Easy Weeknight Dinner: My Three Can Pasta
At long last, here it is! The recipe intended to share with you two weeks ago (and then one week ago) before the wheels unexpectedly came off the bus of my life. Once, then I borrowed another car and the wheels fell off of that too. But I’ve probably belabored that metaphor so let’s move on.
By the way, I am thrilled and relieved to report that the wheels are, once again, going round and round and my life is a little more settled now. It’s lovely to be tucked up in my office with my coffee at hand and my dog at my feet, getting back to work. However, with all the drama of multiple family crises, cancelled contracts, cancelled flights, lost luggage, and busted cell phones, I have a LOT of catching up to do.
Which means this is the perfect week to make Three Can Pasta.
This flavor-packed, incredibly delicious, and easy-as-pie recipe is one that my sister has been making for years. She shared it with me over the summer and it quickly became my go-to recipe. It’s great for those days when you want to make a great meal in record time which makes it a perfect weeknight dinner.
Three Can Pasta is that rarest of animals – a “fast-food” recipe that tastes like you slaved over a hot stove all day and is actually pretty darned healthy! (If you’re watching your weight, I suggest using only half the amount of olives.) Loaded with a carnival of colorful, flavorful vegetables and topped with tangy, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, this is a dinner that will make you and your guests groan with happiness.
I’ve served it to company twice so far and gotten so many compliments and recipe requests. I have to admit, I was almost reluctant to share because I didn’t want everybody to know how easy it is.
But, I did. First with my guests and now with you. Because sharing a good thing is always a good thing, right?
Easy Weeknight Dinners: A Life Hack
Really, there is just SO much to love about this recipe! It’s easy, delicious, and fairly healthy. But even more importantly, most of the ingredients are pulled right out of the pantry. That means you can keep the makings on hand and pull it together quickly for unexpected guests or days when you’re too slammed to get to the grocery store.

The fact that the “as is” version of Three Can Pasta is vegetarian is another mark in its favor. Many of my friends and family members are vegetarians, so I’m thrilled to have something this yummy to serve them on short notice. And like a lot of people, I’m trying to eat less animal protein these days. Three Can Pasta is a winner for anybody looking for a good “Meatless Monday” dish.
But if you or your guests are committed carnivores, slicing up a package of Italian sausage will satisfy the meat-lovers in your life. I use Aidell’s Italian Style Chicken Sausage with this dish and it’s terrific, but I’m sure any Italian style sausage. Just slice the sausages on the diagonal, toss them in at the end, and you’re good to go.
Another plus about this recipe is that it tastes great the next day. The portions are generous, so if you’re only feeding a few people there should be some yummy leftovers for lunch the next day. But if you’re feeding a crowd and you have big enough cooking pots, you might want to double the recipe. People tend to eat a lot of this dish!
In case you hadn’t already guessed, Three Can Pasta has quickly become one of my favorite recipes. Give it a try this week. I bet it will become one of your favorites too.

Three Can Pasta
Author: Marie Bostwick

Ingredients
22 oz. can diced tomatoes with basil, garlic, and oregano
14 oz. can artichokes quarters, drained
6 oz can pitted large whole black olives, drained and sliced in half
1 large onion, medium diced
1 sweet red pepper, medium diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 T Extra Virgin Olive Oil
6 oz. freshly grated Parmesan cheese (preferably Parmigiano Reggiano)
9 oz. dry spaghetti
Fresh basil, chopped in chiffonade (optional)
Instructions
Fill a large pot with water and pinch of salt. Bring to boil.
While waiting for water to boil, place olive oil in large saucepan on stove over medium-high heat. Add onions and peppers and sauté until onion are translucent and soft, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic to pan, sauté for another minute or so.
Add spaghetti to boiling water and cook according to package directions, usually 9 to 11 minutes.
While spaghetti is cooking, add canned tomatoes, quartered artichokes, and whole olives sliced in half to the saucepan with cooked onion and peppers. Lower heat to medium-low and cook until pasta is ready, giving flavors a chance to meld.
Drain spaghetti and place in large bowl. Pour pan of cooked vegetables over top. Add grated cheese to dish and toss to mix spaghetti, vegetables, and cheese. Garnish with chopped basil, if using, and serve immediately.

Financial Planning Checklist for the End of the Year
I’m thrilled to welcome back my fierce friend, Peggy Doviak, to share her wisdom on end of year financial planning tasks to set us up for success next year.
Peggy is the author of 52 Weeks to Prosperity along with other blogs posts you can find on Fierce Beyond 50 like: paying for college , advice about prosperity vs. money , setting financial goals , saving for retirement and curbing your holiday spending . She has a wealth of advice and we’re all better served by having a professional like Peggy in our corner!
Your Financial Planning Checklist for the End of the Year
It seems incredible that the holiday season is less than a month away! Once we reach Thanksgiving, free time vanishes until January. But right now, the back-to-school rush has passed, and we still have a little time before we defrost the turkey. Take advantage of the lull and finish up some important end-of-year financial planning tasks.
Step 1: Requirement Minimum Distributions
First, don’t forget to take your 2019 required minimum distributions, also called RMDs. If you are 70 ½ and have a traditional Individual Retirement Account, you must begin to take mandatory withdrawals. Up until now, the IRS has allowed you to defer taxes on at least the investment growth and possibly the money used to fund the account. Now, it’s time to begin to pay the tax liability. Fortunately, your required withdrawal is likely not as much as you expect. However, if you don’t follow the rules, you will pay a penalty of 50% of the amount you were supposed to take. That’s an expensive mistake!
If you want to postpone paying your taxes just a little longer, the IRS gives you a one-time option of deferring your first distribution until April 1st of the next year. Just remember you will also need to take a second withdrawal before December 31st as well. Unfortunately, there are a few more wrinkles. If you have a Roth IRA, you don’t need to take RMDs during your lifetime. Further, if you are still working after age 70 ½, you don’t have to take a distribution on a 401(k), 403(b), or other qualified account until you retire. This exception assumes you aren’t the business owner. However, postponing your distribution isn’t possible if you own a SEP or SIMPLE plan. Because these are based on IRAs, you must take distributions at 70 ½ even if you are still working.
Lastly, if you inherit an IRA, you also must take required minimum distributions. These begin by December 31stof the year after the year the person died. The delay allows most estate issues to be settled before money must be withdrawn. The RMD calculation of an inherited IRA is a little different than if the account had been your own. I recommend talking to a CPA or CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTMpractitioner to help with this computation as well as all the other details around your required minimum distributions.
Step 2: Max Out Those Tax Deductions
Next, let’s move on to maximizing your tax deductions before the end of the year. Begin by looking at your charitable contributions. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act didn’t actually eliminate your ability to deduct donations. However, the amount of the standard deduction is now so high that most people can’t exceed it. Still, check your records. If you can itemize your deductions in 2019, it might make sense to donate extra to charity this year if you anticipate not being able to itemize next year. That way, you receive a maximum tax benefit, and you help the causes you love.
Step 3: Take a Look at your Medical Expenses
You should also review your medical expenses. Remember that to be deductible, your bills need to be higher than 10% of your adjusted gross income, up from last year’s 7.5%. If you’re close to the deductible level, you might consider requesting appointments or paying extra medical costs, like new glasses or hearing aids, this year.
Step 4: Fund that 401k
Finally, although you can fund an Individual Retirement Account by April 15thand count it towards the previous year, you can’t do that with your company’s retirement plan. As a result, be sure you have funded your 401(k) or other plan as fully as possible by the end of the year. Remember that different kinds of plans have different contribution amounts with varying catch-up rules for older employees. Talk to your company’s human resources department to be sure you understand all of your available options.
You can do it!
Completing all of these tasks will help you end 2019 on a high note. However, I have one last piece of advice. Don’t let the holidays make you crazy. Keep your stress level low, and spend time doing things that you and your loved ones find meaningful. Review your cash flow, and don’t spend more money than you can afford. Starting 2020 without bills from the past holiday season is your first step toward a happy, prosperous New Year.

