typicalfilm – Oct 12 – Eden Lake

Eden Lake (2008)

There was a little bit of homework being done with this, and I was turned on to the title by a filmmaker friend. Strange I’d never seen it as it’s really my kind of film. Truly great and daring filmmaking here! He’d prefaced this with words like ‘bleak’ and ‘hated’ as it seems the public didn’t like this one. I get it, everyone wants the good guys to win. Well, reality isn’t always as fun as fiction so once in a while we are going to see a tragedy. A real one. In the horror genre. Shocking, I know. Sarcasm has never been my strong suit but quoting people is ~ as Wes summed up by paraphrasing Capt. Jean-Luc Picard “sometimes you do everything right and still lose” which is Really Valuable thinking when entering a film like this… or waking up in the morning. If you watched Preservation (which I liked the idea of) then holy shit you really need to see this. Glad it crossed my radar!

typicalfilm – Oct 11 – Faces of Death

faces-of-deathFaces of Death (1978)

It was like I was 17 again, watching this. While not truly horror it contains some grisly images and to a larger extent, grisly ideas. When this was buzzworthy among my horror loving pals in high school, part four was the gem, and this the popcorn movie of the bunch. Well, it still is kind of a popcorn movie and while every speck of mystique has evaporated, it was nice to see it again.

typicalfilm – Oct 10 – The Greasy Strangler

tgsThe Greasy Strangler (2016)

Okay, so maybe not horror but it is fucking horrific! And not greasy enough. You can hear all about this one on episode 146 of BindTortureKast, my darling and most greasy podcast that lubricates the world! It’s been likened to Napoleon Dynamite for grown-ups and mostly rightly so. There is a large number of grown-ups I can see not being able to handle this. For the absurdity and sex that gets emulsified here, there is probably a pretty small audience. But hey, a small audience is good. Really well produced, it’s a nice break from shakycams and mumblecore for something wild and new.

typicalfilm – Oct 9 – Header

headerfilmHeader (2006)

Edward Lee did in fact release a film, The Walking Woman, not long ago. It’s one I need to re-watch for the novelty alone but I was not a pleased as I wanted to be. Lee is a great writer. Prolific, insane, gory and perverse, I’d wanted his film to be all that. Well, at least we still have Header. This was a surprise, since I’d stopped by The Turning Point to browse, and this was behind the cash waiting for me still in it’s wrapper with new disc smell and everything. Not for those of weak constitution as it has a really wild concept, but left the seasoned gore-hound and avid Lee reader in me wanting. This is one of those books that people are sore to recommend to friends and quick to point to as the sickest novel ever. The film, while B-horror for sure, is a perfect companion to the book.

typicalfilm – Oct 8 – Phantasm Ravager

phantasm_ravagerPhantasm Ravager (2016)

Though technically watched the day before, I figured I’d slot it here since on Saturday I watched the wonderful Blood Rage for the upcoming Dead Air episode. This was some kind of Dead Air goes to the movies event, as Wes and I high-tailed it to the Mayfair for the premiere. Wonderful stuff, and one not to be missed for the wizened Phantasm fan. With the fun extra at the beginning, newbies will bet a primer so there is no true need to see the previous four films, but hey, it’s October – if you haven’t indulged you really ought to. A very enjoyable finale, and by far the bloodiest entry yet! Rest in peace, Mister Scrimm.

typicalfilm – Oct 7 – Rob Zombie’s 31

31_film_poster31 (2016)

Damn good thing this was crowd-funded, since I’d have hated to see studio control or too many hands in the pot here. For all the whining people do about RZ films, I enjoyed this a hell of a lot and if you could delete prejudice I think more people would have fun with it too. Sherry Moon works really well, as do all the cast and the clown-heads especially. I liked Sex-Head quite a bit, and not being a Harley Quinn fan I didn’t really see as much of a parallel as reported but likened them to Rocky and Columbia out of all the horror shows. Doom-Head was all kinds of fun, so I got my fill of threatening characters in weeping, smudged clown make-up for sure. Oh yeah, and chainsaws!

typicalfilm – Oct 6 – Clowntown

Clowntown (2016)

It wasn’t even the recent clown news that got me excited to watch this, but it sure didn’t hurt either. Being a life-long fan of Shakes The Clown, and never really ‘getting’ coulrophobia, the idea of mad clowns run amok appealed to me. Having watched Clownhouse and Clown in the past year and 31 recently, it’s like I can’t get enough.

This one had been on my radar for quite some time so being able to see it for my October viewing was a real treat. It’d be a trick for those who don’t like clowns, and don’t think they’re fucking funny, or those who can’t stomach a B-horror and would rather the next Blumhouse gig, but this one holds a fine storytelling sensibility, decent effects and setting, plus once hell of a genuinely creepy main villain. It’s a clown eat kid world, and from where I sit, there just a’int enough damn clowns.

typicalfilm – Oct 5 – Abbatoir

Abbatoir (2016)

This is doing the festival and limited theatre circuit now and though I haven’t heard much, there are other fans just as curious as I to see this. It seems this passion project could have used a little more… something, I’m not sure what, but having that uneasy feeling that there is something missing here actually works along with the story. The last third is visually fun, with hauntings at every turn. Meeting our female lead to start, sort of sets one out of time so I can see fans of retro noir and kitsch culture liking this a lot. I was certainly drawn to the idea of an obsessed reporter tracking down a ghost house!

typicalfilm – Oct 4 – Deadgirl

Deadgirl (2008)

While not the biggest fan of this the first time I watched it, in light of the Ottawa Zombie Walk I decided to give it another go. I’m still more uncomfortable with the lead characters trashing the place in the opening sequence than I am with anything further that ensues. This may be what people (wrongly) expect from the title The Corpse of Anna Fritz, but with a title like Deadgirl you know what to expect… since it’s not billed as a comedy. This from the girl who was disappointed that So I Married An Axe Murderer was indeed a comedy. The only likeable person in this film is the dead girl and in that, the filmmakers succeeded brilliantly, so it serves as a film study on how to create focus and lead an audience with mealy rotted carrots, but also serves as a study on public backlash. The dead girl herself is wonderful, so it was worth it to hang out with her again.
