Writing SFR vs. Romantic Suspense – Guest Post & #Giveaway by Diane Burton #TWRP #MYAHA

Science Fiction Romance vs Romantic Suspense
Guest Post by Diane Burton
Thanks so much for having me back, Jessica. And I love the topic you suggested. Readers know me from my adventure romances that take place in space and other worlds. My latest book ONE RED SHOE is a romantic suspense. It’s an adventure romance that takes place in this world. Other than the locale, my writing in the two genres is very similar.
Setting (in SFR, sometimes called world building): Stories have to take place somewhere. Even though my SFR books take place in space, on a starship, or an alien planet, I had to research what those locales could possibly look like. (I sure wish I could have done in-person research of space and other planets.) In my romantic suspense, I also had to do research. Fortunately, I’ve been to many of the locales where ONE RED SHOE takes place, like New York City (I even researched the subway then had to rule it out as the place where the hero & heroine meet), Seneca, NY, Holland, MI, Chicago. Even my heroine’s hometown in Iowa is modeled after a small farming town where I’ve lived.
Suspense: All my SFRs have suspense and danger. Since I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer, I often don’t know who the villain is until near the end of the story. I know that sounds weird, but it’s true. In ONE RED SHOE, I knew from the beginning who but not why. By the very nature of the genre, romantic suspense had plenty of danger.
Villains: I don’t write about psychopaths. They creep me out. All my villains have logical reasons for why they do what they do. They rationalize their actions. In their minds, they’re justified. Whether those villains are in space or in NYC, they all have similar behavior in my stories.
Heroes & Heroines: What good is world building and villains if there aren’t any good guys? Somebody has to save the day, the country, the planet. I’d like to say my heroes are all tall, dark, and handsome. Since I’m tall, I do like tall men. I also prefer dark hair to blond (although Daniel Craig is making me change my mind about blond men). Handsome is in the eye of the beholder. But looks aren’t everything. Character revealed through action matters to my heroines. Same with my heroes. Being guys, they notice looks first. As they look deeper, they see the strength in the heroine. In ONE RED SHOE, my heroine doesn’t think she’s heroic at all. Half the time, she’s scared to death. The hero has to tell her how courageous she is before she realizes it.
Happily Ever After: A reader who picks up a science fiction romance or a romantic suspense expect a satisfying ending—a happy ever after. The villain is going to be caught. The hero and heroine will get together. Whether they decide to live in Iowa, Washington, DC or on a starship, my hero and heroine will always have a happy ever after.
So I don’t think writing science fiction romance is all that different from romantic suspense. No matter what I write, I always have a great time going on an adventure with my characters.
Wannabe writer rescues wounded spy while risking her heart.
Daria Mason’s life is too predictable. Nothing ever happens in her small Iowa town where everybody knows everybody else. But when she travels to New York City looking for a little excitement, she never expects to bring home a wounded spy.
From the moment agent Sam Jozwiak steals intel vital to US security from a Russian Mafia kingpin, Murphy’s Law takes over. No matter how he covers his tracks, the kingpin’s assassins find him. What’s worse than getting shot in the butt? Accepting help from an Iowa tourist.
Sam and Daria flee cross country with the assassins right behind them. Sharing danger and excitement—and a few kisses—with Sam soon has Daria convinced he’s the man for her. He thinks she’ll be better off once he’s out of her life for good. With their lives on the line, can she convince him they belong together?
Excerpt from One Red Shoe:
Sam found a door with a push plate and faded square where a sign used to be. This had to be it. He carefully pushed open the door. No noise to attract Grashenko & Company if they came back. Good grief, the restroom was an explosion of pink. Pepto-Bismol pink with black trim. Sam didn’t have time to find the men’s room now. He would stop the bleeding and get out of this potential trap.
Skylights, dirty like the rest of the windows in the building, let in enough light to see. Good. He didn’t want to risk turning on a light that would shine under the door. Around a corner, hidden from the door, he found a long counter with a row of sinks and a mirror above. All the better to examine the damage done by that trigger-happy fool.
Sam unzipped his jeans and worked down his briefs to expose his hip. What a mess. Not for the first time, he cursed Grashenko for showing up in that hotel room in Smolensk. Sam’s hasty departure, with Yuri and Korioff on his tail, meant leaving behind his gear. His clothes, sunglasses, and emergency medical supplies would bring top dollar on the Russian black market. He would have to make do with what he had. Carefully, he turned a faucet to wet his handkerchief. He blew out a breath in relief the plumbing still worked and was used on a regular basis. No air hissed or sputtered, which would’ve brought Grashenko and Korioff back in a hurry.
With much twisting to see, Sam wiped away the worst of the blood. Amazed that there were paper towels in a dispenser, he folded several and stuffed them inside his briefs. He tried to zip his jeans but the bulge in back pressed on his raw flesh. Hell, he’d zip up when he was done.
When he bent to check his calf, he nearly keeled over from dizziness. He grabbed the counter. His shoe had absorbed the blood. None on the floor, thank God. No trail. Sam patted his shirt pocket and took out his agency cell phone. He needed to find out where the hell Teller was. That idiot better have a damn good reason for doing a no-show. Didn’t he realize the consequences? Didn’t he realize how little time they had to—
The air moved—his only warning that the door to the restroom had opened. A whirlwind in beige blasted past him. In that split second Sam instinctively cataloged the intruder. Female, five-ten, weight uncertain due to voluminous coat, late twenties, long dark single braid, penny loafers. And a large button clipped to her purse. Shit. More dangerous than a Russian Mafia hit man. A wide-eyed innocent. The kind he’d sworn to protect. And here he was bleeding like a stuck pig, so dizzy he was going to fall flat on his face.

