Jinx's Mate

Chapter One

He felt the fear that radiated from Manetka Resort, could taste the blood of tortured victims in the stale air. It was once a joyful gathering place for shifters, now a prison for all those who served under the Alpha. And Jinx was there to stop it.

He strolled through the empty lobby to the reception desk, the clicking of his cowboy boots echoing through the open space. The freshly polished wood reflected the light from the chandeliers. Manetka Resort was one of the few places that catered only to shifters. For years it had been a must visit destination. That was until Avery began abusing his members. Now everywhere Jinx looked, it was clear the resort had begun to suffer.

A small seating area sat catty-corner to the reception desk, with large comfortable looking chairs, and floor to ceiling windows overlooking the massive swimming pool and hot tubs.

“Welcome to Manetka Resort! How may I help you?” A girl in her early twenties stood behind the counter, and he could smell the tigress, her apprehension drifting toward him.

“Yes, I’m checking in.” He came to stand in front of the counter and set his bag down. “I have a reservation. Jinx.”

She glanced at the leather bound book to confirm it, not bothered by the fact he only had one name. It wasn’t uncommon for shifters to use just one name. It gave them an identity that didn’t tie them to family members. Allowed them to go forth without prejudices. Since shifters tended to have a very long lifeline this made things easier for them to intermingle without centuries-old grudges hanging over their heads.

“It appears to be an open check-out date. Do you have an idea how long you’ll be with us?”

“I suspect just through the weekend, but I’d like to leave it open if that’s okay. I have some business that I need to attend to while I’m in town, and timing might be an issue for the other party.”

She wrote something in the book and nodded. “That won’t be a problem. You’re welcome to stay as long as you like. I’ll have your room key ready in a moment.”

“I’m not in a hurry.” He glanced around the lobby again. “Slow time of year?” He knew the reason for the place being empty, but wanted to hear the official line Avery had come up with.

The woman paused, and bit her lip before gathering herself. “Actually, we were supposed to have a conference here but they had to cancel. It left most of the resort empty, since we were closed to only their members for the week.”

He nodded, amused by the interesting cover story. A conference? Did Avery really think someone was going to swallow that? Shifters didn’t hold conferences. Clans had their own things going, but they would never rent out a hotel to hold it in, not when they had their own land to do it on.

“Lucky me, seems like I’ll have the place to myself.”

“If you prefer isolation, then it’s the perfect time for a visit.” She laid his room key on the counter. “I’ve booked you on the eighth floor, you’ll have an excellent view of the grounds. No other rooms are occupied on that floor, so you’ll have all the privacy you need. Enjoy your stay.”

He smiled at her and grabbed the key. “Thank you.” Manetka’s keys were old fashioned, none of those electronic ones you slid into a card reader. It appeared Avery didn’t trust technology. The resort had a website managed by a solitary shifter, deeply hidden so humans couldn’t stumble upon it, but that was as far as his technology reached. Even security cameras were absent.

He grabbed his bag and headed to the elevator. Having the floor to himself would allow him to come and go without being seen, giving him the opportunity to check the passages Shadow had discovered on the blueprints that linked the other buildings to the main one.

As he made his way to his suite he kept his sunglasses on, taking in everything without anyone being suspicious. Not that it mattered—the place was deserted. Other than the woman behind the counter, no one else was around. Even with his enhanced shifter hearing he couldn’t pick up on any movements behind the walls. Where was everyone?

Stepping off the elevator was like stepping into a ghost town. A thin layer of dust covered the surfaces, all the curtains were drawn, light bulbs had gone out and no one bothered to replace them. The resort was going to need some work to get it back into the condition it had been only weeks before.

Once Tex had escaped the tortures and vowed himself to the Alaskan Tigers, the news spread of what was happening under Avery’s control. People cancelled their reservations to the resort, choosing to stay home or go to another resort that catered to their kind, and things fell into disrepair quickly.

He slid the key into the lock, and opened the door. Inside was much the same as the rest of the floor. The only difference was someone had tried to clean up before he checked in. The bedding and towels had been changed, a quick sweep of the duster, but nothing could replace the staleness in the air. The room had been closed for too long.

His cell phone vibrated with a text message. Instead of answering it, he took a wand the clan had developed to check for any listening devices and scanned the room.

He knew it was Ty who wanted an update. With the mission hanging on what he found inside the resort, he couldn’t take any chances. Ty didn’t like that Jinx was risking himself to do a little recon before they took down Avery. Jinx was the Alpha to the West Virginia clan, and he had people willing to do this for him. It had never been his way. He had Elder guards, all Alphas did, but he rarely used them. He didn’t like to ask someone to do something he wasn’t willing to do himself.