Children’s Books My Grandkids Love
It’s no secret that I love reading. It’s also no secret that I absolutely adore my grand-darlings. All six of them. While I don’t get to see them as often as I would like, I always enjoy walking in the door and being (lovingly) attacked by hugs, cries of “Grammy!” and snuggles.
There are so many activities I love doing with them – we make homemade slime, we’ve made homemade ravioli, sometimes I send them Grammy’s Craft of the Month Club when I’ll be away for a while – but my favorite thing is reading with those children. It develops the strongest bonds for us. Even at their different stages, they all love curling up in my lap and diving into a story together.
Why Reading to Your Grandchildren (Or Your Kids!) is so Important
I’m probably fairly loud about my belief that my grand-darlings are very advanced for their ages. Of course, I may be a teeny bit biased but I’m also sure I’m exactly right. But really, they are so stinking smart (sometimes, too much for their own good). Both sets of parents enjoy reading with their littles and I’m so very proud of them for taking the time. Especially in a world of screen time overload and chronic busyness, it’s so precious to see families reading together. Someone told me not too long ago that there’s no app to replace your lap and you better believe I shared it with my boys and their families about five seconds later.
And it’s not just me who says reading is important! Here’s Exhibit A. (It’s actually the only Exhibit I need.) As this infographic shows, children that read 20 minutes each day will know 1.8 million words by the time they hit 6th grade. That is bananas! I’m not sure I know that many words.
It’s not just vocabulary that concerns me. It’s the ability to use their imaginations and learn about empathy between the pages. Reading helps children learn about different cultures, and views, and people, and worlds. It’s about one day being able to read all of Grammy’s books and maybe telling their closest 1,000 friends to buy a copy. (Ok, ok, just kidding on that last part.)
Best Children’s Books for your Grand-darlings (Or Your Own Little Ones!)
Now is the time of year when grandmothers start thinking about those Christmas gifts for their grand-darlings. Well, I’ve done some of the groundwork for you. Without a doubt, books are the very best gift you can give. I’ve picked out a few of the best ones right now. Of course, you can’t go wrong with the classics, but recent titles can also become bookshelf mainstays. Here are 10 great reads that my grandkids and I love right now.
You Stole My Name
“You stole my name,” said the chicken to the chickenhawk, cat to the catfish, bull to the bulltrout and so on. How and why did some animals get named after other animals? Can you figure out why? Does it makes any sense? How many more can you think of?
Dragons Love Tacos
Dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You’re in red-hot trouble.
Who Am I ?
Jeffrey Turner, a dear friend and the author and illustrator of the witty and wonderful Who Broke the Vase?, returns with a story about a rabbit who believes he can be anything he imagines. But when he meets a bat hanging upside down from a tree, he finds out he’s not the only one who thinks that way!
Ada Twist Scientist
Inspired by real-life makers Ada Lovelace and Marie Curie, this beloved #1 bestseller champions STEM, girl power and women scientists in a rollicking celebration of curiosity, the power perseverance, and the importance of asking “Why?”
What Do You Do with an Idea?
This is the story of one brilliant idea and the child who helps to bring it into the world. As the child’s confidence grows, so does the idea itself. And then, one day, something amazing happens. This is a story for anyone, at any age, who’s ever had an idea that seemed a little too big, too odd, too difficult. It’s a story to inspire you to welcome that idea, to give it some space to grow, and to see what happens next. Because your idea isn’t going anywhere. In fact, it’s just getting started.
There’s a Dinosaur on the 13th Floor
The outcome is anything but predictable when an exhausted hotel guest sets out in search of sleep in this kid-pleasing romp full of visual humor.
The Bad Mood and the Stick
New York Times bestselling author Lemony Snicket sheds light on the way bad moods come and go.
Ode to an Onion
A poetic, beautifully illustrated picture book inspired by Ode to the Onion by Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904–1973). Pablo has a lunch date with his friend Matilde, who shows the moody poet her garden. Where Pablo sees conflict and sadness, Matilde sees love and hope. The story is less a biography of Neruda and his muse, Matilde Urrutia (1912–1985), and more a simple ode to a vegetable that is humble and luminous, dark and light, gloomy and glad, full of grief and full of joy—just like life.
A Sick Day for Amos McGee
Friends come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. In Amos McGee’s case, all sorts of species, too! Every day he spends a little bit of time with each of his friends at the zoo, running races with the tortoise, keeping the shy penguin company, and even reading bedtime stories to the owl. But when Amos is too sick to make it to the zoo, his animal friends decide it’s time they returned the favor.
Mary Wears What She Wants
From the award-winning creator of My Dad Used to Be So Cool and Tough Guys Have Feelings Too comes a charming picture book inspired by the true story of Mary Edwards Walker, a trailblazing 19th-century doctor who was arrested many times for wearing pants.
Read to your Grand-darlings!
No matter the book you choose, the point is that you get to spend time with them and watch their eyes light up as they gaze at the pages. Sure, you’re making them smarter and everything, but you are making memories and showing them how much you love them. And that’s just as important, if you ask me.

