Demystifying HTML part 3 – tables
With HTML, one of the most fun and versatile features is the table. A table allows you to present all sorts of information in a structured way. Today’s post will demonstrate how to create simple HTML tables.
A quick recap of the Demystifying HTML series: The goal of this series to help you understand (and perhaps correct) HTML in web pages. Part 1 included HTML basics. Part 2 described how to display information in lists.
If you’ve ever used a spreadsheet application, you know th...

Stop the (Negative) Insanity!
Happy Monday everyone! Okay, so you may not feel like celebrating the start of the work week, but I bet you can find something to smile about if you look. Perhaps the traffic lights were green or a butterfly landed on your arm. These might seem like little things, but they’re important. Often times we dwell on the annoying things that go wrong, letting them eat away at our peace and daily joy. But wemust also pay attention to the little good things, whichpeople tend to forget aboutas soon as...

Brainstorming Unusual Character
Oops. The Ruby calendar had a few holes, so I thought we’d talk weather today. Not what it’s like in your area (however, you certainly can share), but how weather is used in our novels to trigger change in our characters’ lives. We know the well-worn cliché of the hero and heroine trapped in a cabin during a snow storm, but we don’t want to do cliché. We want to write fresh ideas
Did you see THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE? How about THE GRAPES OF WRATH? Those are two off the top of my head movies/...
Is Your Book Already Out There?
Do you ever notice when you’re working on a book that you think is brilliant (or when you just finished one and you’re about to start shopping it around) that all of a sudden you start seeing books exactly like yours everywhere you look? I know there is no such thing as a purely original idea (especially when your idea is Austen-based, as mine is, so it’s already derivative), but it can be a bit demoralizing to keep seeing evidence that someone else got there first.
I think when this happens...

Demystifying HTML – part 2 : Lists
In September, I posted the first article in a series to demystify HTML, which is the language we use to format web content. The goal of the series is to make it easier for you to read and (perhaps) correct the HTML you have in web pages.
A quick recap: Part 1 included terminology and 4 basic HTML “tags” (italics, bold, paragraphs, and line breaks). Tags generally come in pairs and change the way that the text or data is presented.
In this post, we’ll look at bulleted lists. There are two kin...

Accidental Hitchhiker: The Story Behind the Story
People often ask writers where we get our ideas. Mine come from anywhere and everywhere—a dream, a snippet of conversation overheard in a bar, a walk with my husband. After that initial burst of inspiration, I build on the idea. Expand and improve it as only a romance writer can, making it more. More exciting. More funny. More romantic.
My first published work was a short story in Woman’s World magazine. I’d decided to try my hand at short stories, and when I sat down to brainstorm, the first...