The scan came up clean and he pulled his cell phone from his belt and dialed Ty’s number. Even with another Alpha, Ty couldn’t stop himself from trying to protect everyone. Thankful for that, Jinx didn’t mind. He knew Ty was just trying to protect him. With the future as it was for the Alaskan Tigers, Tabitha soon to claim her place as queen, Ty needed the support of the West Virginia Tigers.

“It’s about time. You were supposed to check in ten minutes ago,” Ty bitched.

“Traffic and the receptionist had me delayed.” He tugged open the curtains, bringing light into the dark room. “As we expected, the place has fallen. I don’t believe there’s a guest in the entire resort. They put me on the eighth floor, a corner room near the stairs. Seems slightly odd it wouldn’t be closer to the elevator since she mentioned there was no one else here.”

“I don’t like this. Avery might know who you are, and suspect why you’re there.”

“I won’t be here long enough, and I didn’t make it to Alpha without knowing how to protect myself.” Jinx slid his hand into his pocket, playing with a silver talisman that had been in his clan for centuries, handed down from Alpha to Alpha. “He’s fearful of technology. No security cameras, even the registration isn’t done on a computer.”

“Tex suspected it, but he was rarely allowed to leave Avery’s compound. It was just by luck he was the only one available to go to the landing strip to guard the helicopter until Adam and Robin got there, or we’d still be in the dark about what’s happening there.”

Jinx set his bag on the edge of the bed and pulled his weapons out. Walking into the resort in full battle gear would have raised alarms, but there was no way he’d leave them behind. “With the place dead, I’m going to scope it out. See if I can find out anything else. In the meantime, call Avery and put the second part of our plan into action. If we can get him away from here to confront him it would be best. There are too many floors, rooms, and passages to take him down without people getting hurt.”

“I’ll let him know I’m coming to the area to return Tex. I’ll see if he’s willing to meet me at the same landing strip. If not, we’ll have to do it there, so we need you to find an access route to him.”

“I have the blueprints, and I’m going to check out the places Shadow marked.” Jinx slid a second gun into his shoulder holster before strapping a knife to a wrist sheath.

“Don’t get yourself killed,” Ty ordered.

“I won’t. I’ll call you when I get back.” He slid his light jacket back into place, hiding his weapons.

“You have one hour or I’m sending a team in after you.”

“Make it two. I don’t know what I’ll find.”

“That’s the reason. You could end up lying somewhere bleeding out and we wouldn’t know it. One hour. If you run into danger get the hell out of there.”

“I’m not here to try to get myself killed.” Jinx smirked.

“No, you’re there because you’re an idiot. We don’t need you risking yourself when we could storm the place and end it.”

“We’re wasting time,” he reminded Ty.

“Be safe.” Ty hung up before Jinx could say he would.

* * *

Finding the basement and access to the tunnels had been no problem at all. The issue came when Jinx realized there were more than just those on the blueprint. Additional passages had been dug out, some of them leading nowhere, others leading to new sections altogether. With each turn he made, the danger level rose. There were too many places someone could attack from. The tunnels were a maze meant to confuse anyone who found themselves where they didn’t belong.

He couldn’t leave a trail of breadcrumbs, or a rope leading back to where he came from. Instead he counted his steps, marking it down in a small notebook he shoved into his back pocket on his way out the door. It wasn’t the best way of keeping track of where he had come from, but there were few options. If he had to run back the way he came, he’d be out of luck.

He could either continue on or turn back. Rather than admit he’d failed, he continued forward. Following the most likely route Shadow mapped, he carefully kept track of how he’d come, the steps and direction of his movements.

His cell phone vibrated and mentally he cursed Ty. This was not the time. According to Shadow’s notes there were only another seventy-five feet separating him from what should be the entrance to Avery’s compound. He thought about ignoring it but when it vibrated again he snatched off his belt and read the text message.

Get out! Get to your SUV now! Call when you get there.

Sunrise – Morgan Emerson

Sunrise Final - 1400x2100 This is a free read! Go pick it up!

Summary:

A woman who is scared to trust, and a man who thought he’d never love again.

Katherine Niccoli is a successful accountant with an impeccable reputation. She’s worked tooth and nail to improve her life, so she doesn’t have to depend on anyone again. She learned the hard way that men can’t be trusted—having been a teenage mom and suffering through an ugly marriage. She doesn’t risk getting involved anymore. She’s happy dating young, uncomplicated arm candy.