Fall Fashion 2019: Must-Haves for a Fierce Closet
Every year, when the leaves start to show their colors and the temperatures dip (or plummet), there is a ceremonious changing of the guard at my house. Summer flavors are replaced by savory comfort food, pumpkin spice lattes rule the world once again, and my wardrobe is cleaned out (Praise the Lord for Marie Kondo) and spruced up. I certainly don’t buy a new wardrobe every season, but I take inventory of what I have, what works well together, what fits, what doesn’t.
I replace, repair, and give away what I’m not wearing anymore. It’s a ritual that I hold fast; for a couple of weeks, my closet is pristine as a couture showroom and my drawers are all origami-folded like artwork in a museum.
My general operating procedure for this process is 1) if I haven’t worn it in a year, give it away, 2) if it doesn’t fit anymore, give it away (I reached my goal weight not too long ago so this is a good problem to have!), 3) if it needs a little TLC, send it to the tailor or repair it, and 4) if it doesn’t spark joy, as Marie Kondo says, thank the clothing item for its service to you and send it on its way.
Why is it important to get rid of things? It’s like a detox – you feel great afterwards. Plus, if you’re anything like me, my closet isn’t the size of an ancient labyrinth and I run into space issues ever so often. It’s hard to cram more in after shopping if you haven’t cleaned the closet out first.
So, take this as a friendly reminder to clean out your closet!
And now, for the good stuff. Here are the fall fashion 2019 trends that I am loving!
Fall Fashion 2019: What to Wear Right Now
In Central Oregon, sweater weather is in full swing – with a parka on top and warm winter boots. Basically, it’s freezing. My focus this year was making sure I have some comfy, warm basics that I can throw on in the morning and wear while I walk Showgirl around the block, get my work done, and meet girlfriends for lunch.
I like to go with high quality and timeless, mixing in fun new colors and textures.
Buffalo Check
Oh, how I love a good, classic buffalo check. I even used a pretty taupe and cream buffalo check for our dining nook at our new home and I found these adorable check pajamas for my grandkids in a similar pattern! It’s fun and bold without being too loud. This season, it seems to be springing up everywhere! Here are a few of my favorite looks to incorporate it.
Sweaters to Match the Autumn Leaves
Did you ever “get your colors done” when you were younger? You know, someone sits down with you, stares at your face like they’re reading your soul, pensively holds up colored paper to your face, and then tells you what to wear? (If you haven’t, you are really missing out). Even if you haven’t had your colors “professionally” done, most of us probably know by now what colors complement our coloring and which ones make us look pale or washed out. My colors are true to my heritage; a Scotch-Irish twist of (almost) porcelain skin and auburn hair. When I told my daughter in love that my best colors were a pumpkin spice rainbow of curry, copper, saffron, nutmeg, and cinnamon stick, she quickly pointed out that no, those colors aren’t for everyone. My daughter in love has about the opposite coloring as I do, with olive skin, blond hair and blue eyes. The pumpkin spice palette does not, in fact, make her colors “pop.” My point is, find the autumn hue that works for you!
Here are a few cozy, oversized sweaters with colors to match the leaves.
Leggings to go over those long sweaters
I know what you’re thinking. Leggings? Are you serious, Marie?
Let me back up a moment. Leggings as pants are probably a sin; leggings as layers are actually fashion miracles. Wondering what the distinction is? If you choose to wear a short top with leggings, all anyone will notice is that your derriere is on prominent display, for better or for worse. This isn’t my favorite look, to put it politely. But, layer leggings with a flowy, long tunic or an oversized sweater and you’ve got a great, comfortable look that is good for all ages.
Another great thing about leggings? They come in high waisted, control top, and all sorts of fun patterns designed for slimming effects. Spanx – yes, the shaping undergarment company that holds in the jiggles and the rolls – has their own line of super flattering leggings and let me tell you, they are amazing.
Here are a few pairs that would look great with those sweaters I mentioned earlier.
Fierce Boots
This one is slightly more utilitarian than most; I need a boot that keeps my feet warm and dry. I’m trying to be very outdoorsy, because that is the way of life in Central Oregon, but it can just get so dreadfully cold. These boots all fit the bill, plus, they are oh so fierce.
Mini-Bags
I always think that ladies with small purses must really be organized. My purse, on the other hand, typically lands somewhere on the spectrum of army duffel bag and weekender bag. I want my latest crafts, at least three books, my laptop, an assortment of lipsticks, snacks and refreshments with me at all times. But where do I think I’m going that I need all of these things? I’m not about to endure a several-hour international layover; I’m simply going to grab coffee or pick up groceries. That’s what’s so great about the mini-bag trend. You have to decide what matters most and your back will probably be thanking you. Here are a few adorable options.

