The Wolfstone

Just finished listening to "The Wolfstone" by Medwyn Goodall, released by Medwyn Goodall Music.
I have long been a fan of Medwyn Goodall when I discovered his CD "Comet" back in the late 1990s in the music section of the Barnes & Noble near where I live, and I have faithfully acquired all his releases ever since he launched his independent music company, Medwyn Goodall Music.
"The Wolfstone" is another excellent release in Medwyn's Celitic music in which he uses the Irish Flute, Tin Whistle, Uillean Pipes, Violin, Dulcimer, ancient drums, Choir, Viking & Celtic voices, Guitar, and Keyboards to weave a tale of centuries ago in magical glory.
My favorite tracks on this CD are "The River Folk," "Earth Mother Rising," "Song of the Wilderness," and "The Wolf Stone."
HIGHLY RECOMMENED!
TEN STARS!

Major Matt Mason Moon Mission

Just finished reading "Major Matt Mason Moon Mission" by George S. Elrick, published by Whitman Books as part of their Big Little Book line back in 1968.
As frequent readers of my reviews here on Facebook, Goodreads, and other social media sites may recall that I started what I call my "Great Re-Reading Project of Favorite Books from my Youth." Unlike previous books in this on-going project of mine, I did not originally buy "Major Matt Mason Moon Mission" at Michelle's Bookstore in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Mom bought me this book at Roses Department Store. For some odd reason Big Little Books were usually not sold at bookstores, they were usually sold in the toy section at department stores. I got my reading copy on eBay.
Frequent readers of my reviews may also recall that I was "kicked out" of The Big Little Book Club of America for daring to review reading copies of Bronze/Modern Age era Big Little Books. When I posted the first review of a Big Little Book on The Big Little Book Club of America's Facebook page, I was blocked and attempts to renew my annual membership were returned, so I stopped trying. After all insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different result.
What makes "Major Matt Mason Moon Mission" unique among all the Big Little Books ever published is that it is the first and only Big Little Book based upon a children's toy. And "Major Matt Mason Moon Mission" was written by one of the proficient authors of the last and modern Big Little Book line by Whitman Books. So in addition to the popular action figures in the Major Matt Mason line featured in Big Little Book, some of the accompanying toys are also featured in this Big Little Book as well.
What also makes "Major Matt Mason Moon Mission" intriguing is that Elrick makes use of lunar caves and underground lunar lava tubes as potential habitats where astronauts can use for shelter. Also of interest is how Elrick envisioned lunar greenhouses and habitats for livestock for food.
Also intriguing is the introduction, for this book only, of Lt. Jo Ann Harvey, a psychiatrist who is studying the effects of long term isolation and hibernation on astronauts, with a focus on her brother Captain Otto Harvey who is volunteering at a distant outpost on the moon. While Elrick does a deft glossing over, remember this book was published in the late 1960s when NASA had no women in the astronaut corps, it is implied that Jo Ann was the officer of the day on the moon base, making her in charge of the daily operations. Don't worry though, Jo Ann is shown applying lipstick at the end of her shift to establish that despite her short haircut that she is still a woman.
So when Captain Harvey ceases all communication with the main moon base, Major Matt Mason and Jo Ann head out on a rescue to mission to determine what has happened to the missing astronaut and soon find themselves in an underground maze on the run an impossible creature under the influence of an alien intelligence,
What surprised me in this Big Little Book is the scientific accuracy - for the time and the reading level of this book. I used to be a substitute teacher and while I read this book when I was eight years old, I honestly do not know if an eight year old could read or comprehend this book today because of the complexity. Think about that and ponder the sorry state of the American education system that cares more about creating divisions then actual education.
Great Fun!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The Hanger On Drops In

Just finished reading "The Hanger On Drops In" by Birke Duncan, published independently.
Now as frequent readers of my reviews here on Facebook, Goodreads, and other social media platforms may recall, I am always forthcoming when I am reviewing the works of friends. Although Birke and I have never met in person, we are friends and Birke is one of my minions - actually Birke is #3 in my minion corps. Prior to meeting Birke on Facebook, I enjoyed and reviewed his original radio dramas that were available on CD through ZBS Productions. Oh yes, Birke did send me a review copy.
"The Hanger On Drops In" is a whimsical take on the screwball department store drama/comedies of the 1930s with a slightly modern twist. It was originally published in "The Saga of Krait Hally & Other Strange Tales" back in 2014.
James Western is the narrator of this mystery which centers around how and why Rolly Harris tumbled off the fourth floor railing and onto the ground floor of the Bruce Department Store. As James flashes back to the events leading up to Rolly's plunge, events start to unfurl and motivations may reveal plots and counter-plots, wheels-upon-wheels, leading up to a shocking conclusion.
Great Fun!