Miles Chase never thought he’d find love again. One steamy weekend in Cabo changed all that. Away for a weekend of playing golf with friends, Miles blew off his plans and enjoyed a passion-filled encounter with a gorgeous woman. When she was gone the next morning, he was left feeling empty and alone all over again.

When Miles meets Kat again at a charity fundraiser six months later, how can he convince her that she can trust him with her heart?

Excerpt:

Chapter One

The Favor

Miles Chase easily spotted his son standing with the other families at the bottom of the escalators at the arrival terminal. The eager look everyone wore as they waited for their loved ones coming off the planes was always a joy to see. Kyle, though, stood at the outer edge of the large group, looking dapper in his sleek suit, and was looking down at his phone.

Watching a frown mar Kyle’s face, he worried that his son worked too much. He was too young to be so serious already. Just as Miles reached the bottom of the escalator, Kyle tucked his phone away and looked up. Miles lifted his hand, and Kyle stepped forward to embrace his dad. Miles patted his son on the back a few times before stepping back and studied him some more.

Even though Kyle was the spitting image of himself, Miles could still see some of his wife in him. A pang of sadness hit him when he thought of her not seeing how Kyle had turned out.

“You didn’t have to pick me up. I could’ve taken a cab, son,” Miles offered with his hand on Kyle’s shoulder.

“I know, Dad, but then who would’ve taken you to lunch?” Kyle smiled.

They had left the airport and climbed into Kyle’s Audi before they spoke again, making small talk about the local weather and what was happening back home in Georgia. Miles couldn’t help but notice his son jumped anytime his phone made a noise and was a bit distracted the whole drive.

They were finally settled down to eat at Miles’s favorite restaurant near the beach in Malibu before Kyle inquired about his sudden visit.

“It’s not that I don’t love seeing you, Dad, but this is your third trip in six months. Is everything okay? Something you’re not telling me?” Kyle asked with a concerned look.

Miles chewed his bite of steak and considered how to explain his feelings. He found it difficult since he couldn’t pinpoint anything specific, only that there was something bothering him. The usual loneliness and boredom that had plagued him since his wife died were there, but it was more than that lately. It was a soul-deep feeling of something missing from his life.

“If I’m being honest with you, son, I’d have to say I’m probably missing your mother. She’s been gone awhile now, but being near you always makes me feel closer to her, I guess,” he explained.

“I miss her too.” Kyle’s voice broke. Miles patted Kyle’s shoulder.

“Is that all that’s going on? How’s the business doing?”

“It’s great. We’re finally seeing a pretty solid upswing after the market took such a hit from the GFC. Robert and I were lucky we got into commercial real estate as well as the residential, so we’re turning a pretty nice profit.

“That’s great, Dad,” Kyle said. “So with business booming how are you able to get away so much?”

Miles smiled. “We’ve got some good people in place, son, we’ve been planning for this for a while now.”

Miles thought back to the conversation with his business partner about taking some time away, and Robert had been all for it. They’d set up some great managers a while ago to assist them, and they were both comfortable enough now to leave things in their capable hands.

“I suppose I’m feeling a bit restless, but that’s not really it either. It started, I guess, when I returned home from the weekend in Mexico six months ago where I met that woman,” Miles said. “It’s not everyday someone can touch you that deeply in such a short time.” Kyle nodded.

Miles would never forget Kat, the woman who’d rocked his world one steamy weekend in Cabo. At the resort for a weekend of golf with friends, all it had taken was one glance at the woman by the pool, looking like a movie star in her white bikini and sunglasses, and he’d forgotten all about golf.

He had never known her last name and was unable to track her down as Kyle had suggested he do when Miles told his son about her previously. He stared out the window of the restaurant as memories of that weekend flooded him. The smell of the lotion she used, the sound of the waves as they lay on the bed with the balcony doors open.

I’m sharing a sexy snippet from my book, Against the Ropes.

Blurb:

Five years ago Dylan Gomez had it all. He was an up-and-coming boxer with a loving girlfriend, and his sights were set on the big league. Then he let the hype of the fans inflate his ego—he thought he was invincible. That all changed when an alcohol-fueled decision altered theAgainst the Ropes 600x900 course of his life. He lost his girlfriend and then bit-by-bit his life crumbled around him.

Physical therapist, Regan Holloway, has coasted through life for the last five years. She’s been in the same place all that time and most of her things are still in boxes. Agreeing to a “friendly” date with a co-worker, she ends up ringside and face-to-face with the man she’d fled to forget—Dylan.