#MySexySaturday – Time to get that dress off in HEY, SANTA #scifirom #holidayromance
Hi peeps! It’s the 19th week of My Sexy Saturday. Here are the details:
every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words,
sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.
Here’s seven from HEY, SANTA, an erotic sci-fi holiday romance.
Fumbling with the zipper behind her back, she unfastened her dress. She slid the straps over her shoulders and the material slithered down her body, to the floor.
Andy’s jaw dropped. Exactly the reaction she’d hoped for.
“I…I don’t know what to say.”
“Say you want me. Say that tonight I’m yours.” She cringed. Am I going too fast for him?
He rushed forward and claimed her lips in a hard, demanding kiss. Her mind stopped functioning, filled with undeniable need. Andy. She’d never wanted anything more in her life. Her own Greek god. As if Eros had seen her nighttime fantasies and plucked him away from Mount Olympus to meet her.
Fitting his firm body to hers, he guided her blindly until her back hit a hard surface. Oh, God. She moaned into his mouth, brushing her leg along the outside of his thigh. She craved him inside her, fucking her until they came.
He gripped her legs, lifting her up the wall. Straddling his waist, she sucked in a quick breath. She didn’t care where he took her, so long as he didn’t stop. At least he hadn’t shoved her out the door after seeing her nearly naked. He actually wanted her. For now.

Why A Hockey Romance Anthology? Going All In by Cassandra Carr, Isabo Kelly & Stacey Agdern
Why a hockey romance anthology?
Guest Post by Cassandra Carr
I became a hockey fan my first year of university. Which isn’t so remarkable, except when you consider the circumstances. I was 17, living in a different country. I’d chosen to live in an all girls dormitory, mostly because I’d refused to live anywhere that required me to climb a hill at the end of my day. I had a television in my dorm room, but I’d still join the large group of people congregating in front of the television in the dorm’s common room to watch various shows.
One evening, I was searching for something so I headed to the common room. There were only 3 people sitting in front of the television. I joined them. They were watching the CBC. A program called ‘Hockey Night in Canada.’ I was fascinated. Oh sure, I’d watched a few games with my family, even had gone to Madison Square Garden to watch the family’s team play. But this was different. I wasn’t watching the sport for or with my family. I was watching it for me.
“What’s your team?” One girl asked.
“The rangers,” I replied. Because they were. They were my family’s team, and now they were mine.
And so throughout that year, I got to know those gals. A canucks fan, a jets fan and a leafs fan. And me. The ranger fan.
That was a magical year, by the way. In the fall of ’93, alongside 3 other female hockey fans, I discovered the crazy obsessive hockey fan inside of me. The end of that school year saw the beginning of a cup run that would see a very special piece of hardware making it’s way to my home city.
So is it any wonder that I’d want to put together an anthology that celebrates my favorite sport, written with two female friends who happen to be amazing writers who share my passion for the sport? I think not.

Going All In
Cassandra Carr, Isabo Kelly, Stacey Agdern
Blurb: Professional hockey players Marcus, Alex, and Chris attend their team’s Vegas Night fundraiser unaware their lives will change forever. Can they face their difficulties and win the most important game of their lives – the game of love? These guys are going all in…
HEDGING HIS BET: Cassandra Carr
Marcus Mitchell never thought he’d find the love of his life with champagne dripping from her shirt rather than walking the runway at Fashion Week like the models he usually preferred, but you can’t always plan these things. Annalise Alonso isn’t going to make it easy for him, though—he’s going to have to work for her love. Now, Marcus is taking a shot and hedging his bet on love.
CASTING THE DIE: Isabo Kelly
After she sees his murder in a vision, Nathalie Mendez has to warn star hockey goalie Alexander Semenov of the danger. To keep him alive, she risks exposing her many secrets. But once the die is cast, her biggest gamble involves her heart.
PLAYING HER GAME: Stacey Agdern
Melanie Gould has been dubbed ‘The Girl in the Lace Corset’. But she doesn’t always like to be the loud mouth defender of the romances she writes, and is definitely not good at playing the games relationships require. Of course, she’s never gone head to head with a guy like Chris Emerson. Chris is trying to behave, and someone like Melanie would destroy his plans to stay under the radar. So what happens when the ‘Girl in the Lace Corset’ and the NHL’s most infamous bad boy go one on one? Will they play her game? Will they play his? Or will they both end up in the penalty box?
Available From
Amazon | Smashwords | Kobo | Barnes & Noble
Going All In will be at a special “introductory” price of $2.99 for two weeks after release. The regular price of $4.99 will begin after that, on 9/12/13.

