I’m here to tell you about another old book I found with some hidden treasures inside. This is The Luck of Roaring Camp by Bret Harte.

I actually found this book in Payson, Arizona at a shop called Barn Door Books. The Luck of Roaring Camp is a story of gold-prospecting camp just eastof Sacramento in the 1800s. One night a baby boy is born to Cherokee Sal. As the story says, “Perhaps the less said of her the better. She was a coarse, and, it is to be feared, a very sinful woman.”

Breaking out the pearls and tiaras

Coming out with your first book can be a scary and surreal time. Each day, I swing between thrilled and terrified at least 1400 times. Let’s just say my husband is a saint, and my dogs and cats are better than prozac. A few days ago, I found out I’m not alone in my dance […]

The secret sketchbook of Betty Valentine

When I first go to a used bookstore, the first thing I do is find the oldest, gnarliest, most forgotten books I can find. And I open them up and look inside. Sometimes I find something unexpected. Burke’s Speech on Conciliation with America is not something I would normally pick up. But when I looked […]

Hugo’s Cookbook: I-ate-too-much-last-night kale smoothie

About Hugo’s Cookbook Is there anything better than a simple dinner with friends? The Moroccan sand dabs with curry hollandaise sauce, the Chilean macaroni salad with papaya, the Thai coconut-encrusted pot roast. You know, the usual sort of thing. But on such evenings, it’s easy to get caught up in the good food and even better […]

The book club of my dreams (and nightmares)

I started my first book club in 1991. I had a group of book nerd friends, and I’d heard about this new thing called a book club where we read the same book and got together to talk about it. Inside me, a mile long “Squeeeee!” unleashed itself. OK, I was a lot younger then and […]

A few questions about The Moment of Everything

The awesome Ann Gelder asked me to be a part of a blog hop. So here’s my answer to a set of questions about my novel. 1. What is the name of your character? Is s/he fictional or a historic person? The Moment of Everything is written in the first person from the perspective of […]
