Guest post: Jenn McRobbie

Jenn headshot

Today I have the pleasure of introducing Jenn McRobbie. A number of years ago (exactly how many I won’t disclose, LOL), Jenn and I were in the same attorney entering class at the large federal government agency that I still work for. We quickly became friends during our 8 weeks of in-classroom training, and soon joined the same law office. Back when Jenn and I were new attorneys together, writing was still new for me, but even then I knew I wanted to make a go of it. In fact, I’d left the Hi...

Consolation Day 2015

Silent PhoneA few days ago (March 26th,to be exact), calls went out to severaldozen very talented writers and authors in the romance community.I’m pretty sure this is not news to you.

That same day, hundredsof folks who had entered did not receive a call. I admit, I was one of those. Woe is me.Ifyou’re stopping by here today, I’m guessing you may have been one of those waiting by the phone, disappointed when it didn’t ring (or it rang, but it was a telemarketer or family member or someone else equally un...

Welcome 2015 Golden Heart and Rita Finalists!!!

champagne CONGRATULATIONS, FINALISTS!!!

Finalist call day is always a crazy, wild roller-coaster ride where nothing is certain until 2 p.m. Texas time. If your name made it onto the list of RWA finalists (see the full slate of 2015 nominees here), you accomplished something truly remarkable: you finished a manuscript, sent it out into the hands of strangers, and rocked the world of five judges. Hopefully you’re grabbing all the champagne and fudge truffles you can get your hands on–you deserve it!!!

No...

Show and Tell Wednesday: RITA & Golden Heart Edition

Hold all calls, tomorrow is RITA/GH Announcement day! This of course begs for a special edition of Show and Tell Wednesday.

Are you hoping for a nomination for one of these pretties?

gh-2009

Or perhaps a chance at one of these little ladies? (The statue, not Darynda!)

Announcement day is such an exciting time for us, since it was the day in 2009 when all of us came to know one another and the Ruby-Slippered Sisterhood began. On top of that, it’s a day where dreams come true. Whether you’re waiting...

Why YA?

Yesterday I celebrated a birthday that puts me ever further away from my books’ target audience: teens. (There’s a ‘two’ in my age, and let’s leave it at that, shall we? :) ) Despite this, I’m in no way ready to leave high school behind me. Nor am I quite ready to see Young Adult, the 2012 movie in which Charlize Theron plays a jaded, drunken teen fiction ghostwriter:

Even though I’ve been at it since I was about thirteen years old, I’m far from jaded when it comes to writing Young Adult ficti...

The Kill Shot

During the Winter Writing Festival I was in the chat room one night and we got to talking about our works in progress. While there, I mentioned that I hit a point in every single manuscript where I want to kill both my characters. Give ‘em both a big ‘ole Thelma and Louise over a cliff so I never have to think about either of them again.

While I recognize I will have a rather short shelf-life (or NO shelf-life) were this to become a reality, I find something cathartic going through this ritua...

Finding the Aha Moments

Last week, for about the twelfth time, I found myself befuddled up to my eyeballs over a romantic suspense work in progress. Whether you’re a panster, like myself, or a plotter, at some point you could find fresh ideas hiding in the deepest, darkness recesses of your mind amongst a pile of crappy overused ideas. When this happened to me in the past, I’d walked around for days mulling over my problem, my plot’s direction, which is perfectly fine, if you don’t have a deadline and or have time t...
