Nikolay Nikanorovich Dubovskoy (Russian: Николай Никанорович Дубовской; 17 December 1859, Novocherkassk — 28 February 1918, Saint Petersburg) was a Russian landscape painter, associated with the Peredvizhniki. Together with Isaac Levitan, he helped create what came to be known as the "Landscape of Mood".

An AI imagines a train ride

From kottke.org:

Damien Henry trained a machine learning algorithm with a bunch of videos recorded from train windows. Then, to test what it had learned, he asked the algorithm to make an hour-long video of a train journey — it began with a single frame and guessed subsequent frames as it went along. The video shows the algorithm getting smarter as it goes along…every 20 seconds the video gets a little more detailed and by the end of the video, you get stuff that looks like trees and clouds...

The Infinite Now

The Infinite Now from Armand Dijcks on Vimeo.

Over the past months I've been working with Australian photographer Ray Collins to bring his amazing oceanscapes to life in the form of cinemagraphs, a blend between photography and video. Each cinemagraph is created from one of Ray's stills, and sets it in infinite motion, making a unique moment in time last forever.

These cinemagraphs inspired André Heuvelman from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra to get together with pianist Jeroen van Vli...

Chick Corea & Gary Burton: Tiny Desk Concert

June 13, 2016 by SURAYA MOHAMED • Sometimes big-name artists need special attention. But in this case, it wasn't because they've been jazz pioneers and innovators since the 1960s and are considered to be founding fathers of jazz fusion, not to mention two of the most important jazz figures performing today. It's not because they've collectively recorded more than 100 albums and won 29 Grammy Awards. The agitation was because both of their instruments couldn't fit behind Bob Boilen's Tiny Des...

Thomas Hardy - Unknowing

WHEN, soul in soul reflected,

We breathed an æthered air,

  When we neglected

  All things elsewhere,

And left the friendly friendless

To keep our love aglow,

  We deemed it endless…

  —We did not know!

When, by mad passion goaded,

We planned to hie away,

  But, unforeboded,

  The storm-shafts gray

So heavily down-pattered

That none could forthward go,

  Our lives seemed shattered…

  —We did not know!

When I found you, helpless lying,

And you waived my deep misprise,

  And swore me, dying...
