Jessica E. Subject’s Weekly Writing Update ~ Sick Children
Hello! It’s Tuesday, and time for another update. I had kids home sick three out of five days last week, so I didn’t get any writing done. I did work on formatting for several projects though.
ALIEN KISSES AT MIDNIGHT ~ As you know, this New Years’ Eve short alien romance is finished. This story has been returned from my beta reader, and I have started formatting it. BRYCE ~ I’m still at 7,108 words.
MADE FOR HER ~ I have revised this story, and am working on expanding it with another chapter or two. I also have a cover request out for this title.
ALIEN NEXT DOOR: THE COMPLETE SERIES ~ I am working on getting this set ready in both ebook and print formats. I have done some of the formatting, and have to polish them up now. I have a cover request out for this as well.
GOALS FOR THE WEEK ~ I will try to avoid getting the cold my kids have had, write as many words as possible on Bryce, finish revising Made For Her, and work on formatting the other stories mentioned above.

Here’s seven from THE STAR PRINCESS, a New Adult sci-fi romance fairy tale retelling of The Star Money. Enjoy!
Set-up: When Prince Deion arrived on Minjet, he was very ill. Now, he’s recovered, and is trying to find his aide, who left for the banquet while he slept. But, he quickly learns, this planet isn’t like Earth.
Stripping from his sour-smelling Earth clothes, Deion changed into one of the tight full-body suits set aside for him to wear. While the nylon-like material cupped him all over, it allowed him a wider range of movement than he’d expected. Lighter than the scuba suits used when studying marine life after the last war, the outfit even whisked away the moisture on his skin from his fever.
He charged out of the room but paused in the hall, trying to remember his way up to the main floor. No one had told him the people of Minjet built their homes into the sides of hills or on cliff faces, with the majority of the structure underground, but he did remember that much from his fevered trek to his quarters earlier in the day. From such an advanced race, he’d expected flying vehicles, skyscrapers far and wide—the future Earth should have had. Perhaps their technology had been his planet’s downfall. The people of Minjet had used renewable resources—wind, solar, and geothermal—rather than the coal and gas that caused pollution. A situation he could change upon his return to Earth, but first, he had to set the record straight about who the real prince was. He could only hope Cyrus had written the note as a joke and had not in fact introduced himself as the prince who would marry Ro’sa.
Arriving at a set of large steel double doors, Deion assumed it was the elevator and pressed his thumb to a sensor pad to the side. Would he even be on file? The doors skimmed open and he stepped inside, but there were no buttons for him to push to indicate where he wanted to go. As the doors closed, his heart beat faster. Had he entered some kind of storage closet instead? A prisoner containment unit?
The lights flickered overhead, and the unit jerked upward. Gravity weighed on his shoulders. Then the giant box stopped. The doors remained closed. Had he trapped himself inside? With slow steps, he moved back to the wall then slithered to the floor. Somehow, he had to get out.
The unit jerked once more. Sideways this time, taking him into the unknown. When it stopped, the doors finally did open, and Deion stumbled out into a long hallway. Never would he set foot in one of those contraptions again. He’d thought his stomach had settled, but with the shifting happening in his midsection, he wasn’t so sure. Stairs for the rest of the week.
A roar of laughter echoed from down the hall. Deion straightened his posture and headed toward the giant wooden doors in that direction. Perhaps he’d found the banquet hall. He peeked inside. Had Cyrus claimed to be prince?
Before he could spot his friend, a slender figure dressed in a skin-hugging white dress and a sparkling tiara bustled toward him. A princess—but was she his princess? Bright-red hair contrasted with her emerald-green skin, yet, at the flare of her nostrils and intense stare he stumbled a few steps back. If it was Ro’sa, had his absence caused her to be angry enough to breathe fire? Shoving the door the rest of the way open, she brushed past him without a glance.

