The Day of the Doctor Trailer Available Online! (Updated) [VIDEO]

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

I was disturbed last night by the news that one of the trailers for The Day of the Doctor has been leaked online; and I use the word “disturbed” in both senses. Surely a better hold could have been kept onto these trailers in Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary year?

Ah well, who knows how the BBC works?

So, in summary: one of the two reported trailers appeared online late Friday evening with Spanish (forgive me if it’s Portuguese!) voiceover and captions accompanying the very English dialogue of Matt Smith, John Hurt, Billie Piper, Jenna Coleman and more. Since then, the trailer has been officially published on the BBC’s official website.

And it is jaw-droppingly impressive.

Among the shocking scenes are this very spoilery image found on Twitter:

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Meanwhile, we’re currently adding screencaps from the trailer to our Facebook Page. Head on over there to see what’s what in the trailer in more detail.

The originally-released trailer with Spanish subtitles can be found below… we kind of like it ;)

That’s if you can’t wait a few hours…

Comic Con Trailer for Sunday Night?

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

We’ve already brought you news of a new Doctor Who trailer this weekend, and today the BBC has announced a second trailer – possibly from San Diego Comic Con – to air on Sunday evening!

Via the official BBC Doctor Who page we’ve learned that along with the brand new trailer at around 8pm BBC One on Saturday (just before Atlantis, but also available online), a second trailer will be released on Sunday:

Versions of this trailer have been seen at industry events but this is the first time it’s been released in its finished form, complete with the kind of special effects that help make The Day of the Doctor so epic.

From what we know, two events – SDCC and Edinburgh International Television Festival – have previously aired the trailer, although calling SDCC an industry event in this day and age is like describing a premier league match as a PFA members meeting.

Regardless, it seems likely that the infamous Comic Con trailer is finally going to be screened!

(Thanks to Nick and Joe)

Davison: I’m A Gay Icon, Thanks To Doctor Who

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Is the Doctor a gay icon?

In the last 8 years of the show’s history, the topic of the Doctor’s sexual identity is one that has come up more and more often. Most recently, Fifth Doctor Peter Davison spoke to Radio Times about the apparent lack of any sexual identity in the character of the Doctor and how he feels that had the show included more elements of romance and sexual tension during his tenure at the controls of the TARDIS, it would have been “easier to write a better [female] character”

Now we have some of his thoughts on the show’s gay fan base.

I’m not sure if I wasn’t a gay icon, actually…

Doctor Who does have – and all power to it – quite a big gay following. I don’t know if that’s because he’s a bit of an outsider I don’t know what that particular appeal is, but in terms of the fans that you meet along the way, as well as the straight ones there’s a gay fandom, so that’s fun.

In those days it was more difficult to be in that situation and I think the Doctor was something [gay people] could latch on to, as a slightly odd and out of place and not-quite-accepted character, and that had great appeal for them.

Having a character who suffers from the same struggles you face in your own life is what makes stories go from good to great and what really touches us. When those struggles are vastly different from what other people go through, finding someone or something to connect to is even harder and something to be cherished.

As a show that started out life as something meant to be educational, if one person is helped, then it’s done its job.

Kasterborous’ own James Lomond discussed all of what Davison had to say in a recent commentary.

(via Radio Times.)

An Adventure in This Week’s TV Guide!

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

In this week’s TV Guide, An Adventure in Space and Time is Matt Roush’s featured review… and he loved it!

He gives it an impressive 9/10 and especially points out how good David Bradley is. Alongside the article, there’s a great publicity photo of Bradley as First Doctor, William Hartnell standing between the TARDIS in the background and a BBC camera in the foreground. It’s really cool to see TV Guide give the docu-drama that kind of press and such a good review!

The Mark Gatiss-penned drama is set to air on Thursday 21st November in the UK on BBC Two, and Friday 22nd on BBC America, both at 9pm.

And you can find out more about An Adventure in Space and Time here on Kasterborous. We can’t wait!

