Get to Know Your RWA PRO Liaison, Priscilla Oliveras!!

Since we’re in our annual season of welcoming Golden Heart Finalists, I wanted to ask another special guest to join us: Priscilla Oliveras, RWA’s wonderful Pro Liaison (not to mention four-time Golden Heart nominee and soon-to-be-published Kensington author!!)

Priscilla Oliveras headshot 1The PRO Liaison represents all those RWA members (like our Golden Heart nominees) who aren’t published quite yet, but are, as she says in her bio on the RWA site, “this close” to publishing.

Priscilla writes contemporary romance with a...

Happy Fangirl Friday!

Happy Friday 9

Yay! It’s the weekend! With it warming up, my thoughts start to drift toward sitting on the beach or by the lake or at the pool. And in all three daydreams I’m reading, of course. This week Ruby Sister, Kim Law, has three great beach reads (or lake/pool reads) on sale for $0.99 each! Check out her Turtle Island series below.

Turtle+Island+-+99cents

Blurb: Set off the gorgeous Georgia coast, Turtle Island is the perfect destination for fun in the sun—and for finding love when you least expect it. A delightfully li...

Archetypes and Storybeats Part II: The Virgin’s Promise

In last week’s blog I discussed the Hero’s journey and the nexus between certain character archetypes that are so well-recognized that they come ready-made with their own set of story beats. The Hero’s Journey as interpreted by Chris Vogler in his book on screenwriting (The Writer’s Journey), has been so widely read that it’s often offered up as the only pattern for stories.

But anyone who writes romance knows that the hero’s journey isn’t a good fit much of the time. It’s hard to see how Cin...

Prom – the Perfect Venue for Drama

Sr Prom

Heather at her Sr. Prom. A LONG time ago!

Do you remember prom? I attended three during my high school years in the 80’s. Big hair, voluminous shoulders, and Stairway to Heaven slow dancing. Now I’m all grown up (sort of) and have a darling daughter (DD) who went to prom this past weekend. Some things have changed while other prom rituals have stood the test of time.

For those writing YA, a prom is the perfect place for romance, frenemy drama, a wallflower make-over,...

Meet 2016 Golden Heart Finalist Tracey Amey!

Today we’re welcoming another Mermaid, Tracey Amey, a finalist in the Historical Romance category with MY LORD MERCENARY.

Tracey comes by her knowledge of Regency life honestly. Growing up, she spent many sunny afternoons in her Nan’s front parlor in the Regency town of Cheltenham, England. With her summer visits often came trips to the cities of Bath and London, and hence began her love affair with the elegance of the architecture, the spa rooms, and the fashions of the Regency period.

Now s...

Fangirl Friday the 13th!

Happy Fangirl Friday! ChChChAhAhAh…. Yes it is also Friday the 13th – eeks! We all better stay inside and read fabulous books instead of venturing into the woods. Actually my daughter is camping – at a lake – starting tonight! But it’s okay because she’s only 9, and as long as the dads chaperoningher “tribe” of Y-Princesses don’t tell Jason-Hockey-Mask stories, she should be just fine.

But for those of us who may have seen one or two of the twenty-some Friday the 13th movies, we best just sta...

Archetypes and Storybeats Part I: The Hero’s Journey

Human beings have been telling stories since the dawn of language. Some stories have been told so many times that their structure and main characters have been hardwired into the human consciousness.

A smart writer can use this to advantage. Knowing the most beloved characters and their story patterns, can be a huge time saver when you’re sitting down to brainstorm your latest novel. Today’s blog, and the blogs that will follow on the next three Thursdays, will explore the nexus between chara...