#MySexySaturday – A moment to themselves before the battle in Never Gonna Say Goodbye #GLBT
Hello everyone! It’s the 18th week of My Sexy Saturday. Here are the details: every Saturday, published and unpublished authors will be sharing 7 words, sentences, or paragraphs from a work-in-progress or an already published story.
Today, I’m sharing an excerpt from my new release, Never Gonna Say Goodbye, the third book in The Underground series. Enjoy!
Will twisted around, grasping his hands. “Don’t worry about tomorrow. Everything will happen exactly as we’ve planned. In the evening, we’ll be celebrating again. Our victory.” He wrapped his arms around Tim, kissing his hard lips. A moan escaped, hunger rushing through his veins.
“But let’s forget about that for tonight.” He needed to be reminded of his purpose for fighting, too. Freedom. Freedom for the people, and freedom to love whomever he wanted.
Tim stroked the front of his pants. He hardened under his touch, aching with need. Bulge pressing against an open palm, Will craved the warm physique of his lover. So much time had passed since they’d last been intimate. Even with Tim’s return from Airondelle as their medic three days earlier, they’d had no time alone, due to their hasty preparations to attack Planet Core. His intense longing left him vulnerable, thinking unclearly. He needed a release to purge his mind, regain focus. And by the hard lines on his lover’s face, so did Tim.
Gripping the edges of the cotton material, he pulled the medic’s tunic over his head and untied the rope holding his pants up, releasing his thick sex. A deep grunt echoed through the room. He ran his hands down Tim’s strong arms, across the hardened planes of his chest. A figure any man would be jealous of, and one he never wanted to stop touching. “God, I’ve missed you.”
Pressing against his lush mouth, he sucked in his bottom lip. Tim’s erection pushed on his own. Sweet heavens. He longed to spin him around, shove him against the wall, and fuck him until he burst. Instead, he dropped to his knees and gripped his lover’s cock, running his thumb along the slick slit.
Tim quivered under his touch. “And I’ve missed you, too.” He leaned back, thrusting his stiff dick toward him.
Teasing his swollen head with his tongue, Will tasted his lover’s salty fluid. A flavor he could never get enough of. And after they took down Planet Core the next day, he could have his fill whenever he wanted. He wouldn’t have to hide his love for another man.

Five Reasons Even Unpublished Authors Should by on Goodreads by @Cassandra_Carr #buildingaudience #amwriting

Five Reasons Even Unpublished Authors
Should be on Goodreads
by Cassandra Carr
I was asked by the lovely Jessica Subject to talk about Goodreads today. Authors seem to have a love-hate relationship with Goodreads, but in my opinion, even if you stay far, far away from reviews of your own books, you should be on it. But what if you’re not published – yet? You should still be on it — and active. Here are five reasons why.
1. Goodreads is, bar none, the largest number of readers you can reach — whether you’re published or not. And getting to know readers is never a bad thing. This item is number one for a reason because that’s how important it is. Goodreads=readers more than ANY OTHER website online, including Facebook and Amazon (which just purchased Goodreads, incidentally).
2. Goodreads has groups — tons and tons and tons of them. Do you need to participate in all of them? Of course not. Pick two that are closely related to the genre you want to be published in, and start participating in discussions. People will get to know you in a non-pressure (no BUY MY BOOK!) situation. Then when you do become published, potentially thousands of readers of the exact type of book you write already know who you are. Discoverability (getting people to recognize your name and associate it with a particular topic or type of books) — is king in this business.
3. As far as I know, even as an yet-unpublished author, you can still make an author page on Goodreads. I’ve been on there so long I’m not sure I could back out enough to say that for certain, but if you can, great! That’s one less item you have to worry about when you begin promoting your books. You might have to add your books to the page — I always have to myself, though some publishers will do it for you — but all the other stuff, like your website URL if you have one, a section where anyone who comes to your page can see your blog posts, and other nice things like that are already taken care and ready to go.
4. You can friend anyone you want to. Just like Twitter or Facebook, you can send friend requests to anyone you want. That doesn’t mean they’ll accept the request, but hey, it doesn’t hurt. Did you know a lot of editors and agents are on Goodreads? Want to know what they read in their spare time (I’ll give you a moment to stop laughing about the concept of them having free time)? Are you curious about what kind of books they rate highly? Goodreads might have the answer.
5. Here’s one you might not have thought of, and feel free to think I’m nuts. Some authors stalk Goodreads for reviews of their own work. Some stay miles away. But it’s a fact of life that you’re going to get reviewed, whether it’s by a reader, another author, a book blogger, or a professional review site like Night Owl Reviews or The Romance Reviews. Want to learn how to deal with negative reviews? Go read some of the ones for your favorite books. I bet you’ll find some that will make you shake your head and wonder what the reader was thinking. You’ll come to realize that you can’t please everybody, nor should you try. But starting to insulate yourself against negative reviews can’t be a bad thing.
BONUS REASON:
You can start making friends by saying nice things about their books. When you release one, maybe they’ll pimp or review yours!
So there you have it. Five reasons to be on Goodreads, plus a bonus one. Got anymore reasons to share? Put them in the comments!
