Melina gets an unexpected call from Brook:
“Hello, Melina? Are you busy?” A string of choked sobs followed.
Melina shuffled back a step. “Brook, is that you? Are you okay?”
“No.”
Silence.
Shit, what’s wrong? Her heart hammered. “Where are you? I’ll be right there if you tell me.”
“Home, but….” Brook sniffled. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Sorry to bother you.”
The earpiece clicked. She tapped it, hoping Brook hadn’t hung up. “No, if you need me….” But it was no use. The droning buzz of a terminated call echoed in her ear.
She spun on her heel. The woman she adored needed her, whether she believed it yet, or not. The fact Brook had called at all was proof she needed a friend at the moment. And if she found out that asshole of an ex-boyfriend had pulled another stunt, she’d skin him. With no hesitation, she raced toward the first apartment of the city, where Brook occupied the penthouse suite, courtesy of Daddy Dearest.

“What haven’t I heard?” she asked. Her breath hitched and her pulse raced. What could I have missed?
“Come away with me to the terrace. I wish to speak to you in private. We can’t have half of London listening in.”
She followed Lady Coxley outdoors, leaving behind the sounds of merriment to be embraced by the shrouded darkness of night and silence.
“They say the marquess will not marry until he’s found her.”
“Until he’s found who?”
“The one who broke his heart. But in all honesty, everyone knows it’s you. With any luck, perchance some horrible fate will happen upon Henry.”
If I were only so lucky. “You shouldn’t talk like that! And for the record, the marquess and I were done long ago. Remember, he’s the one who left me.”
“Isabel, you cannot expect me to believe that you haven’t thought about that man—at least once or ever—during the course of this sham of a marriage of yours. The haute ton in its entirety knows where he is right now. And you’d be a fool to think Henry gives two ninnies about your welfare.”
The sound of someone clearing their throat interrupted them.
“Excuse me, ladies, but I was wondering if perchance I could steal Her Grace for a dance.”
Good grief. Did he hear any of our discussion? I cannot believe he’s actually here.Heat coursed through Isabel at the thought of holding him once again. She nodded and held out her gloved palm for him to take. “I’d be honored, My Lord.”
“The pleasure is all mine, Your Grace.”
Leaving behind Lady Coxley, she followed his lead inside for a waltz.
“It’s been too long, Isabel. I’ve missed you terribly,” he whispered as they took a turn about the dance floor. Nathaniel bowed and took her hand. His touch warmed her, and the gentle squeeze that followed reassured her that the flame they once had was still there.
She and Henry hadn’t danced since their wedding and even then, he quickly discarded her to dance with the Duchess of Downsbury. If she’d only known her dismissal that evening would be the first of many others. For the most part, her husband had two left feet, but Nathaniel whisked her away gracefully to the tune. She wished to kiss him again and remind herself of their time together. Good heavens, Isabel. You’re married. Enough of this foolishness!
Isabel felt him pulling her closer as his arm at the small of her back pushed her in. His head dipped down, and, naturally, she looked up at him, ignoring every stare and whisper as they moved together. She finally cringed and mustered the courage to ask him the one thing weighing heavily on her mind. “Why did you take so long? Why didn’t you come sooner? Nathaniel, there hasn’t been a day I haven’t thought of you.”
As the music wound down and the dancers departed, Isabel locked her eyes on his and felt a tear escape. “You’ve been missed greatly, My Lord.”
His thumb swiped away the drop. “My dear, there hasn’t been a day, hour, or dream you haven’t occupied.”
Her chest tightened with his admission. Could he have really wanted me all this time?
“Nathan—”

Back List Blast from Beneath the Starry Sky, an NOR Top Pick #romance #1NightStand
Hello and welcome to the last Back List Blast post of June! Summer is here, and it is hot, Hot, HOT! Today’s excerpt is from Beneath the Starry Sky, which was my second story to release, and is now a Night Owl Reviews Top Pick.
The pine and fir trees thinned out, giving way to more rock. A wall of limestone ran along one side of the path, the occasional bristle cones on the other, beauty she’d lost in the depths of the cities she’d spent her days in.
A hand grabbed her arm. “Your mind started to wander again. You slowed down.” He backed her against the side of the mountain, his hands on either side of her head. “Now it’s time to finish rescuing you.”
He snapped open the backpack buckles and let it fall to the ground, before his lips were on hers. He kept his kisses light, but she wanted more. She pulled him closer, her body pressed between a wall of rock and one of muscle and masculinity. His kisses deepened and his tongue probed for an opening. She granted him access, her own tongue plunging for a deeper connection.
She moaned into his mouth as his hands travelled up her shirt, cupping each breast, her bra still on the dressing room floor. Never before had she had sex outside, but now was as good a time as any. His hard member pressed against her stomach, but she didn’t want the clothing between them any longer. Slipping her hands under his shirt, she lifted it off.
He had hers off in one swift motion.
“Tamara,” he whispered, his broad, firm chest pressed against her bare breasts. “I want you. We’re not there yet, but I want you now.”

Excerpt:
A cold wind blasted his back and Gethyon turned his head, glancing over his left shoulder. Darkness seethed into the tunnel behind, a billowing, writhing mass of shadow tinged with sullen red and lurid purple in his heightened vision.
He couldn’t move. His feet seemed pinned to the floor, his muscles locked into rigid immobility. The Siah-dhu howled at him, their voice leeching all will and all power from him. Despite the sparks of power within him, the darkness writhed through his gut, gnawing with jagged teeth as it twisted though his mind. It was hunger magnified a thousand times, as if the vacuum of space had opened up inside him. He fell to his knees.
Gethyon. Not quite a voice, not quite any sound he had ever heard, the Siah-dhu called his name. The roiling mass drew closer. A chill gale blasted over him and snatched all the breath and warmth from him, sucking the life out of him.
“No.” The single word snatched him back from the edge. He hadn’t come so far or lost so much to surrender. As the Siah-dhu pulsed toward him intent on his consumption, he forced himself up again and turned his back on the shadows. It was the hardest thing he had ever done, to resist that pull into oblivion. The edges of the black cloud twined around him, incorporeal fingers striving to grasp him, seething forward to swallow him…
The world disappeared.

Brook had the kind of figure that inspired nude paintings by masters of the past, and her own late-night masturbation fests. Slamming a fist on the table, Melina groaned. She had to get out, clear her mind with a run. Otherwise, she would be back in her bedroom, fantasizing—again—about the woman she would never have. Brook would never go against the rules, never take a chance at a relationship with a woman. She wasn’t the type to disobey her father.