In one week, Princess Ro’sa will board a spaceship, leaving her home on Minjet to be with her betrothed on Earth. I hate to admit it, but this is one of my favorite stories. The hero, Nate, is so cocky, but it takes the right woman to calm him down.
Here’s an excerpt:
Shit. Where is Wyn?
He searched the skies, spotting the star cruiser barreling toward him. What in Claustrum? His friend would kill him and everyone on the streets. Nate continued running to the field and a line fell from the ship. His chest tightened. No way! I have to climb that? Yeah, right. He didn’t do stunts.
Dirt shot up around him as more blasts came from the men wanting him dead. Guess I have no other choice. Time to be a daredevil. He darted toward the dangling rope, praying to the gods Wyn’s stunt would work. Lifting his arms, he reached for the knot at the end and grabbed hold, asking for the strength to maintain his grip.
In an instant, he lifted off the ground, clinging to the lifeline. A few more laser beams shot past. All at once, the burly men below lowered their guns, staring at him. And his denims rested around his ankles, exposing him for all to see. Well, that explains the sudden breeze.
“Told you mine’s bigger than yours,” he shouted.
When another beam burnt a hole through his pants, he pulled his knees up, trying to save his vital organs. He spun around, hanging on tight while Wyn circled back, racing him away from danger.
Beyond the docks of the port, Nate dropped the line. He yanked up his still smoking jeans, waiting for Wyn to land. Once the door to the ship opened, he rushed inside.
“Go, go, go.”
He swung into the second seat, his heart hammering, as he helped program a course out into space.
“Why do I always wind up catching you with your pants around your ankles every time we go out?”

Something tickled his ear, and teeth nipped the lobe. Oh, he liked it a bit rough.
“Oh yeah, baby. Bite me again. Harder.” Rex opened his eyes, finding himself on his side, face-to-face with the rabbit.
“Screw that!” He scrambled back, landing bare-assed on the floor.
Screw bunny?
His wolf’s puzzled response had him crab walking toward the door. How the hell had it gotten in bed with him? Hunter. That shithead.
Leaving the rabbit there, Rex shoved onto his feet and stormed upstairs to their room. He opened the door with so much force it slammed against the wall, causing Priss to bark at the end of the bed.
His righteous indignation diminished slightly with Hunter’s Glock trained on him. Maybe he needed to rethink how soft the former assassin had gotten. His friend lowered the gun and glared at him.
“What the hell, Hunter?” He planted his hands on his hips, more confident without a gun pointed at his face.
Casey sat up and rubbed his eyes, his reddish-blond hair standing on end. “What’s the naked, crazy man yelling about?”
Hunter covered the little wolf’s eyes. Shifters weren’t prudes, but he was one possessive dude now he had a mate. “What’s your damage? And go put some clothes on. Casey doesn’t need to see your man bits.”
“As if you didn’t know. I moved here, froze my balls off last winter, and how do you repay that friendship? By putting a rabbit on my bed. That wasn’t funny. I could have eaten him.” His stomach churned even though his wolf huffed in denial, insulted by the accusation.
No eat. Wolf like bunny.
Yeah, probably too much, you dumb wolf.