Baby Quilt Made With Love, With An Iron I Love Just As Much
I am a big believer in the importance that creativity plays in crafting a happy, meaningful, and fierce life. In my opinion, creative expression ranks very high on the list of human necessity, not very far after air, water, food, and shelter.
When I’m talking about creative expression, I mean creating something original, something that comes from your own brain and heart and soul. When it comes to crafting, I consider originality the ideal.
But sometimes the ideal is out of reach. Sometimes life simply bowls you over with a whole avalanche of crazy you never saw coming. Forget originality, you’re just fighting your way to the top of the mess and so you can breathe! That’s where I’ve been for the last few weeks, tumbling along with the avalanche and feeling overwhelmed.
In my experience, crafting and prayer are the world’s best antidotes to overwhelm, especially when done simultaneously. This weekend, I really, really, really needed both. And so, in spite of the avalanche, I put a fence around a few hours of my Saturday and hustled myself up to my crafting studio to clear my head and settle my soul.
Sometimes You Just Need To Sew
Much as I love making my own patterns, I simply didn’t have the mental bandwidth to come up with an original design this weekend. Instead, I dug into my stash and pulled out a nifty little product I keep on hand for occasions like this – a Pods Precut Quilt Kit from Maywood Studio.
I love Pods Precuts because they come in lots of beautiful colors and patterns, have everything I need to finish the quilt top, including binding fabric and clear pattern instructions, and are accurately cut so they’re ready to stitch. They’re perfect for those moments when you just need to sew, not think. Something else I like about pods is their flexibility. If you want to make a baby quilt or table runner, you just need one pod. If you want to make a lap, full, queen, or even king-sized quilt, you just add more pods until you have enough for the size you need.
A family friend just had a baby girl, so I pulled a pretty, feminine pink and black floral Pod Precut from my stash and got to sewing a log cabin baby quilt. Because I bought these Pods some time ago, you might not be able to find this exact fabric. However, there are lots of lovely Pod Precut collections available that almost anyone can sew into a beautiful quilt (whether a baby quilt or otherwise.)
Here are a few specific options I love:
[image error] [image error] [image error]
Everybody Loves A Log Cabin
The log cabin is a great block and a classic choice for beginners. That’s why I chose a log cabin quilt as a first project for Ivy Peterman, one of the main characters in A Thread of Truth which I wrote way back in 2009!
Though I’ve been quilting for about 35 years, log cabin quilts continue to be among my favorites. They are pretty to look at, easy to make, and very satisfying to sew. If you’ve never made a quilt before, a log cabin quilt is an excellent place to start. If you use a Pod Precut, you’re practically guaranteed a good result. The cutting has already been done for you and the stitching is all straight lines – easy peasy!
[image error] [image error] [image error]
A Quilt For Anyone – Beginners Or Experts
When you open the Pod Precut, you’ll find a set of instructions, a larger piece of fabric that you can use for binding the quilt, and precut patches for every block. I like to lay the patches out so I can see exactly what comes next before I start sewing.
Log cabin blocks start with two squares, sewn along one edge with the right sides of the fabric facing together. (In quilting, we always use a ¼ inch seam and press the seam to one side, usually the darker side, with a hot iron after we finish sewing.) After sewing the seam and pressing the block open, you’ll have a rectangle.
Once you’ve sewn the first rectangle and are sure you’ve done it correctly with a good quarter inch seam, sew all the rest at the same time, assembly-line style. This is called “chain-piecing”. It will save you a ton of time!
For this baby quilt, the black square will be the center of the block. Making sure the black square is on the same side each time, sew a light-colored rectangle along the long edge of the light/dark rectangle. Press that block open. You’ll now have a square!
Practice Makes Perfect (And Quilts)
(Pretty cool, right? I’ve been quilting for a gazillion years but I still get excited whenever I press a block and see how my pretty patches have come together.)
I’m not going to try to go through step-by-step instructions here, the pattern included with your Pod Precuts will do that. I just wanted to give you an idea of how easy and fun it can be to make this quilt. Basically, you keep sewing rectangle patches around the sides of the square until the block is done, then sew the blocks together.
Another option is to do what I did and use the large piece of fabric to create a border instead of using it for binding. One Pod Precut kit makes a baby quilt that is 29” x 39” but I wanted mine to be just a little bit larger. Adding a 3’ inch unfinished border on each side increased the side to 34” x 44” – a generous but not too big baby quilt. I’m going to bind it with some pretty pink fabric I already had on hand.
Even if you’ve never quilted before, anyone with basic sewing skills should be able to a Pod Precut baby quilt top in about 4 hours. An experienced quilter can probably finish it in 3 hours or less. It’s that simple. However, every project is made better (and more enjoyable) if you have the right tools.
An Iron For The Job
Apart from a sewing machine and scissors, a good iron is probably the most important tool in a quilter’s arsenal. The wrong iron can make a quilter cry and tempt her to say bad words. The right iron can make quilting a joy and give your quilts a precise, polished finish.
So you can imagine how excited I was when the Oliso Company sent me one of their Smart Irons as well as a Mini-Iron to try for myself. Having test-driven both irons for a couple of projects, I can tell you that these nifty irons fall squarely into the joy-enhancing category.
(Disclaimer: I was given this product in exchange for a fair and honest review. This Oliso Smart iron review reflects my honest, personal opinions and experiences.)
Oliso Mini-Iron
I recently used the Oliso Mini-Iron on a Hawaiian Ti Leaf wall hanging. This project had lots of little fiddley seams and each had to be pressed before the next seam could be sewn.
Having the Mini-Iron sitting at the sewing machine and ironing on a pressing mat saved me lots of getting up and down. It was a perfect tool for this project. Since it’s so small (not a much bigger than my hand) and very lightweight; this would also be an ideal take-along iron when you go to a quilt retreat or class.
In spite of it’s miniature size, this mini-iron gives a powerful burst of steam in both the horizontal or vertical position. (I am thinking it would be a neat travel iron for garments too, good for steaming out wrinkles when I’m on the road). The reservoir was big enough that I was able to use it for quite a while before refilling. It has a full 8-foot cord that swivels; a welcome, useful and somewhat surprising feature in such a small iron. I also like the way it fits in my hand and how neatly it fits onto the “Solemate” silicone base. There was no fear of scorching my fabric or accidentally burning myself.
The only thing I didn’t love about the Oliso Mini-Iron is that the handle got a little bit hotter than I might have liked. But that wasn’t enough to make ironing with it uncomfortable and it certainly wouldn’t be enough to prevent me from giving it my enthusiastic recommendation. If you’re in the market for a small project iron, I don’t think you can do better than an Oliso Mini-Iron.
Good news! Oliso has kindly supplied me with TWO of these nifty little Mini-Irons to giveaway to two of my Fierce Friends! Click here to enter the giveaway but do so right away, as the winners will be chosen on Monday, October 21st. Good luck!
Oliso Smart Iron Review – If Only I’d Had It Years Ago
True Story.
Six or seven years ago, I was sitting on the floor and ironing a quilt. Don’t ask me why but I was.
The phone rang. I got up to answer it and stupidly left my iron laying plate down on the carpet.
Well, you can guess what happened. That’s right; a great big iron-shaped burn mark on my carpeting. Fortunately, my husband was out of town and I found a carpet remnant in the basement. Our handyman patched up the carpet and I moved a potted plant over the patch. My husband didn’t know what happened until we moved.
Now, I’m sure that none of my fierce friends would be so foolish as to leave an iron on the rug. But mistakes DO happen and that’s one of the biggest reasons I love my new Oliso Smart Iron. The patented iTouch technology puts an end to accidental scorching!
Here’s how it works…
Unlike most irons, the Oliso Smart Iron is always left with the plate down (this took me a little time to get used to). When you touch the handle, the iron automatically lowers to the fabric. When you let the handle go, it automatically lifts up, away from the fabric. So even if you go off to answer the phone and forget about the iron, there will be NO scorching. Nada!
Iron Clad Features
And that’s really just the start of the Smart Iron’s very smart features.
I loved the side fill feature with the built-in “funnel” design that meant no spills during filling. It’s a small feature but one of those little conveniences that makes you wonder why somebody hadn’t thought of this before. The tank is generously sized, which means less filling and more time quilting. I also like that it uses plain old tap water, not distilled. Few things are quite as frustrating as getting ready to quilt but realizing you can’t because you forgot to buy more distilled water. And though this might seem a little silly, I really loved the bright pink color! (Hey, I’m a quilter. Color makes me happy.)
But, of course, what really matters when you’re ironing is the steam. The steam on my new Oliso is as powerful and steady as any iron I’ve ever used. And with seven different steam settings, I’m able to find just the right one for whatever type of sewing I’m doing on any kind of fabric, from delicate silk dupioni to heavy wool.
In short, I’m thrilled with my new Oliso Smart Iron and impressed by its features.
Retailing at $169.00 for a Quilters and Sewers model isn’t cheap but the price of an Oliso Smart Iron isn’t out of line with other specialty sewing irons. I’ve paid as much as that for irons I’ve liked much less in the past. And since an excellent iron is such an important tool for quilting, I think an Oliso Smart Iron is definitely a worthwhile investment. I love mine.
But, of course, one of the best investments you can make in pursuit of a happy, fulfilling, fiercely-lived life is time spent doing things you love. Whether it be quilt, painting, coloring, singing, gardening, or cooking – your unique brand of creative expression is a gift to yourself, and the world.