Dylan’s turning his life around and working his way back up the ranks; he’s got a big fight lined up in thirty days that will be his ticket back into the pros—if he can win. The only thing holding him back is an old shoulder injury and Regan not being by his side.

When Max, Dylan’s manager, convinces Regan to come with them and work on his shoulder for the fight, she knows she needs to keep things professional so that she won’t be hurt again.

In the thirty-day countdown to the big fight, secrets are revealed, their passion is reignited, and the past threatens to haunt their future. On fight day, Dylan and Regan are truly against the ropes.

Excerpt:

Regan bent back into Cobra position feeling the wonderful curve in her spine and looked out the corner of her eye at Dylan.

They had moved the livingroom furniture around to make room for them both to fit in front of the television. Dylan was sweating profusely, breathing hard, and cursing under his breath.

“The spine is not meant to bend like this,” he muttered.

Regan said nothing, but inhaled deeply and moved into Cat-Cow as the woman on the TV told her to.

She had been wracking her brain the past couple of days on how to get Dylan to stretch more. As she suspected, his brawn was as flexible as stone, and as far as he was concerned, serious stretching was for “cheerleaders and ballet dancers,” as he so eloquently put it.

Exhaling, she rounded her spine and glanced over at Dylan again. He was going to be sore tomorrow.

The woman on the TV told them to move into Downward Dog, and Regan closed her eyes and pushed her butt up in the air feeling the stretch in her extended arms and down the back of her legs. It felt great. She thought this one may be tough on Dylan’s shoulder, and she looked over at him to see how he was doing. His arms and legs looked like bent sticks, and the sweat trickled off the tip of his nose. He cursed silently, and she burst out laughing and crumpled to the floor on her stomach.

“What’s so funny?” Dylan asked, coming down to his knees.

She rolled over to her back, still laughing. Regan knew she shouldn’t find Dylan’s attempt at yoga so funny, but she couldn’t help it. He looked ridiculous in his inflexibility.

“Nothing,” she said, trying to stop the giggles.

“Yes, there is. What’s so funny, Regan?”

At that point, she had tears rolling down her face, and she realized how stressed she had been. The laughter and tears were about so much more than Dylan looking silly trying to get into Downward Dog. She wiped her eyes, and Dylan appeared above her, smiling. “Are you laughing at me?”

She shook her head, and the laughter started all over again.

“You are laughing at me!”

Dylan then tickled her ribs, which he knew from the past that would send her into more fits of giggles. Despite being weak from laughter, she struggled against him, and he put his weight on her to keep her in place.

“Stop!” she yelled between gasps. “Please! Stop!”

After a moment, Dylan quit, and she finally got ahold of herself.

Their eyes locked, and her breath caught. It was then that she realized the intimacy of the situation. She was flat on her back and Dylan hovered above her. All he needed to do was lower his body to hers, and he would cover her like a blanket. Her body screamed yes, her head yelled no.

Something in her face must have said yes, because the next thing she knew, Dylan was on top of her, his mouth covering hers. It was as if her body had a mind of its own, because it wasn’t listening to her.

Her arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer. Her core became molten within seconds and her legs seemed to spread on their own accord.

Dylan gently stroked her neck, her shoulder, the side of her breast and down her hip. He bent her leg up so that he could bury his arousal deeper between her legs, and she cursed the clothing that separated them. She felt as though she would weep with the desire that rolled through her.

His tongue founds hers, and he nipped her bottom lip. He kissed the side of her face, and down the column of her neck. Finding the hem of her tank top, he slowly lifted it, revealing that she wasn’t wearing a bra. Letting out a groan, his mouth quickly found her right nipple and shockwaves jolted through her body at the contact.

Good God. After everything this man had put her through, he still made her feel as though she would explode with his touch.

She ran her fingers through his hair as his tongue wreaked havoc on her senses, bringing her nipple to a rigid peak.

His hips thrust into hers, and as she felt his arousal, she gave up trying to be rational and handed herself over to the experience. Lifting the hem to his t-shirt,she let her hands run over the ridges and valleys of his strong back.

“Oh, God, Regan,” he whispered. “You taste so good.”

Readers’ Favorite Award Ceremony

I know I promised I would blog about this right when I got home, but life sometimes gets in the way of my good intentions.

As most of you know, Noah went and won  himself a bronze medal. I had to lug that big boy across the country to Miami, Florida to collect it, and it was a lot of fun.

First, and most importantly, I had almost everyone I love in that room with me: my husband, my son, my parents and my college room from . . . I can’t even do the math from how many years ago. That’s why I write. I like letters, not numbers. Anyway, it was awesome to be surrounded by the people who make up the very foundation of my life.

