It's sort of an official launch of old age, where I can say what I want, wear what I want, spend money on what I want, and first and foremost, do what I want. Hello high-water plaid pants with stretchy elastic waistbands paired with an oversized Hawaiian shirt. My pantyhose was so old, it shredded, and I threw out every pair. I can see the pain of young people with the advantage of decades of experience, and know that they will be just fine eventually.
I sit on the sofa with my aging cat and aging dog, the three of us creaky couch potatoes. I don't just watch them get arthritic and stiff, I join them.
In a few weeks, I'll have an awesome birthday (I know I used awesome twice, but I love that word!). I hope you'll wish me well in the days to come.

Commune
I finished title number 5 today, Commune. Going through it for the 2nd time with the help of the dog and the cat, especially the cat. I'm embarrassed to say that I really like it.

Moving
I used to love to move from place to place. Just let the dust bunnies pile up. No need to clean when I'll be moving soon anyway.
Marriage changed that. We've been in this house for 17+ years. I have to clean. No training, just had to jump in and guess how it's done. I don't guess very hard, but we haven't died of food poisoning, either.
I may not be doing it right, but I'm not totally wrong either. Who are these people who love to clean, or who are obsessed with cleaning? What's their secret? Can I get an injection?
Or maybe cleaners need to relax a bit. It's all about balance.
