Advanced Style

While I’m waiting to share prom pictures from my son’s big night, a friend of mine (the former best friend of my high school prom date, actually), hooked me up to this site:

Images of mature fashionistas. So fun, and inspiring! My favorite is Elizabeth Sweetheart, the artist who only wears green for the past seven years (she even dyes her underwear!). Personal style never gets old.

Last Good Book You Read

I am trying to read as many books in the month of June as I can.  I am finishing up Testimony by Anita Shreve this weekend.  A very good book.  It is opens with the headmaster of a private school in New England viewing a tape someone gave him of three of his star basketball players having sex with an underage girl.  You’d think that was bad enough, but there are more little plot twists.  And her style of writing is very smooth and fast-paced.  If you’ve never read Anita Shreve, I highly recommen

Kidnapping in Broad Daylight!

Now if you heard someone staged their own kidnapping and later was found vacationing at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, you might think it was me. I’ve threatened to run away to Disney World many times, maybe once a week, and the Grand Floridian is my favorite resort.

But it wasn’t me! It was Bonnie Sweeten, age 38, of Bucks County, PA. She claimed she was kidnapped at the scene of a car accident with her daughter Julia, thrown in the trunk of a car, and driven away to who knew where. The F

Commercials

I’m not one to fall for the viral marketing, but this one really gets me. A little subliminal imagery?

If you know what KC was twittering about this morning, you’ll understand what made me think of it. Do you think they would make that kind of commercial if it was an issue for men? What, and we don’t want them to practice good grooming? Fair’s fair. Do you have a favorite new commercial? Or one that drives you crazy?

It’s a Big Day!

Here we go - the start of summer!  OK, so officially we have to wait a few more weeks, but we all know that summer starts on Memorial Day, so let’s celebrate!  Breakout the lemonade.  Fire up the barbeque.  Find those flip-flops.  And grab a good book to read under an umbrella.  Julia London’s got a new one out that would be perfect.

And there is more going on than just the change of season.  It’s a whole new world at Sherri’s house - at least for one young man, who turns . . . um, can you gue

Memorial Day

I’m not usually overly sentimental about national holidays, but I recently heard about the death of the older brother of a high school friend.  Dave was 19 when he was drafted for Vietnam.  His father had been a WWII hero, so off Dave went to war, thinking he would be John Wayne, and finding a very different reality.  His girlfriend waited for him, through all three tours of Vietnam.  When he finally came home for good, decades older mentally, scarred, and without one leg, they started a family

Yes, It’s True

Since yesterday’s post, I’ve gotten some mail asking if it’s really true that I would consider naming a character after someone, or have I ever actually named a character after someone I know, or someone I don’t like. But of course, darlings! What fun it is! The Whine Sisters all do it. Sometimes, though, we change names in a way that only we know to whom we refer. Or maybe someone who hurts a dear friend of mine becomes a villain in my next book, or gets killed off in a gruesome fashion, who k

So, You Want to Write?

If you’re an aspiring writer, you might consider following blogs of your favorite writers (like us, not that we normally include a lot of relevant information, but we love to amuse you and pass the time), of editors, and of agents. You could pick up some useful tips. Like, what writers should and shouldn’t do at conferences, what agents look for in a submission, which editors really can’t stand to see another vampire hero… You know, helpful stuff like that.

I like Janet Reid’s blog (http://jetr

Something Good to Watch For a Change

Now that almost every series on TV is winding down to the last show, it’s time to find something else good to watch.  I’ve got two great suggestions, both on HBO, The first, which aired for the first time last month, is “Grey Gardens”, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, who are superb in this re-telling of the story of the decline into poverty and madness of Jackie Kennedy’s aunt and cousin.  If these two women do not get every award available, it will be a crime.  They were riveting

2009 Jean Update

It’s that time of year again when I go looking for a new pair of jeans.  I am happy to report that many brands now have a cut that comes up above the pubic bone—good news for all women over the age of 15!

This year, I opted for Not Your Daughter’s Jeans.  I have had these before--you all know them, right?  They have tummy control for women with curves, like those fatties in the picture.  I like that idea, and I like that NYDJ are long, as length is always a problem for me.  But what I have not