The first thing I have to say is that the weather in Miami is just awful for someone who is used to the dry weather of Arizona. It was eighty degrees with 100% humidity. I felt like my jeans were made of cement, and my hair took on a whole new level of frizziness that I’d never seen before.

It wasn’t pretty.

So let’s get on with it, shall we?

I shoved Noah in my suitcase. He wasn’t happy.

When we arrived in Miami, I put Noah to bed. He’s a cranky traveler.

So in the end, Noah minded his manners, and a good time was had by all. Abby would have been proud.

Sweetest Splendor – Kacey Hammell

A Week in the Life of this Author

First off – a cute funny — 10 Ways to Seduce a Writer. LOVE IT!! Fun, and I agree with many of them.

10wayspic

Yeah, starting the week, word count chomping at the bit to be accomplished, the need for buckets of coffee is high, and I’d rather go back a couple days and start the weekend over.

monday

I feel the burn of writing, getting a lot accomplished, word count can bite my tush. Tuesday’s rock for me!

Tuesday

The good work from Tuesday doesn’t filter over to Wednesday that’s for sure. Wednesday’s are the craziest day of the week for me and I don’t write a lot on that day. Especially since the house clutter gets on my nerves by that day.

wednesday

The week has been too long already. It’s Thursday, I’ve written like a mad author one day, cleaned like an obsessed Mom another…is it the weekend yet!!??

thursday

Ahhh, Friday, which means the weekend is pretty much here, and Saturdays I can get some word count in when kids are off doing their social stuff. And by Friday I’m tuning out everything online.

friday

Saturday, time for some writing words. Hubs is home to drive kids here and there, and I can lock myself away in the bedroom and the characters will cooperate fully… yeah, I didn’t think so …

saturday

Sunday, mainly day for family time, but then the thought crosses my mind…

Sunday

LOL Hope you enjoyed the craziness of an Author & Mom’s week !!  *g*

Bridget Guthrie and Zander Hudson have worked at Club Splendor together for years, sharing smoldering glances, flirting, and building a friendship. Thanks to the club’s strict policy of no staff fraternization, they’ve resisted how much they truly want each another.

With Bridget leaving to explore her dreams, they no longer have to hide their passions. After hours, in one of the pleasure rooms at Club Splendor, they finally give in to the burning desire they’ve held at bay for too long.  She’s taken care of other people’s love lives for so long while at the club, can she find the courage to take care of her own needs and fantasies?

“I know following your dreams is important to you, Bridget. I’m happy for you.” Zander sidled closer, and massaged her stiff shoulders.

“Thank you. I know you are. It’s just—” she swallowed past the lump in her throat. “It is hard to think of leaving. I love this job. I’ll miss it.”

“You’ll miss me more though, right?” His light tone lifted her mood.

She laughed. “Of course. Who else will I get to boss around?”

He chuckled and pulled her in to his chest, aligning her against his stomach. Her breath hitched as his arms wrapped around her waist and squeezed her tight. Her nipples tingled and her heart rate accelerated.

Being this close to him, his long body behind her, the dreams she had about a moment like this…. She wished she could turn in his arms, press her lips to his and see where it led. But their friendship meant a lot to her. The fun flirting and teasing had never gone to the next level, but no other man in her life affected her more.

And now they would no longer be working together…but she wasn’t sure how deep his feelings for her ran.

“Damn, you smell good. What is that you’re wearing?” Zander asked, his face buried in her neck.

“Umm, something berry I guess.” Her words sounded breathless even to her own ears. He never held her like this before. She shivered.

“You cold?” He ran his palms over her stomach, then his arms tightened around her.

She shook her head, speechless, about to melt into a puddle at his feet. Relaxing into his embrace, she aligned with his front. “Zander–”

“You know I’ve always wondered something about you,” he murmured.

“What’s that?” she questioned, mouth dry.

“If any of what happens around this place excites you,” he whispered against her neck.

She reclined her head on his shoulder, sighing. Could she confess her innermost thoughts to him?

The air in the room heightened at least twenty degrees. The fire in her belly spread along her limbs to her fingertips. “Why is that important to you?”

Clasping her hands in his, he rasped, “I’ve always had the desire to know what makes you tick. I’ve watched you a long time, secretly wanting to know more about you. Finding reasons to be close to you.”

Excitement slithered along her body, her heart nearly leaping from her chest.

“We’ve been friends a long time, Bridget, but you know what? I want more.” He ran his lips along her neck, warming her skin until they reached her ear. “Tell me what turns you on,” he whispered, then captured her earlobe in his teeth.