Fall Charcuterie Board Ideas for Your Autumn Gatherings
A very fierce, red-headed girl once said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” That girl was Anne of Green Gables and that girl was right on the money.
I’d like to build upon her wisdom, if I may. Here’s another true statement, “I’m so glad I live in a world with charcuterie boards.”
There, I said it. Charcuterie boards are amazing entertaining tools. They have transformed my interest and ability to have friends over last minute and to actually enjoy my own parties instead of working myself to the bone.
I’m also, like Anne, a huge fan of Octobers. I’ve jumped head first into Fall food like pumpkin spice everything and the perfect fall salad. I’ve also upped my Fall crafting game with candy corn coasters, pinecone decorations for my front door, and the prettiest blue and white porcelain pumpkin decor you’ve ever seen.
Enough gushing. Let’s talk boards.
Why Charcuterie Boards have Changed my Life
They are easy. Use what you have on hand, maybe cook one thing for a little something extra.
They are cost-effective. I don’t have to fund a whole 10-course dinner for my friends.
They are crowd friendly. There is something for everyone here, even the pickiest eaters.
They are so stinking pretty. The arranging of the board is half the fun!
They are basically self-care on a board. Here are a few things that truly feed my soul: delicious food, a glass of wine, and gatherings with friends. Boards are basically all of these things beautifully wrapped up into one soul-satisfying extravaganza.
If you want to learn how to make a great board with all of the essential elements, check out my charcuterie board 101 post. You can thank me later.
Here are four Fall charcuterie board ideas that will blow everyone’s socks off at your next party.
Halloween Charcuterie Board
Let’s talk about what’s going on here. It’s a lot to take in when it comes to this level of seasonal charcuterie mastery. I’ve created a checklist to make this easier:
Peeled clementines with rosemary sprigs to look like pumpkins
Herbed Marcona Almonds from Trader Joes
Kettle Corn popcorn
Potato chips shaped like ghosts (genius)
White pumpkins (oh my goodness, so cute!)
Usual suspects like cheddar cubes, salami, mustard, and crackers
Apple slices with candy apple dip
And get this, there’s a sneaky trick to get those apples to stay bright white. No, not lemon juice. It’s a salt water brine and it actually works! Read the tutorial on salt-brining apples before your next board adventure.
Kid-friendly Charcuterie Board
Who says charcuterie boards are just for fancy grownups with fancy wine? This kid-friendly option includes things that are familiar and attractive to your littlest guests: frosted animal crackers, goldfish, mini PB & Js, pretzels and ants on a log. I’ll be making one of these the next time my grand-darlings come to visit.
A Very French Board
I feel like someone in my life at some point should have told me about the flavor pairing of crunchy radishes and butter with herbs and flakey salt. It’s MAGIC. How am I just learning about this in my fifties? Looks like I’ll have to have a few extra helpings to make up for it.
If you are wanting to experience the magic for yourself, head on over to Ina Garten’s recipe for radishes with herbed butter. Just spread some of the whipped herb butter on a toasted baguette, top with thinly sliced radishes, and sprinkle with flakey sea salt. You won’t be disappointed when you include it in your Fall charcuterie board.
A Very Cheesy Board
So you know how I said that sometimes you can cook or or two things for your charcuterie board to make it extra special? For this board, I included stuffed sweet peppers with goat cheese and herbs, plus a baked fontina recipe from Ina Garten. The adorable skillet with cheese just screams cool weather and the peppers (I promise they are not spicy) bring a vibrant punch of color that reminds me of the hues of the changing leaves.
Make Your Own Fall Charcuterie Board
The important things to remember when making a Fall charcuterie board are 1) choose something you and your guests will love, 2) incorporate seasonal decor or ingredients, and 3) have fun with it!
You can do it!