Prisoners of Time #10 Out Now

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Just the other day, IDW Publishing released the newest issue of their Prisoners of Time comic book series. If you are not familiar with it, this is an ambitious 12-part maxi-series that features a different Doctor in each issue. The new issue, #10, features (of course) the Tenth Doctor and companion Martha Jones in an adventure to the Griffith Observatory in 1950s-era Los Angeles.

Written by David and Scott Tipton (IDW’s Star Trek and Angel comics) with what looks to be stunning art and likenesses by Italian illustrator Elena Casagrande (Hulk, True Blood), Prisoners of Time #10 will be one of the last issues of Doctor Who-related comics that IDW publishes.

Last summer, the company lost its Doctor Who license and their final Who-related comics will appear at the end of 2013. As an effect, longtime IDW Who-writer and fan-favorite Tony Lee recently announced on his Facebook page that he will be cutting back on his convention appearances, especially in 2014.

Prisoners of Time 10

It appears that the upstart Titan Comics company may be taking over the Who license next year.

IDW’s Prisoners of Time #10, with cover art by Francesco Francavilla, is available online and at your finer comic book establishments. The cover price is $3.99.

See a full preview of the comic at Comic Book Resources.

OFFSTAGE Presents: The Days Of The Doctor

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group are presenting The Days of The Doctor, a 50th anniversary spoof show, for one day only on November 16th 2013.

This unique show will be spoofing the 50th anniversary special before it’s even been shown! As group spokesman, Kasterborous‘ own Barnaby Eaton Jones says:

‘We’re pre-empting the half-centenary celebration…by staging our spoof of the episode BEFORE we’ve even seen it! You can’t get more topical than that!’

Fans can look forward to John Hurt’s Doctor as ‘The Storyteller’, with a focus on the new series but with some kisses to the past classic era.

The OFFSTAGE Theatre Group were well-known for putting on the first Doctor Who comedy shows to be written specifically for conventions and convention audiences. These ran from 2005 to 2007 and included specially-written cameos from Colin Baker in two of the shows. As Jones says:

‘We’ve been brought out of our retirement to regenerate again and to take hold of the TARDIS controls once more. So come with us on a silly journey to Gallifrey and beyond. We’re back and it’s about timey-wimey.’

The venue is The Cockpit Theatre, Avoncroft Museum, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire and there’ll be four performances during the day. For ticket details visit their official site.

1963: The Space Race and The Queen of Time Out Now

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

More Doctor Who fun comes courtesy of Big Finish this month as they release two new titles for the Sixth and the Second Doctor.

Continuing the loosely themed main range 1963 trilogy with The Space Race, written by Jonathan Morris, finds the Sixth Doctor and Peri find themselves smack bang in the middle of the Cold War and in the presence of a lady who may be far more than she seems:

November 1963, and the Soviet space programme reigns supreme. Having sent the first animals, then the first men beyond Earth’s atmosphere, now they’re sending a manned capsule into orbit around the Moon.

Just as Vostok Seven passes over into the dark side, however, its life support system fails. Only the intervention of the Sixth Doctor and Peri, adopting the identities of scientists from Moscow University, means that contact with the capsule is regained.

But something has happened to the cosmonaut on board. She appears to have lost her memory, and developed extreme claustrophobia. Maybe she’s not quite as human as she used to be…

Starring Colin Baker as the Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri, 1963: The Space Race is available now on CD for £14.99 or via download for £12.99

Continuing with their release of previously unmade adventures, Big Finish also offer this month Doctor Who – The Lost Stories: The Queen of Time.

The Queen of Time

This tale finds the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe outside of our Universe but you can guarantee they won’t be meeting House anytime soon:

Somewhere outside our universe, she is waiting.

A god-like immortal, living in a realm of clocks. The hours tick slowly by as she plots and plans. She is readying her trap. A trap for a very special man in a very special police box.

Hecuba has all the time in the world. But for the Doctor, time is running out.

This outline comes from writer Brian Hayles (The Ice Warriors) and is adapted by Catherine Harvey. Starring Frazer Hines as Jamie (whilst also supplying another fantastic Patrick Troughton impression) and Wendy Padbury as Zoe, The Queen of Time is available now on CD for £12.99 or via download for £10.99.

To order your copies visit Big Finish now.
