Conduct Series Blog Tour: My Writing Family by Jennifer Lane

I'd like to welcome Jennifer Lane to Mark of the Stars.

While she writes under the name Jennifer Lane, she practices as a psychologist in Ohio. The tales of healing and resilience from her career have inspired her to write her own stories: The Conduct Series.

With Good Behavior began with two cons trying to make it on the outside: running from the Mafia, joking about sexy vegetables, and just maybe falling in love. Bad Behavior, the next in line, reveals that it's not so easy to escape the past, but the plucky parolees once again strive to persevere. She's currently at work on the third and final installment of the series: On Best Behavior.

You can find Jennifer on her blog: http://jenniferlanebooks.blogspot.com/

My Writing Family

Thank you for being a stop on The Conduct Series Blog Tour, Jessica! I'd like your readers to know that there are only two days left of Omnific Publishing's Veterans Day sale, when they can purchase book one of the series (With Good Behavior) for only $.99 in the month of November.

Today I'd like to discuss the wonderful people who have helped my writing, above and beyond my family.

I trained for many years to become a psychologist and have loved my career as a therapist. I never imagined becoming a writer. Then, in 2007, I joined an online community where some individuals had posted their stories for all to read. Intrigued, I started writing my own story, and felt surprised to receive encouraging comments. It was so motivating to receive instant feedback on each chapter I'd post—quickly I became hooked.

There've been several online friends world-wide who cheered me on from the get-go, and I've tried to thank them by turning them into characters in my novels!

* Lorne. She lives in England and is one of the funniest women I've ever met. When Lorne asked to be a character in my first story, I cast her as my heroine's roommate in a psychiatric hospital hee hee. Lorne took an architectural cruise in Chicago with me for research, and is the inspiration for the character "Lauren" mentioned by Sophie in With Good Behavior.

* Amy. Amy lives in North Carolina. She's vivacious and fun, and a big fan of smut. She's egged me on to write sex scenes! *blushes* Against the Tide, my first young adult novel to be released in March of 2012, features Detective Amy, who likes to ogle the hot hero before she arrests him. Amy, Lorne, and I have met up in Chicago several times for girls-gone-wild weekends.

* Marilyn. Another Brit, Marilyn is so kind and wise. She's a showty with red hair and green eyes, just like the character she inspired in With Good Behavior: Detective Marilyn Fox! Like me, she's into handcuffs.

*Ina. Warm and caring, Ina is in the mental health field in Scandanavia, so I cast her as a Naval Academy psychologist in Against the Tide.

*Janine and Cécile. These ladies, from South Africa and France, respectively, have been so encouraging to me as an author. We still chat online all the time and they're hilarious and insightful.

My writing family also includes my bff Gwynn and my two book clubs.

* Gwynn. She swam and played volleyball with me in college and has always been there for me. Gwynn is a big Chicago Cubs fan and still hasn't forgiven me for making my hero and heroine White Sox fans.

* Book Club with friends. Check out the book club tab on my blog to see a photo of these lovely ladies holding a copy of With Good Behavior. Joining this group in 2001 got me reading again and we've all been through a lot together.

*Book Club at work. How fun to discuss my book and other books with a group of therapists and staff!

Finally, fellow authors I've met have become part of my writing family. Jessica, you gave me some helpful feedback about point-of-view, inspiring me to try making some changes for my next novel (read more here). Thank you! I'm also grateful to Darcia Helle and my Omnific Publishing sisters.

Writers experience many doubts so the support of people like these is essential.

An Alpha's Path: Interview with Author Carrie Ann Ryan & Giveaway!!

Please welcome Carrie Ann Ryan to Mark of the Stars.

Carrie Ann Ryan is a paranormal and contemporary romance author. Her first book, An Alpha's Path, is the first book in her Redwood Pack series. She's also an avid reader and lover of romance and fiction novels. She love meeting new authors and new worlds. Any recommendations you have are appreciated. Carrie Ann lives in New England with her husband and two kittens.

Congratulations on your upcoming release, An Alpha's Path! How long have you been writing with the hopes of publication?

CAR: I started writing novels about a year ago. I only started thinking about publication and sharing my work since July. It's been an interesting year to say the least.

How did you get started?

CAR: I've read over 5,000 books in the last three years and found myself thinking about additional characters or storylines that just wouldn't go away. So I sat down on my computer and wrote a horribly done short story about a family and their children. Honestly, it was a sad little attempt at a romance novel. But it started a bug in me and I couldn't stop writing.

Now I'm working on a seven book series and thinking about what I can do next!

5,000? Wow!! Can you tell us about your upcoming release, An Alpha's Path?

