The Doctor and Dancing

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

When you think of Doctor Who, you could be excused if one of the first things to pop into your mind wasn’t dance, but this month’s issue of ‘Dance Today’ plans to change your mind about that.

The article, written by Zoë Anderson, gives a look at how dance has been a part of the show’s heritage since its inception, whether we have noticed it or not, from Terry Nation’s observations of dancers movements and its influence on the final design of everyone’s  favorite diabolical pepper pots through to the modern dancers like new series creature performer Paul Kasey who is interviewed in the issue and how their profession has played a big part in shaping many of the shows most iconic creatures and their movements.

Having thought about this for a while it does seem to be something that has been overlooked by fans for a long time, just like the need to have actors rather than extras in the costumes of the Daleks, so it would seem obvious that you would need people with practiced poise and balance you can count on to be able to master a specific walk or shamble, with possibly limited visibility if any at all and still hit stage marks.

As such this article could well be quite informative and eye-opening.

Do you think there is more room for investigation into this? Should Strictly have a Whovian themed episode? As always leave us a comment below and fill us with your thoughts.

The issue is available in print or digital form from www.dancing-times.co.uk.

Moffat As Intrigued By Doctor Who Casting As Fandom

James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

You can be as professional as you like, but if you’re a fan: you are a FAN. And Moffat is no exception. Doctor Who’s current Big Cheese admitted in an interview with Broadcast Magazine that, despite being the man with final decision, he was as absorbed by the rumours as the rest of us…

If I hear people on the radio talking about Doctor Who, I perk up. When they were speculating about the new Doctor, I found myself getting drawn into the rumours even though I knew it was my job to cast him.

But this is to expected. If you’re going to be any good at casting the best role in TV, you should be someone who gets excited by it. Every suggestion, every rumour and every list of bookies’ favourites is like a casting proposal. Doctor Who fans are used to using their imaginations for the suspension of disbelief the show demands from the moment the reality-bending opening titles roll. And if you can believe that Hartnell’s wisened, silver-haired Doctor is the same person as Smith’s lolloping tweedy student, then it’s a small step to imagine anyone as the Doctor.

As it is I’m over the moon with Moffat’s choice of Peter Capaldi for our next cosmic hero, though For years I’ve thought Bill Nighy would’ve been a wonderful Doctor and I had a lot of fun imagining him in the role. But how about you – which actors (of the male or female persuasion) would turn the head of your inner casting director?

Day Of The Doctor Minisodes Confirmed?

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

It would seem that the BBFC has let the cat out of the bag a little early!

While we knew we were going to get an initial Day of the Doctor treat at the upcoming Children in Need event, we now have a little more inclination as to what we might be seeing. According to information on the BBFC web site, two different minisodes have been classified and attached to the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of the 50th anniversary special: The Last Day and The Night of the Doctor.

The Last Day is slated to run just shy of 4 minutes and has no additional information attached to the description (although, Time War anyone?). The Night of the Doctor is set to run for almost 7 minutes and features David Tennant and Matt Smith (Note: at the time of writing, the BBFC page for this mini-sode has gone dark… Coincidence? I think not!). It’s anyone’s guess at this point as to what the minisodes will actually contain, but with only 11 days until Children in Need and 19 until the 50th, the wait is almost over!

What do you think we’re going to get in these mini-sodes? Anyone still holding out for a McGann regeneration sequence?

(H/t, Rich)

The Day of the Doctor Official Synopsis!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor, airs this month. (I know! This month!)

Starring Matt Smith and David Tennant as Doctors Eleven and Ten, Jenna Coleman as Clara, Billie Piper as Rose and John Hurt as… someone, here’s the official synopsis:

The Doctors embark on their greatest adventure in this 50th anniversary special.

In 2013, something terrible is awakening in London’s National Gallery; in 1562, a murderous plot is afoot in Elizabethan England; and somewhere in space an ancient battle reaches its devastating conclusion. All of reality is at stake as the Doctor’s own dangerous past comes back to haunt him.

