Show and Tell Wednesday: Merchandising!

What, you mean like action figures? Romance hero underoos?

Well, not quite. But author merchandising is definitely an up and coming….or an already here…thing that’s worth taking a look at, which is why I chose it as the topic of this week’s Show and Tell.

I always see Julie Kagawa tweeting about her Etsy store, KagawaCrafts, which apparently features unique artistic creations by the author herself, something she does for fun between writing mega-bestselling books. According to Julie on her Etsy...

What Was Your First Romance?

As readers, we have lots of memories of the books we read. Swoon-worthy heroes. Great kisses. Heroines we root for. We all have books we love and scenes that strike us in a particular way.

I was thinking about this recently when I was discussing favorite romance novels with a friend. I’ve been reading romance for over a quarter of a century but what I realized was that I actually have a hard time remembering what book was actually my first adult romance.

I have my first Harlequin – Night Into D...

Winter Writing Festival “Share a Snippet” Day!!!

We’re 17 days into the 2015 Winter Writing Festival, and participants have spun out hundreds of thousands of new words, whether in the rsswwf.com writing sprints or working on their own.

whatsyourstory-blogimgI love hearing folks in the Chat Room come back after 20 or 30 minutes of sprinting and say, “I wrote 673 new words!” or “I finished a chapter of my vampire slayer romance!”

All those wonderful words didn’t exist on paper before the Festival began, and now they’re HERE!!

Last year I got nosy and asked folks to p...

Show and Tell Wednesday: Posing Like a Woman (redux)

ICYMI (In case you missed it)

Can you believe I just figured out what that stands for? I had to Google it to find out too. Which is why I wrote it out here. PSA of the day.

In 2012, urban fantasy author Jim C. Hines did an awesomely awesome blog post featuring his exploration of the uncomfortable and often hip popping, spine-twisting impossible poses what women had on covers. What he found was that though these covers supposedly depicted strong women, in fact the poses were unnaturally contorte...

Collaboration: How NOT to Commit Murder

dreamstime_crow on gravestoneMany moons ago, a younger cousin requested help with his writing. He’s a marvelous storyteller, enjoys roll-playing games, and, like me, is a Ren Faire denizen, but his writing was what he calls organic—aka weak, wordy, and wandering, in need of industrial-strength honing. Since he’s more like a brother than a cousin, I agreed.

I had several advantages:

I am the elder. Cousin remembers the days he, along with my brothers, was put in my charge. Old habits die hard.

I have more experience. At the...

Winter Writing Festival Check in #2

Loud and proud, ladies! Loud and proud! This is the second Check-In Monday for the 2015 Winter Writing Festival, and I want you to put I MADE MY GOALS! at the top of your post.

I hope everybody can, but please put it up there only if you did make your goals. That might seem obvious, but I’ve been dealing with hubbie and children, and have discovered again how obvious to Mom isn’t necessarily obvious to everyone else. Or why my children call me Captain Obvious.

If you’ve made your goals this wee...

I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends

As I thought about what I wanted to write about today, I realized I had a ready-made story. I spent this past Monday with my critique partner, Allie Burton. Although we became critique partners when we both lived nearby, life and moves have conspired to put us 1,000 miles apart. So a visit this week was not only about being together but we had a lot of catching up to do!

We talked about everything – our writing, our lives, our families – and no matter the subject, we had that wonderful bond of...