CAR: It's a book about finding your true love. Someone to complete you. Sounds cliché – but really – who doesn't want to find that. Mel is a brilliant chemist who's never really had a decent date and Kade is a century old werewolf coming off a bad breakup. Together there is a connection of hope and sweaty goodness.

Oh and did I mention it was a blind date?

They may have great chemistry – yes I just laughed at my own joke – but that doesn't mean they can stand it in the long haul. You're just going to have to read to find out.

Where did the idea for An Alpha's Path come from?

CAR: Some of you may know I'm a chemist by day. So, while sitting at my lab bench I thought of what would happen if I mixed my world with the supernatural.

And no, my husband is not a werewolf – though he does grow a full beard in like a day. LOL

What are you working on now?

CAR: An Alpha's Path is the novella to start my Redwood Pack series. So I'm very excited to work on Book 2 and Book 3. A Taste for a Mate, Book 2, is Jasper's story. I'm having an interesting time finding a darker part of the world. Book 3 is Trinity Bound, Reed's story, and has taken me to a new direction I've never thought I'd right about.

An Alpha's Path starts my Redwood Pack world, but Books 2-7 are part of a huge story arc that's making me want to smile and pull my hair out. But what writer hasn't felt that way?

What? I'm alone in this? Uh oh.

Not alone at all. Can you describe your daily writing routine?

CAR: It varies actually. I wish I had a set routine, but my daily job doesn't allow that. But after work, I get home, make dinner, hang out with the hubby and kittens, then sit at my laptop and write.

I try to get at least 1000 words a day. Even if the words are just a free write or an outline. I try to immerse myself in my world at least once a day.

I'm a huge plotter, so taking time every day to put words down help.

That is great discipline. What genres do you enjoy reading? Writing?

CAR: Romance. LOL. I read everything in it. Contemporary, Historical, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Western, a mix of all of them. I'm not picky of the genre – as long as the author put their heart into it, I'll read it.

At the moment I'm writing paranormal. I've done contemporary before and will go back and write some more in that genre. I have this little story in the back of my head that is a modern western, so I may go there as well.

But I don't have the patience or research for historical or Sci-Fi. I love reading about them, but I don't think I could ever do the daunting task of them.

I don't mind genre hopping in my own work – as long as it's in different series. I can't wait to see what I come up with.

What author(s) have influenced your writing style?

CAR: Um, that's a hard one. Rebecca Royce was the one who got me to start to write. She's a huge influence in my writing life.

In the way I describe things I took a page from Nalini Singh and Devon Monk. I love the way they describe colors, textures and tastes. I know I don't have a fraction of their talent – but it's my goal. :-)

Yes, kudos to Rebecca Royce. She is a huge inspiration to me as well. :) Where do your best ideas come from?

CAR: My sarcasm? I really don't know where they come from. Day to Day experiences or the voices in my head. Honestly, I just start typing and the characters do what they want.

Voices in your head? Um, I thought that was just me. LOL Now, I know you've read tons of books in the past couple years, but what one would you say is your favorite?

CAR: Oh my, Jessica! You don't hold back do you? Archangel's Consort by Nalini Singh, Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Coming Undone by Lauren Dane… That's the three that just came to me. But I have a different favorite every day LOL. The best book I've read this week was Courting Darkness by Yasmine Galenorn. Loved it.

Is there anything else my readers should know about you?

CAR: I love talking with people. So find me on Twitter or Facebook and I will totally have a conversation LOL.

I also am mildly – okay largely – sarcastic. Anyone that can make me laugh has made a friend in me.

Where can my readers find you?

Where can my readers find your books?

CAR: An Alpha's Path will be released on Dec 5th. You will be able to find it then on Amazon and Barnes and Noble in eBook format.

Thanks Carrie Ann! It was great having you hear. :) All the best with this release and those in the future!

An Alpha's Path Blurb

Melanie is a twenty-five year old chemist who has spent all of her adult life slaving at school. With her PhD in hand, she's to start her dream job, but before she does, her friend persuades her to relax and try to live again. A blind date set up through her friends seems like the perfect solution. Melanie can take one night away from the lab and let her inner vixen out on a fixed blind date - a chance to get crazy with a perfect stranger. The gorgeous hunk she's to meet exceeds her wildest dreams – be he is more than what he appears and Melanie's analytical mind goes into overdrive.

Kade, a slightly older werewolf (at over one hundred years), needs a night way from the Pack. Too many responsibilities and one near miss with a potential mate made Kade hide in his work, the only peace he can find. His brother convinces him to meet the sexy woman for a one night of fun. What could it hurt? But when he finds this woman could be his mate, can he convince her to leave her orderly, sane world and be with him and his wolf-half, for life?