Written by Steven Moffat

Directed by Nick Hurran

Executive produced by Steven Moffat and Faith Penhale

Produced by Marcus Wilson

It certainly ties in with some of the hints we’ve heard (though I won’t detail them here, in case spoilerphobes never trust me again – so if you want to find out, search Kasterborous!). Hurran’s a stunning director, having helmed beautiful episodes like The Girl Who Waited and The Angels Take Manhattan.

Anyone else getting really excited now?!

Doctor Who at the BBC Volume 8: Lost Treasures

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Last month, Doctor Who at the BBC Volume 8: Lost Treasures was released. This is a 2-CD set of rare and hard-to-find radio programme interviews with many important people involved in Doctor Who‘s production through the years.

From the BBCShop description of Volume 8:

“A brand new volume of Doctor Who-related interviews and features from the BBC archives, encompassing 50 years of the nation’s favourite sci-fi adventure series. This journey through the archives features interviews with several of the actors to have played the Doctor, including Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith, as well as past companions, producers, sound designers and many more.”

The featured companion clips include Lalla Ward, Nicholas Courtney, Karen Gillan, and Jenna Coleman. Behind-the-scenes interviewees include the legendary Delia Derbyshire, Pennant Roberts, and recent showrunners Russell T. Davies and Steven Moffat.

Each CD runs about an hour and promises to have some material almost as exciting as the recently uncovered Patrick Troughton TV episodes:

“Much of the material has not been heard since its original broadcast, and several items came to light following an appeal to the public for off-air home recordings.”

Doctor Who at the BBC Volume 8: Lost Treasures

Written by David Darlington and presented by Louise Jameson, Lost Treasures has an RRP of £13.99 and is now available in old-fashioned bricks and mortar stores – but you might get the best price buying from Amazon for just £7.37.

If you’re not already feeling nostalgic with the 50th anniversary soon approaching, these CDs would definitely seem to be a good place to start!

Who-ology: The Official Doctor Who Miscellany – Reviewed

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Someone on the old Interweb once described Cavan Scott and Mark Wright’s new book Doctor Who: The Official Miscellany as merely an update on Justin Richards’ and Andrew Martin’s 1997 Doctor Who: Book of Lists, which detailed different aspects of Doctor Who’s past in fiction and nonfiction form. Whilst it’s true that some of the same subject matter is covered, Scott and Wright’s triumphant reimagining and delivery of the source material is a must for any Doctor Who fan old and new.

The Official Miscellany covers all aspects of Doctor Who’s first fifty years on and off screen alongside some truly wonderful illustrations (this reviewers two favourites included the Doctor’s family tree and an epic depiction of the Time War in full swing). Facts and figures are used with the unique wit and knowledge that one has come to expect from writers such as Wright and Scott, and absolutely no stone is left unturned.

Besides the usual facts and figures that an encyclopaedic Doctor Who fan would expect to find, it’s the new data that catches the attention. Want to know each Doctor’s height? The answer is there. Want to find out about the entire journey that the Doctor’s hand went on in order to become the part human Doctor we encountered in Journey’s End? You can look it up. Interested in which particular Doctor Who stories have name checked their own title mid adventure? It’s all waiting for you.

There may be some who are still shaking their heads at this point, thinking to themselves that they don’t need to know any of those facts or statistics. But it doesn’t stop there, little gems are dotted throughout the book that will make you think, make you gasp and make you wonder how you had never known about them, the research is impeccable and the result is unique.

In an age where information regarding Doctor Who is available at a few clicks of a button and addenda and errata are readily available for all to consume, Cavan Scott and Mark Wright have achieved something excellent; they’ve looked at the history of Doctor Who’s first five decades and offered the public something very new indeed. This is a fine effort that deserves your time and attention.

Doctor Who: The Official Miscellany has an RRP of £12.99 and is available at all good bookshops now - and you can order from Amazon now where it costs just £9.09!