Fall Craft Ideas: Easy, Fun Ideas for your Home
If you’ve been around here long, you’ll know that I love all things fall. And all things arts and crafts. That’s why this post on Fall Craft Ideas is basically my theme song.
I make it a point to bless my home with the appropriate autumnal decor. I’m not talking a total redo of my decorations, but before I get the actual holiday decorations out, I make time to really soak in those Fall hues of crimson, gold, and auburn.
While my husband might not completely understand this, why would I approach a new season without the appropriate sense of decorum? To help him understand, I always make sure he knows that I make my own seasonal swag. Between you and me, the do-it-yourself route can actually be more expensive than just buying something from the store, but where’s the fun in that?
Little accents throughout your home help set the mood for the new season. Plus, they’re pretty.
My Favorite Fall Craft Ideas
To spare you the rabbit hole of perusing Pinterest for hours on end (because we have better things to do, right?), I went ahead and found the absolutely most adorable things to make for your fall decorations.
Let’s start with a few of my Fall craft ideas, shall we?
Pine Cone Swag For Your Front Door
Easy, classic, with materials you probably have at home (if you live near a pine tree).
Mason Jar Leaf Votives
Now this is the proper way to pay homage to those vibrant hues of the changing leaves.
DIY Magnolia Wreath with Burlap and Grosgrain
You’ll need to find a magnolia tree to pull this one off. This will be easier for some than others. But oh, look at the results! Just brimming with southern hospitality.
DIY Candy Corn Coasters
This takes 30 minutes. That’s what I call instant gratification. Scratch your crafting itch with these cute as pumpkin pie coasters with leftover fabric and ribbon you have at home!

Homemade Acorn Wreath
Hope your neighborhood squirrels aren’t too greedy. This wreath is a showstopper!
Adorable Acorn and Pinecone Garland
This is what squirrel dreams are made of, am I right? These are too cute for just one season.
Leaf and Book Garland
Are you a book lover and an autumn enthusiast? This homemade banner was made just for you. But one word of caution: make sure it’s not one of my books you are cutting to pieces. Surely there are others that would be better suited for this project.
DIY Flannel Coasters
I love a cozy flannel on a Fall afternoon. I’m also sure I have an old one somewhere or other than could use some recycling.
Super Fancy Blue and White Porcelain Pumpkins
I don’t know what tattoo paper is and I don’t often go to the Dollar Store, but I think I can make a special trip for this! My goodness, I’ve never seen a pumpkin so pretty.
Buffalo Check Pumpkins
Is it just me or has buffalo check invaded every store in the last few months? It’s everywhere, and I’m here for it.
Fall Leaves Table Runner
I love this fresh take on the traditional Fall palette. I would probably opt for colors that complement my Fiesta ware. Then I would have to have a dinner party. Looks like I have my weekend plans cut out for me.
What are you crafting up this Fall? I would love to see!

Walking The Cotswolds, Part 2
(This post is part 2 of of a series, Walking The Cotswolds – part 1 can be found here )
Before I continue my earlier post about our walking holiday in the Cotswolds, I thought It would be a good idea to talk about equipment you’ll need for a cross country walking tour.
Because the Cotswolds Walks company booked our rooms and arranged for luggage transfers from one hotel to the next, we did not have to carry heavy backpacks. This made our walks easier and much more fun. However, as we were walking an average of eight miles per day, we did need some equipment for safety and comfort.
What to Pack for a Cross Country Walking Tour
Obviously, good walking shoes are a must. Hiking boots would be great but I wore my running shoes. Anything with a good tread on the sole will work. Many walkers that we encountered while walking The Cotswolds used walking poles, which can be a good idea, especially if you have any concerns about balance.
I carried a lightweight day pack with a few essentials – two water bottles (blue for him, pink for me), sunscreen, energy bars for between pub snacking, lightweight waterproof jackets in case of rain, and a travel-sized first aid kit. That turned out to be very handy when The Chairman cut his hand climbing over a stile. We also had a printed guide with detailed direction supplied by our tour company, and my phone with an app that included a detailed GPS map of our trail.
On our first day out, I purchased a fairly fabulous National Historic Trust trekking hat that I wore every single day. Not only did it help shield my face and eyes from the sun and rain, it was pretty darned adorable. (Having the right accessories, as we all know, makes walking miles and miles and miles easier.)

