Don't fall into the trap of thinking your work is perfect the first time, and don't be afraid of seeking (and taking!) outside critiques. That being said, don't let editing bog you down. Try to write and edit a little bit each day --- that is the only way to move forward.(less)

I keep a notebook split into two sections --- Plot and Questions. When I come up with an idea for my story, I put it into the Plot section. Anytime I have a question (no matter how trivial), I write it down in the Question section. That is very important because sometimes I'll come up with a great plot idea, but five or six small problems will occur to me. Rather than ignoring the problem or storing them in my brain to address later, I write them down as I think of them as a Question. That frees my brain to focus on the plot and ensures that I don't forget to plug any plot holes. When I think of the answer for a question, I put it in Plot and check off the corresponding Question. Try it! :)(less)