Naked, on the side of the road #MidWeekTease from ALIEN KISSES AT MIDNIGHT
Happy Wednesday! It’s time for my Mid Week Tease post! Mid Week Tease is an author meme started and hosted by author Sandra Bunino, where authors share snippets from their recent releases, back list titles, and works-in-progress (WIPs). For today’s post, I’m sharing an excerpt from ALIEN KISSES AT MIDNIGHT, a New Year’s Eve alien romance short story.
This excerpt is from the beginning of the story…
Dena slumped into the driver’s seat and slammed the door shut. She gripped the wheel and breathed in deep, attempting to control the anger surging through her. She yearned to stick around the hospital, ensure her niece’s convulsions stopped but her blood pressure would skyrocket if she spent one more second in the presence of her brother and sister-in-law. They blamed her for ruining their plans for New Year’s Eve. If not for the doctor stating Emily should have been brought to the hospital earlier in the day when her fever had spiked, Dena’s parents would have likely blamed her, too.
Resisting the urge to bang her head against the steering wheel, Dena started her car. She put it in drive and headed for home. Definitely a night she wouldn’t soon forget. No matter how much she wanted to.
Turning right at the next set of lights, she drove out of the city, her home on a small plot of land in the country with a dairy farm on one side and woods on the other. She yearned to crawl into her warm bed. Screw staying up for the countdown to the new year. She had no one to spend it with anyway.
Snow started to fall. Big, fat flakes stuck to the windshield. Dena flicked on her wipers before turning left onto a gravel road, her house at the end of the mile and a quarter. A dark figure leaped in front of her—a deer. She slammed on the brakes, gripping the wheel to keep from swerving into the ditch. The animal thumped against the hood. Too late. She hadn’t slowed enough. When her car finally halted, Dena jerked the car into park and rushed out. She was lucky the deer hadn’t hit her windshield. Her last vehicle ended up in the scrap yard that way.
Spotting nothing but a slight dent in the hood she glanced in front of her car. Instead of the brown-furred creature she expected, a naked man kneeled on the ground.
Holy shit! What was he doing out on her road, naked? Was he drunk? Had she hit him hard enough to knock his clothes off? He didn’t seem injured in any way, no blood, scratches, or limbs sticking out in awkward directions.
Lifting his knee, he grabbed her bumper, attempting to stand. He stared up at her, as if just noticing she stood there. Tilting his head to the side, he furrowed his brows.
“I’m so sorry. I didn’t see you until the last minute.”
He didn’t respond, simply kept his attention on her.
“Get in the car. I’ll take you to the hospital.” If her vehicle still worked after the collision. He still needed to be checked out, even with no indication of any injury.
“No hospital.” He backed away from her. “I’m fine.”
“Then let me take you back to my place. You can warm up and I’ll find you some clothes.” A stupid move, but she couldn’t leave him on the side of the road. Especially after she’d hit him.

After a family emergency that wasn’t her fault, Dena Volger yearns to sleep through New Year’s Eve and forget it all, wake up to the new year with a new outlook, and maybe even a new family. Minutes from home, she hits a creature with her car. But instead of the deer she expects, she finds a sexy, naked man on the side of the road. With green skin! Now, she must decide what to do with him.

“I can’t do this!” Kendra moaned and glared at Alexis in the dressing room mirror. She had one boob in a coconut cup and one boob that refused to go in the other bra cup. “I can’t!”
Alexis walked over and calmly pushed Kendra’s hands out of the way. She lifted the problem coconut shell cup and gently guided the uncooperative breast into place. “Situation resolved.”
Tears threatened and Kendra’s stomach churned. “That was only part of what’s wrong.”
She’d been stressed ever since learning about this arranged meeting between her and the two cowboys from Kansas. She’d been dreaming about a fantasy, sexy cowboy for so long. But two at the same time? What if neither of them met her visualization? Would she be soured on all cowboys? Would her fantasies be ruined forever? She didn’t have time in her harried life for more than the occasional fantasy. She needed it.
She exhaled deeply, wincing at the slight movement of the rough shells over her tender breasts. She still hadn’t gotten around to replacing the felt lining and she would pay for that negligence today. “My fantasies are all I have. If this goes wrong…. If they are—”
“This could be far better than those dreams of yours,” Alexis chastised with a frown. “It’s two cowboys.”
Kendra paced away and fluffed out her skirt. “Could be being keywords.”
A tear trickled down her cheek and she dashed it ruthlessly away. Then her shoulders slumped and she mumbled miserably, “I should never have agreed to any of this.” She glowered at Alexis. “You pushed me into it, all of it. Agreeing to spend some kind of night with two cowboys is bad enough. But you accepted this dance show without discussing it with me. And they are supposed to meet me here.”
She paced across the small room again, fluffing the sides of her grass skirt again. “First impressions are a big deal, you know. And here I’ll be shimmying my ass around wearing a pink skirt made of fake grass and bouncing my boobs in a really dumb coconut shell bra.”
To her disgust, Alexis laughed. “They’ll think themselves the luckiest cowboys in the world.”