An Alpha's Path Excerpt

Melanie sat at her table and checked her watch. He was only three minutes late. That didn't mean he was going to stand her up. Right? He just wasn't a perpetually early person like her. It wasn't evidence that they weren't compatible.

Compatible? Gawd. She needed another drink. This was just for one night. One night only – if he even showed.

She let out a deep breath and was about to order another drink when she caught sight of an absolutely gorgeous specimen of man.

His body towered over six feet with wide shoulders and a trim waist. The kind of guy displayed on one of those silly romance novel covers. Dark brown, almost black hair, that barely reached his shoulders begged for her hands to tangle in them. A few luscious locks fell into his eyes.

Those eyes.

Deep green eyes set under dark lashes. Pools of jade, swallowing her whole. They were piercing and shifted throughout the room, taking in his surroundings. Yet it felt as though he never let his eyes leave her. Oh my. Mel fanned her face before blushing when she realized what she was doing. Damn he was beautiful.

He practically prowled through the room drawing the attention of almost every woman and even some of the men. An almost animalistic wave of seduction ebbed from him.

Damn.

Please, if there was a God, let this be the mysterious Kade Jamenson. Please. Larissa didn't give her a picture or description of his looks as she said it would ruin the moment of first meeting. Melanie hadn't agreed when she read that, but if this were Kade she would take back anything bad she ever thought about her best friend.

Six Sentence Sunday: 11/27/11 – Never Gonna Let You Go ~ A First Kiss

Thank you to everyone who keeps coming back to read and comment on my excerpts every week. You all rock! :)

More from Never Gonna Let You Go. (blurb here) Calla and Melina (Holloway) have finished their observations of the alien wildlife and are ready to go back to camp.

Instead of packing up the Jeeps and heading back to camp, they lingered, staring at each other in the moonlight. Calla didn't want to move. She fixated on her commander's mouth. What would it feel like?

Before she realized what was happening, Melina pressed her lips to Calla's. Holloway's hand met the small of her back, pulling her in closer.

Visit http://www.sixsunday.com/ to find out who's participating in Six Sentence Sunday this week or follow the #sixsunday hashtag on twitter.

The Secrets of Dreams: Interview with author, Lisa Fox & Giveaway

Welcome, Lisa to Mark of the Stars. It is a pleasure to have you here today. I first read your work through Six Sentence Sunday, and still enjoy your excerpts and the hot pictures you post every week. Can you tell us about your recent release?

LF: Thanks! I try to make my blog a happy place of hotness for everyone that visits.

My recent release is The Secrets of Dreams, a short story about a lonely woman, a magic book and twin demigods of legend.

What inspired you to write The Secrets of Dreams?

LF: I've been wanting to do a M/F/M story for a while now and I love Halloween. Combining the two seemed like a brilliant idea. Lol!

For those who don't know, can you explain the significance of the Samhain and how it relates to The Secrets of Dreams?

LF: Samhain is a very important witches' holiday, a night to honor the dead. It is also the only night that a certain spell in an ancient grimoire will work.

Did you have to do any research for this story?

[image error]LF: I wish I could say I found myself a set of twin gods and did tons of research, but sadly that wouldn't be true.

Can you tell us more about twin demigods Calen and Rist?

LF: They are entirely fabricated mythological demigods of dreams.

When it comes to erotic romance, do you have a clear idea of what's going to happen before you write the story, or do you let the characters tell their story as you go?

LF: I never know where the story is going when I sit down to write which is a lot of the reason why it takes me so damn long to finish anything. The characters always dictate their own story.

What it your favorite paranormal being?

LF: A difficult question. Right now, I'd have to go with angels, both of fallen and heavenly variety.

Who are your favorite authors?

LF: Stephen King, Joe Hill, Margaret Atwood, Haruki Murakami

I've read many of your short stories and your novella and loved them all. Do you find short stories easier or harder to write than a novel or novella?

LF: Thanks! I'm incredibly flattered and thrilled that you liked them. I've found that length has little bearing on the ease or difficulty of writing a story. I tend to write shorter for now because I'm still finding my voice and groove in erotica and romance, but I have plans to tackle a full-length novel very soon. I don't think it will be any more difficult that writing a novella, just more time consuming.

[image error]I know you are a huge Hugh Jackman fan, but is Wolverine your favorite super hero?

LF: I think I like Batman the most actually. All that darkness and angst and fortitude is very sexy. And he has the best villains.

If you could be any superhero, who would you be?

LF: I don't know that I would want to be a superhero honestly. Seems like it would be a lot of work.

Thank you so much for being here today, Lisa! I really enjoyed reading The Secrets of Dreams, and I hope my readers will, too.

LF: Thanks for having me over Jessica! This was a super-fun interview!