WALKING THE COTWSOLDS DAY FOUR – WINDRUSH WAY AND WARDEN’S WAY
By the fourth day, our bodies had become so accustomed to long walks that five miles felt like nothing more than a good stretch of the legs. So we weren’t the least bit daunted by the idea of a ten mile loop to the village of Naughton. It was another beautiful day and after the usual enormous English breakfast at our hotel, The Slaughters Country Inn in Lower Slaughter, we set off.
The theme of the day was gardens. I’d always heard that the English were avid gardeners. Let me tell you, seeing is believing. It seemed that the garden of each fairytale cottage and farmhouse we passed was even lovelier than the last.
Another theme was getting lost. Somehow or other, we veered off course onto private land. When I looked at my map app in my phone, I could see that the trail we should have been on was perhaps a quarter mile to the east, so we bushwhacked through some forest and brush to get back on track. This was easier said than done. Emerging from the woods, we had to climb over a very high fence, only to find ourselves at the top of a steep hill. As we slalomed back and forth across the hill, I posited to The Chairman, “man, were we in one of my books this would be the moment when we were confronted by an angry bull!” The Chairman was not amused.
However, his mood lightened considerably when we got to the charming village of Naughton and the Black Horse Pub. We had a delicious and simply enormous lunch. When I apologized for not being able to eat even half of my lasagna, the waitress said, “That’s all right. We’re used to feeding those farm boys.” The Black Horse is the only pub in Naughton but their monopoly status doesn’t stop them from serving great food and offering good service. I’d go back in a heartbeat.
The Chairman had an afternoon conference call so we called for a taxi to take him back to the hotel after lunch. I continued on my own, looping back to our hotel through still more beautiful scenery. When I returned, his conference call was ongoing so I decided to walk to nearby Bourton-on-the-Water.
Known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water is one of England’s most popular tourist destinations. It was late in the day and a weekday when I got there, so the crowds weren’t too overwhelming. I did a little window shopping and had some locally made ice cream, but mostly I just enjoyed walking alongside the canals and taking in the scenery before heading back to the hotel. I’d walked 15 miles that day and so, as you can imagine, I slept very well that night.
COTWSOLDS DAY FIVE
The next morning, we transferred by taxi to The Swan Hotel in Bibury, our final stop on the tour. Like all the hotels on our trip, the Swan was a five-star property. But they definitely took the prize for most luxurious bathroom!
Bibury is another very popular Cotswolds tourist destination. William Morris described it as “the most beautiful village in England” and it’s hard to argue with his assessment. In 1921, Emperor Hirohito (then the Crown Prince) visited Bibury and sang its praises. Consequently, it continues to be a favorite destination of Japanese visitors today. The many busloads of tourists coming in every day do somewhat mar the experience but Bibury is still a charming spot.
We took a relatively short, six-mile circular walk to Coln Saint Aldwyn. We passed Bibury’s famous Arlington row, cottages that once housed the town’s weavers, and walked through lots of lovely farmland along the way. After returning to Bibury, we visited the village’s famous trout farm, located right next to our hotel.
This was one of the Chairman’s favorite parts of our trip because, as he said, “it was just so simple.” I agreed. After paying a small entrance fee and purchasing fish food, we strolled along the many, many trout ponds, tossing food and laughing at the resulting feeding frenzy. We also ended up feeding quite a few ducks and some rather demanding swans. It was simple and peaceful and fun, and reminded me of childhood pleasures.
COTWSOLDS DAY SIX
On the final full day of our tour of walking The Cotswolds, we chose to forgo a walk and visit the market town of Cirencester, England’s second biggest Roman city outside of London. We started with a visit to the Church of St. John the Baptist, which dates from early 1100. The day was chilly so we didn’t mind being inside and enjoyed learning about the history of the church and seeing the beautiful architecture and artifacts, including a silver cup given to Dr. Richard Masters by Anne Boleyn.
Next, we went to the fascinating Corinium Museum, where we learned about the city’s Roman roots, dating back to 80AD, and about Roman civilization and occupation in general. It’s an excellent museum and I was especially impressed by the huge, original mosaic tile floors. They were discovered in the mid-1800s, by workmen who were digging a sewer. My imagination was working overtime as I envisioned what a thrill it must have been for them to stumble upon such a momentous historical find! We spent a good two hours in the museum, then did a bit more exploring and shopping in Cirencester before taking a taxi back to the hotel.
The Chairman had another conference call that afternoon. Having gotten so used to walking miles each day, I was feeling a little antsy being stuck inside. And so, in spite of cold and cloudy weather, I set out to walk on my own.
I planned to go six miles. Two miles in, when it started to sprinkle, I realized that I’d left my hat at the hotel and turned around. This was a good decision because quickly turned to downpour. By the time I got back to the hotel, I was soaked to the skin.
Being deprived of my last walk on my last day of walking the Cotswolds was a bit disappointing, but disappointment turned to contentment after I changed into dry clothes and went downstairs to the cozy bar to enjoy a book and a delicious cream tea. (I learned all about proper English Tea etiquette here!)
The Chairman joined me before long. We exchanged tea pots for gin and tonics and toasted the end of a truly magical journey to the Cotswolds, a place we hope to return to very, very soon.
Don’t miss my notes on the rest of my trip, from sightseeing in Paris to textile shopping in Paris to a visit to Highclere Castle. Oh, what fun!

3 Days In Paris: My Time In The City Of Lights
As I explained in my last post about shopping for fabrics and fiber, my Paris itinerary was far too ambitious for a 3-day visit. I knew that even before we arrived.
But the way I see it, no one has ever died from a surfeit of aspiration. And so, before we left home, I decided to make a very long list of all the things I wanted to do, see, and buy during my time there and simply do as much as I could.
All things considered, we ticked quite a few things off the list.
We started off with a sunset boat tour on the Seine with Bateaux Mouches. It was definitely touristy but this turned out to be one of our favorite activities while in Paris and gave me a good overview of the history and geography of the city, as well as some stunning photo ops!
They offer dinner and champagne cruises but we just went with the basic tour, which was quite reasonable, and saved our money for dinner at one of the city’s many lovely cafes. (We never had a disappointing meal while in Paris; it’s reputation for gastronomic excellence is well-deserved.)
Museums Of Paris
Paris has a museum for absolutely everything; I suspect you could spend a year in Paris and not see them all. We hit a few of the biggest.
At the Louvre, of course we saw the Mona Lisa. Really, there’s almost no way to avoid it. As soon as we passed the ticket turnstiles we were thrust into a throng of people who were all heading one direction, around corners and up escalators in a long and inescapable line along a path lined with posters of the dear Mona and arrows pointing in the direction we were forced to head. It’s a lovely painting, but small and hard to see with so many people.
Personally, I could have skipped that part because there are so many, many incredible paintings, sculptures and objects of art in the Louvre. I’d rather have had more time to see the rest of it.
Still, I suppose that waving at the Mona Lisa is one of those things you have to do. Now I have.
My favorite art museum was l’Orangerie. It’s known for the two huge oval installations of Monet’s water lily paintings, which are really beautiful. I enjoyed the exhibits on the lower floor as well, especially the substantial Renoir collection. This museum was far less crowded than the Louvre, so I was able to spend as much time as I wanted looking at each painting.
We had hoped to visit the Musee d’Orsay but it was closed on Monday and the lines on Tuesdays were just too daunting. But it’s always good to have something on the list for next time, oui?

