typicalfilm- Oct 3 -Chained

Chained (2012)

Not a wonder that Jennifer Lynch could come up with the most striking film I’ve seen in a long time. Since seeing the trailer ages ago, it’s been on my list and only recently it became a very affordable rental on iTunes. I should have bought it, but honestly, it’s going to be worth the physical purchase when I get around to it. Bindtorturekast had covered it for their episode 71 – which I’d completely forgotten since I’d been in ‘no spoiler’ mode – and I’ve not heard a peep elsewhere. Surprising, since it’s not only a beautiful film and remarkably shot, written, and acted; Chained is absolutely terrifying. For a girl that loves gore and action, this understated journey through two of the most messed up lives ever blows most horror out of the water. Quietly.

typicalfilm – Oct 2 – Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning  (2008)

I’d partially watched this after hearing Chris and Luke of BindTortureKast try to recall the gore level of this film and the difference between the cut and unrated versions. Also, since we have a huge Halloween episode coming up on Dead Air where we’ll be all over the original TCM 1 and 2, I wanted to get into the Hewitt story before getting back into my beloved Sawyers. It’s a very nice entry into the Leatherface story anyhow, even if all the Hollywood glam does kind of gloss over the grit. Mealtime is always the best time in Texas I gather, and though the gore is poorly lit, panned or quick cut, it does have a very cool intro to the birth of their pet monster.

typicalfilm – Oct 1 – The Bunny Game

The Bunny Game (2012)

For the first film of October, marking the start of 31 days of the dark stuff, I finally watched The Bunny Game. It’s been on my radar for a long time but skipped mostly due to people using this as some sort of tough kid litmus test. What drew me to this is it being the actress/directors tour de force with such dark themes and an ultra physical role. I was not disappointed. Also, it reminds me a lot of the final photo of Regina Walters taken before being killed by trucker Robert Ben Rhodes. Who knows, if that guy would have carried on unchecked if he’d have gotten this insane.

typicalfilm- Meat

Meat (2010)

After a long festival run and who knows what else, I saw some buzzing around Meat. Lucky us, Artsploitation picked this wild little film up and it’s streaming on Vimeo as we speak. It’s not often that I fail to ‘get’ a movie. That’s not a bad thing. Remember the first time you watched Memento or Irreversible? That feeling (more so with Noé) of what the hell did I just watch coupled with questioning morality on top of having been visually dazzled and seduced into wanting to see it all over again right away? Well, perhaps I’m speaking entirely for myself but that is where I am with Meat. It’s not safe for work, and hell it may not be safe for your home. Not a horror film by any means, it does have a lot of sex and sexual situations and is very dark indeed. Enjoyed this one very much, and will enjoy it all over again as soon as possible.

typicalfilm – Blair Witch

blairwitchBlair Witch (2016)

After making a joke of wanting a screening pass in trade for the spammish ‘viral’ campaign attempted for this film, I entered a Rue Morgue contest on a whim and ended up with two passes. It was a lovely way to see the film, though I was surrounded by not-horror film fans who won their passes from radio stations and the like. The gentleman seated next to my guest was terrified from the middle of the film on. Every jump scare got him, nervous laughter not making a bit of difference as his hands floated up to his face to shield himself from the next tense sequence. A tiny bit of gore, a lot of screaming, and enough lore to push through had me just entertained enough. The last fifth or so was grand, though for the time spent up to then I found the cameras a little too kinetic. Not one to complain of shakiness or screen-vertigo my wish is to be able to tell who is holding the camera based on style and quality. Every actor held the camera like it was a scrap piece of duct tape they were trying to shake loose so the style wore thin fast. By the end, there were a handful of great scenes that did bring the gruesome artistry of horror film that I do love to found footage.

typicalfilm- Cronos

Cronos – 1993

What a debut! This Guillermo Del Toro gentleman is going to go places. Or, that is the sort of thinking I’d have had watching it when it came out. So many years later, and I’m likely just as impressed as I would be then. Not sure why it is so hard to find these films for a reasonable price locally and they are ghosts on digital rental sites. Considering how much love Del Toro pours onto Canada, you’d think Netflix and similar sites would push to host these for viewing. Either way, I’d have to thank Chris of BindTortureKast and Turning Point for facilitating my viewing of his older films – Devil’s Backbone and Cronos respectively. This was one of those wonderful vampire films that I adore. Far away from mainstream and Dracula, there is an element of alchemy that butts against this being placed in the very real world that I really like. From the first five minutes onward, I was captivated.

New HWA Releases – notes for authors

HWA-newreleases-2016-Aug19Hello wicked writer! This is a reminder I’ve posted on the Horror Writers Association facebook page, to submit your upcoming releases for the newsletter, member’s books gallery on horror.org and the side-scrolling gallery of amazing horror awesomeness that is on the main site! Next month’s releases are complied by the 15th, but you can submit now for books coming out anytime after and I’ll post them as time creeps toward the street date.

The form mentions the turnaround time, though rest assured, I’ve been able to post on a near-weekly basis for a while now. It’s volunteer based so the disclaimer stands but I do aim for the posting to be up within a week of release.

Past releases may or may not make it in as some titles submitted came out too long ago so if it isn’t a reprint or new edition, the room is best used for upcoming work.

Thank you!