Vision of Eden

Just finished listening to "Vision of Eden" by Bart Hawkins, released by Spotted Peccary Music..
Eden and the fall from grace that Eve and Adam experienced when they gained knowledge has always been a greatly debated topic among Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and other world religions with similar creation myths. What many armchair religious scholars tend to overlook is that Adam willingly ate the apple that his second wife - Eve - offered him. The demon Lilith was actually Adam's first wife, and she never tempted him with the knowledge that the apple from the Tree of Life and Knowledge offered to anyone who ate it's fruit. Think about that. Lilith was never approached by or tempted by the serpent's words. Adam had dominion over his first wife. He did not have dominion over Eve, his second wife, who was equal in innocence and command over all of Eden as he was. Adam's act of eating the apple was an act of the love and trust he had for Eve. He was willing to join her in death.
Now here where my prejudices will kick in. Most Christians and Muslims rarely do a deep dive in the complexities of the Eden mythos. They can't get beyond man's fall and original sin. Perhaps the true story of Eden can be seen as an act of parental love of a father who is willing to let his children suffer the consequences of their actions in order to let them grow and experience life, Perhaps Eden is about owning up to mistakes and moving on.
Bart Hawkins takes listeners on the more traditional Christian approach to the promise of, the fall from, and the hope of regaining some sense of paradise lost. In the liner notes, Hawkins, if he wrote them, seems to take a approach to Eden that is grounded in the Kabbalah and New Age Mysticism. His musical vision of Eden is a compelling one. I definitely enjoyed all five tracks on this CD: "Garden of Grace, "Orbital Eccentricity," "Sidewinder," "Descent Into Forbidden Fruit," and "Dragonfly Speaks."
Highly Recommended.
Five Stars.

The Rise and Reign of the Mammals - A New History From the Shadow of the Dinosaurs to Us

Just finished reading "The Rise and Reign of the Mammals - A New History From the Shadow of the Dinosaurs to Us' by Steve Brusatte, released by Mainer Books.
I greatly enjoyed reading Brusatte's "The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs" a few years back, so I eagerly looked forward to reading his followup about the age of life after his sweeping history of how dinosaurs evolved, thrived, and faded into extinction. Brusatte has written a sweeping history of how mammals evolved during the reign of dinosaurs and how mammals filled the void after the asteroid impact that wiped out the terrible thunder lizards. He deftly explores how changes in climate caused a majority of the extinctions of mega-fauna, and how migration and continental drift brought mammals to every ecological niche here on the planet.
A comprehensive natural history.

On Arcturus VII

Just finished reading "On Arcturus VII" by Eric Brown, released by Newcon Press.
Reminiscent of the planetary adventure romances of the late Jack Vance, "On Arcturus VII" is a novella the explores the combined sense of guilt and loss retired pilot and explorer Jonathan James lives with in the aftermath of the tragedy that occurred on Arcturus VII where his actions resulted in the loss of the life of the woman he loved. While James lives comfortably in a self-imposed exile, he's tempted out of his retirement when Santor Vakhodia approaches him for a private rescue mission back to Arcturus VII where a lost generation colony ship has crash landed after centuries of travel. Only everyone on this mission is hiding dark personal secrets and James is keeping a secret about the planet that could spell doom for two intelligent races.
Classic Space Opera in the Jack Vance tradition.
Highly Recommended!

"The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Poet of Death & Other Mysteries"

Just finished listening to "The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - The Poet of Death & Other Mysteries" by Jim French Productions, released by Radio Spirits.
While I am happy that Radio Spirits has a five year contract to release collections of the original radio programs produced by Jim French Productions, I do wish that Radio Spirits would include a brief booklet in each of their collections of the late Jim French's radio shows that captured the history of the various programs including recollections from the surviving performers. I think Radio Spirits is missing a great opportunity to help preserve the history of a radio drama production company that survived and thrived well decades past the end of the Golden Age of Radio. Yes, the history is preserved in part on the French's Imagination Theatre banner on the Internet, Radio Spirits in my opinion is grievously dropping the ball here when it comes to helping preserve this unique chapter in radio drama history.
For example, I believe it was John Gilbert who originally portrayed Sherlock Holmes in "The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," and this collection highlights episodes from his tenure. It would have been beneficial to learn Gilbert's backstory and how he was select to play the Great Detective.
Note: I am a firm believer in full disclosure. Years ago Radio Spirits banned me from posting reviews of their collections on their Facebook page - which was their right to do - because I criticized the poor condition of the collections that had arrived to me at that particular time. Nothing like getting a late night call from Mark Tepper, the then president of Radio Spirits, who yelled at me. [I still have the email I received from him afterwards when he tried to reach out to me, along with the cell phone number he called me from at that time.] I am happy to say that Radio Spirits has improved the quality of their products and customer service since 2015.
And also in the interest of full disclosure, although I have never personally met him, I am friends with Lawrence Albert here on Facebook - though he is not a member of the public Audio Drama page I have here on Facebook. Lawrence Albert has portrayed Dr. Watson for, I want to say at least two decades, but I'm not exactly sure of the length of time he has spent in the role - another reason why a historical booklet would be great.
Now as a side note: Dad, along with Mom, loved listening to Sherlock Holmes audio dramas and movies, but for some reason when I was a teenager he was strongly opposed to me reading the original Sherlock Holmes stories by Conan Doyle because the stories featured Holmes' use of drugs. I think he was afraid that I might use drugs because a "smart" man - albeit fictional - used drugs. Dad could go off on strange tangents and that apple didn't fall far from the tree - I do too.
Lawrence Albert is a great Dr. Watson who adds the right amount of steadfastness and brevity to the role of the Great Detective's faithful companion. John Gilbert gave Holmes a sense of quiet and contemplative maturity with just the right amount of dysfunctional anti-social snark.
My favorite episodes in this collection are: "The Secret of The Five," "The Adventure of the Mind Reader," "The Adventure of the Painted Leaf," "The Billingsgate Horror," "The Adventure of the Bishop's Ring," and "The Adventure of the Samovar."
Another STELLAR collection of "The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" from Jim French Productions.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
TEN STARS!