A Destination Befitting The Chairman
A visit to Les Invalides was at the top of my husband’s list. Formally known as Hôtel national des Invalides, these magnificent buildings were built by Louis XIV in 1690 (finished in 1697) as a hospital and retirement home for veterans. Part of it still serves that purpose today but it also houses three different historical museums, as well as Napoleon’s Tomb, which is fascinating.
Is it weird that I spent much of my time at Napoleon’s tomb photographing the floor tiles? The quilter in me just couldn’t get over these gorgeous motifs. Think what stunning applique quilt blocks these would make! Suffice it to say, I really enjoyed my time at Les Invalides! Half a day gave us a good overview but, once again, I wished we’d had more time.
Paris By Foot
More than anything else during our trip we walked. And walked. And walked. Paris is a feast for the eyes – the architecture, the shop windows, and the Parisians themselves are simply lovely to see. (The instant we got there, I realized I should have brought more and fancier dresses!).
Of course, we walked through the enormous and exquisite Tuileries gardens and I went on my own to see the gardens at Luxembourg Palace. These famous, formal gardens were incredibly beautiful but the small pocket gardens I encountered every few blocks were a delightful and most welcome surprise.
Usually, I’m ill-at-ease in big cities but I never felt that way in Paris. I think those charming little gardens, the Edenic corners that give rest to the eye and soul were the reason. Even in the busiest, most bustling parts of Paris, it’s fairly easy to find a quiet bench in a green space to rest your feet and mind.
Of course, I left time in my schedule for shopping. As I said in my earlier post, fabric and fiber was one area where I refused to cut back on my aspirations. But when it came to the rest of it; I had to pick and choose.
Paris Shopping
First stop, Laduree for what are, arguably, the world’s best macarons. (People have very strong feelings about macarons, I’ve discovered. Clearly, more research on this topic will be required on a future trip.)
Following a tip from a friend, I steered clear of the busy Champs-Elysee store and found a shop on the Left Bank. There were so many flavors! Too many, actually, so I asked the sales girl to choose 6 of her favorites for me and was rewarded with a charming smile. Macarons from Laduree are something of an investment. The Chairman just couldn’t see how 6 cookies could be worth 20 Euros. Then I gave him one. Big mistake. I had to fight to get my half of the box!
Chocolatiers are even more common than pocket gardens in Paris. I found a marvelous one near our hotel. As the name implies, the emphasis of these shops is chocolates but with the temperatures in the humid mid-nineties, I didn’t want to risk buying gifts that would melt. So when I saw a display window with beautiful pastel colored nougat, I went inside and bought two small bags.
Nutty For Nougat
They were intended as gifts but I couldn’t resist trying one. Nougat is a candy I remembered from my childhood but I hadn’t had any for decades and, oh my! I never had any like this!
Those chewy, thin slices with delicate flavors of vanilla, pistachio, and almond were simply divine! I gave one to The Chairman with predictable results. The next morning, I retraced my steps to the shop and bought more nougat, a LOT more.
But even if we ration it, our supply is bound to run out before long. So I immediately began looking at a few recipes, hoping to make my own once we were home. I quickly realized that edible rice paper is a necessary ingredient of nougat. This isn’t something I recalled seeing in the states so I popped into a little food shop to see if they had any in stock. What a lucky break that turned out to be! This jumbled little shop was a veritable treasure trove of culinary delights – beautiful jellies, jams, marmalades, and sweets at very reasonable prices. My luggage wouldn’t allow me to buy all I wanted but I found my rice paper and bought some French candies for the granddarlings.
Oh, yes. The granddarlings.
Like most grammys I am a sucker for those sweet little dumplings. I’m so much more inclined to splurge on them than on myself. The moment I walked into Tartine et Chocolat, I was doomed. But, those little girls are going to look so precious, so adorable, so very, very French in their matching pinafores!
How could I resist?
I couldn’t. Not any more than, as an author, I could resist making two literary pilgrimages in the City of Lights.
Case in point, here’s my almost three year old grand darling, dubbed The Macaroon, who is loving her fancy frock.
A Paris Pilgrimage
Shakespeare and Company has been selling English books in Paris since 1919, first at the Rue de l’Odeon, and since 1951 at the Rue de la Bucherie, near the Sorbonne. Though the shop is really quite small, they carry a good selection of classic books. Not wanting to carry heavy books in my luggage, I settled on two sweet little notebooks as souvenirs.
The last simply-had-to-be-done stop on our whirlwind tour of Paris was the iconic Hemmingway Bar in Ritz hotel, the favorite watering hole for “Papa” and so many other writers. After the Germans left Paris, he famously “liberated” the bar. (To learn the real story and more of the history of the fabulous Ritz, I highly recommend Melanie Benjamin’s delightful new novel, Mistress of the Ritz.)
On our last night in Paris, The Chairman and I lifted a glass. We toasted in homage of Papa and of Paris and promised each other that we’ll return to this magical city again.

One-point Tomato Lentil Soup Recipe with Turmeric & Lemon
True story: it snowed here today. Not even October and I’m pulling on my snow boots and stuffing Showgirl into a sweater.
This weather certainly took me by surprise, not just because of general weather trends that I’ve grown to trust, but my body just isn’t quite ready for below freezing temps yet. I needed to be eased into it a little more gently and ceremoniously. Despite my goosebumps and a chill that I can’t seem to quite kick, I’m thrilled for the snow and the seasons and the winter wonderland that came early. Because it brings two truths to mind: it won’t be hot forever (AMEN!) and the holidays are around the corner (a.k.a. my favorite time of the year).
The snow also ushers in the cool weather flavors and comfort food that I’ve longed for all summer. Not only is it pumpkin spice latte season, it’s also soup season! It arrived early and I’m here for it. Bring on the broccoli cheddar chicken soup, hearty chicken stews, the zero-point chili, and the mushroom soup. I could go on, but I don’t want to make myself too hungry to finish this post!
Why This Lentil Soup Recipe Works
I’m always looking for easy lunch options or make-ahead dinner options that don’t require a lot of attention or time. This satisfies both. I make a big batch at the beginning of the week and enjoy it for the next three days or so. I even froze half of my recipe last time to have it on hand.
It’s also healthy and while I don’t shy away from eating meat, this vegan recipe doesn’t make me miss the meat. Not one bit. The lentils are hearty, packed with protein and fiber. The spices make your house smell incredible and give it depth. The lemon and herbs brighten up the flavor that makes it taste so fresh. Turmeric is apparently great for heart burn so that’s just another plus.
With one Weight Watchers freestyle point per serving, it’s a smart choice to balance out all the pumpkin spice treats in your life! I hope you enjoy this lentil soup recipe as much as I have.
Here’s how to make it.

1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs like parsley, cilantro, or basil
salt to taste
Instructions
Over medium heat, add the olive oil into your Dutch oven (or a large sauce pan). Add onions and carrots with a pinch of salt and stir occasionally until softened and aromatic, about 10 minutes.
Stir in the tomatoes, garlic and all the spices and cook for another 30 seconds.
Add the lentils and broth to the pan. Turn the heat up to high and bring to a boil. Then, reduce the heat, cover, and simmer until the lentils are tender, about 40 minutes.
Cut the heat and stir in herbs and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serve with a sprinkling of herbs, avocado, or feta—just remember some of those optional toppings will bump up the point count for Weight Watchers!
