Our New Family Hobby

Our New Family Hobby

It is slightly leaking some information if I tell you all that my next book will be about an amateur metal-detecting treasure hunter.  This is pertinent because my husband and I agreed that we should experience this hobby first-hand.  We ordered a metal detector.  It arrived today, and I took it outside to wave it over the holes in the yard that my dog has dug up.  There was lots of beeping.

I’m not able to get on the ground and dig, so I will have to wait for my husband to get home from work for that.  All afternoon, I’ve been wondering what the heck is out there!  Our neighborhood is only 60 years old, built on Pennsylvania clay, so there can’t be anything out there of serious value.

So annoying!

Depression Carpenter: A Road Trip through the Gulf States during The Great Depression
Coming of age, race relations, historical fiction

A young man, Jackson “Jake” Ferry, born into a privileged New York family, loses them in a car accident. Young and wealthy, he needs to justify his existence during The Great Depression. He is skilled in carpentry and drives around the Gulf of Mexico, working on building projects with his peculiar friend and partner from Florida, Chin, who has cheerfully abandoned his family in favor of an adventure. Together, they travel an amazing road trip, helping poor folks along the way, repairing their homes and their lives.

From St. Augustine, Florida, through the Gulf states of Alabama, and Mississippi, Jake and Chin travel together as a team. A falling out parts the men in Louisiana. Jake stops in the capitol city of Baton Rouge to take care of some financial business. He realizes that he can’t run forever from his responsibilities as a wealthy man.

Eventually, Jake lands in Galveston, where he stays to help rebuild the island after their first Great Flood, building an inter-racial school for the island’s orphans. Retracing his steps, Jake reconnects with Chin in Vaughanville, Alabama, and the two head back to St. Augustine together.

The road trip comes to an end with Jake back in New York City, an older and wiser man with a new, compassionate, internal compass.

Book Review: Postcards, by Annie Proulx (2 coffee beans)

Book Review: Postcards, by Annie Proulx

2-CoffeeBeans-forKey

If you ever want to read a really awful road trip story, presented in the form of post cards sent home, read Postcards, by Annie Proulx.  A murderer on the run leads a terrible life.  The end.

Annie Proulx’s next novel, The Shipping News, was a wonderful book that was later made into a terrible movie.  Skip Postcards and go straight to The Shipping News.

Stop Fussing!

Stop Fussing!

I’m talking about writing.  Stop being a fussy writer!  Here are some examples that make my worst list:

Older versus elder, oldest versus eldest (unless you’re writing in the time of Camelot, skip this one).

Lived in versus resided in or dwelt in (we get it; someone lived there).

My father versus my sire (You’re kidding, right? Was your father the king of England and you were forced to refer to him as “sire”?).

The coffee brewed versus ropes of dark liquid emerged (I am the first person to wax rhapsodic about coffee, but this is still pedantic!).

Hair versus tresses (Most of the long-hair’d are young people. How often do they refer to themselves as having tresses?).

Sweat beaded versus moisture pearled (it’s such CUTE moisture!).

Home/house versus abode, or worse, manse (this is aimed directly at romance writers!).

Four-footed companion versus dog/cat (OK, I can live with this one).

There are many, many more, and I encounter them too often.  I understand wanting to combat “the boredom factor,” or using the same old words, but if they still speak to the subject matter in a clear and concise manner, I’m a cheerleader for the mundane.
