typicalfilm – Dracula Untold

image

Dracula Untold (2014)

Since writing Nightface, I’d inadvertently avoided vampire films. That is to say, Dracula films and uber-chic urban action vampire films as it wasn’t until Let The Right One In that I realized this. Instead of rectifying the situation I delved into films that reminded me of Nadja, like the more recent Girl Walks Home and Only Lovers Left Alive. You know, real vampires. When this film hit I’d meant to go to theatre but missed out, so I’m glad I finally decided to finish watching it. I’d started before last Halloween and was interrupted (by internal or external distractions, I can’t recall) and picked it back up since I was in the mood for a fairy tale. A really lovely take on the blend of the beast Dracula and the warmongering family man Vlad Tepes.

New Releases by HWA authors

For the past couple of years I’ve been the new releases moderator on horror.org. At first there was a little well oiled team of elves – take that vision where you will – but now it’s just little old me. Emphasis on the old. And with old comes crotchety curmudgeonlyness with bonus made-up words. Posting the recent fare is something I really like to do. A few weeks ago I was handed the reins to drive the Recently Born of Horrific Minds column for the HWA newsletter. Excite! It’s another facet of new releases and makes perfect sense for me to compile the column so we aren’t overlapping effort. I’m very pleased with the new station and looking forward to the June installment.

Over the past while I’d noticed that the way of the new releases was to post any book submitted. If the release date had passed, that’s fine as I figured it gave everyone a fair shake. It’s not always easy to promote your books and sometimes either life gets in the way or you only heard of an advertising method after the fact. That’s all well and good, however, there certainly are books that should not be listed. Last week this was addressed and will continue to be reflected in upcoming posts to the Members Books page (to a lesser extent) and in the newsletter (to a greater extent). This is still about giving everyone a fair shake, so if your book came out a year ago and you’ve been an active member, it may not be posted unless there is a reprint, abridged, alternate medium, or otherwise new car smell to the piece. Last month’s releases will still make it into the rotating banner on the site alongside the actual new releases since a month is but the beat of a moth wing in the lifetime flight a book takes. The newsletter will reflect recent work only since the title has always had the words ‘This Month’ within, so it just makes sense.

For further thought on why this is important, and why I’m willing to research release dates and will even contact authors to make sure I’m not skipping a reprint or new edition, read on. This wasn’t the only set of titles that caught my eye but it seems to be noticed by others. We are easily blinded by the eye candy that is the artwork – and we know I love the cover art – but those release dates are awfully nice to look at too. I am, after all, a data journalist at heart and have an affinity for numbers and the stories behind them.

Thank you, Ginger Nuts of Horror, for the work put into this article and drawing attention to this issue.

http://gingernutsofhorror.com/feature...

It’s far more than release dates, you’ll see that once read, but at the end of the day that’s the concerning part for me as it is free advertising for someone who is taking advantage of authors. Should you have any input, let me know. Members can post new books through the HWA members portal where contact information abounds!

Thanks ~

typicalfilm – Jeepers Creepers

image

Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Before I fawn over the second installment I had to rewatch the first. Just in case I’d missed something that makes so many people like this one better. I must have blinked and missed it. Sure this one has ‘the scares’ I suppose, as the discovery of the body bundle is a very tense scene, but all in all I find this one boring. Maybe it’s due to having the very few people on screen not be very interesting to me. Maybe it’s the long and clunky chase sequences. Unsure, but one thing that I do like is the slow tease introduction to The Creeper.

Dead Cells – 16 – Death Parade

So it has been a while but here is a new episode of Dead Cells where I get in line for the Death Parade.

A nice dark and brooding series from 2015 that gets a little Twilight Zone, like all good creepy anime do. Not a hell of a lot of blood here, save two episodes I highlight. Catch this one on Funimation or Hulu and catch me on Dead Air podcast.

If there is anything you think I should be watching, let me know here, on http://nightface.ca or @typicallydia on twitter, instagram, facebook and tumblr. Theme by Trent Reznor – Head Down from The Slip, used under creative commons – Thank you for listning!

Dead Air Ep 53 – Suicide Club

Gather under the sluice grate, for the latest Dead Air podcast episode has been mucked off the slab ~ http://ift.tt/1SI6coh

Before you listen to episode 53 of the Dead Air Podcast we have one question for you. Who are you connected to? The question that resonates with our characters as Japan is hit with an unprecedented wave of inexplicable suicides. Seemingly happy and well adjusted people ending their own lives en masse have the police force baffled and grasping for explanations. Stranger still is the grisly clues being left behind. The horrific events can’t seem to squash the national success of Dessert; a Japanese Idol band whose fun infectious tunes have everyone dancing but, of course these two things couldn’t be connected, could they? Also, Wes and Lydia answer fan questions about what sort of horror movie they would like to make.

typicalfilm – Baskin

baskin

Baskin (2015)

Not only is this another that you really need to see to be able to understand, it’s another film that is wonderfully covered on the amazing BindTortureKast. I found the first half mesmerizing… and that says a lot about how I reacted to the second half which is best described as hypnotic. Along with the interplay of colour, sound, gore and grime you have impeccable performances by basically every single person. The stand out star playing The Father could not have been a better choice. It seems the role, if not the entire film, was written for him. From the shorts on Evrenol’s site and the video that introduces us to this world, this filmmaker hopefully sticks with us in horror for a long time to come. It’s not a Hellraiser-ish place as many reviews have hinted at, so I’m glad I avoided those views and instead laughed along with the mainstream critics who obviously had no idea what they were in for but seemed to be secretly hoping for the next Bone Tomahawk.

Ottawa humans! This film will be at the Mayfair Theatre on April 27 and 28, presented by my pals at Zombieinfo.com!

Dead Air Ep 52 – Pieces

Gather under the sluice grate, for the latest Dead Air podcast episode has been mucked off the slab ~ http://ift.tt/1MkDz40

Episode 52 is exactly what you think it is! We’re back in the 80’s and it feels like we never left. This time to take on one of Lydia’s favourite movies from her childhood. The classic slasher Pieces! A seemingly normal college is under siege by a trench-coated ne’er-do-well with a penchant for carving up nubile co-eds with a chainsaw. An intense investigation goes underway to stop this madman before any more fall victim. Full of insane kills and inexplicable scenes this movie is as fun as it is inscrutable!

typicalfilm – Inside The Whore

InsideTheWhoreInside The Whore (2012)

Where would I be without Bind Torture Kast… well, I’d not be Inside The Whore, at least, I’m sure. This was one of those films that I’d not seen nor heard of until they reviewed it and man, am I glad they did! Beyond found-footage and mocumentary, Reinert Kiil heard you like meta on your meta so this ‘special feature’ is an addendum to his 2009 film ‘Hora’. That’s one I still thought I would skip even though I enjoyed Inside The Whore like mad – then I read that the sound engineer for Apoptygma Berzerk did the soundtrack and got curious. Maybe someday, Hora. For now I’m happy with the mindfuck that is this film. Wanna follow the worst film crew on the worst set filming the worst movie on their worst days where most meet their worst end? Well, except Mister Kiil since I think this is the star/director’s birthday and christmas all rolled into one beer-stained carpet and dumped somewhere in the bushes. There is no describing this film outside of the BTK review, as it really must be seen for the full effect.