Jack Benny - War Days

Just finished listening to "Jack Benny - War Days" released by Radio Spirits.
During the Second World War, it was common for Hollywood stars who had their own radio and television shows to visit various military bases on the Homefront and abroad to uplift the morale of the fighting men and women stationed there. In fact, Tenor Denis Day was drafted into the Navy during his time on the Jack Benny Show and was granted a hiatus from the show so that he could fill his legal obligations to serve his country in a time of war. He was temporarily replaced by Larry Stevens who filled in temporarily for him until his tour of duty was over with. For those who may be too young to remember, men who just turned 18 were legally required to register for the draft - I did so in 1980. Mom went with me when I registered at the post office at Camp Lejeune and the postman on duty at the time made a show of blowing the dust off a stack of draft registration cards at the time. On a side note, my friend Annette, who graduated the same year as me, made a big production of registering for the draft too because I did. Apparently I found out years later that she blamed me for ruining her life because I never realized that she wanted me to date her. I considered her just as a friend, plus she was dating a Marine at the time. If truth be told, I never thought of her as nothing more than a friend, who later, let's be nice and say that I hope she finally is living the life she deserves and that I'm glad I was never part of it.
Yes, sometimes I go off on tangents in these reviews, but a book, movie, music, and audio drama CD can stir up memories.
What makes the Jack Benny Show so enduring after nearly a century is that it is a master class of absurd realism where episodes can go off the rails with delicious hilarity.
My favorite episodes in this collection are: "The Horn Blows At Midnight," "Captain O'Benny," "Hollywood Canteen," "Jack Recalls His African Trip," "From Camp El Toro, California.
Classic Comedy Fun that is an auditory delight!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
TEN STARS!

"Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles"

Just finished watching "Frankenstein Jr. and The Impossibles" by Hanna-Barbera, released by Warner Brothers.
During the mid-1960s, Hanna-Barbera created a unique series of Saturday morning cartoon series that were two-in-one shoes that featured two separate cartoon heroes in separate adventures in separate episodes.
Frankenstein Jr. featured the adventures of boy genius Buzz Conroy who built the super robot he named Frankenstein Jr. and together they save the world from various super villains
The Impossibles were a group of rock and roll musicians who were actually super heroes with unique powers who worked for a mysterious government organization bent on protecting the United States and the rest of the world. The Impossibles were a deliberate spoof of the super hero genre and how they got their powers, met, and formed a rock-and-roll band were never explored.
Great classic cartoon fun!

"The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch - Season Two"

Just finished watching "The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch - Season Two" released by Lionsgate.
The Skinwalker Ranch in Utah has a long history of reported UFO/UAP sightings, cattle mutilations , and unusual activity, and based on the extreme popularity of "The Curse of Oak Island" and "Ancient Aliens" it was only natural that the History Channel would create a new program based on the alleged paranormal activities on a large ranch in Utah.
Now in it's third season, "The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch" is enjoying popularity and a loyal viewership.
Is Skinwalker Ranch actually a hotbed of paranormal activity? Unusual activity doesn't necessarily mean supernatural activity. Yes, the intense cold spots at Homestead Two are unusual and it was odd that it was brought about by a Rabbi's chanting a prayer in Hebrew at night, but the results were not repeatable.
There really is nothing mysterious about Skinwalker Ranch due to it's elevation - a little over 5,000 feet above sea-level so unusual radiation levels wouldn't be unusual. As for the mysterious 5,000 foot level above the ranch, an equipment malfunction on a helicopter - a radar altimeter - while alarming, isn't unusual.
"The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch" is interesting to watch, but there's really no hard evidence of portals leading to other worlds and/or dimensions.
Recommended.
Three Stars.
