Capaldi In Single Season Shocker?
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Reports in today’s Daily Express indicate that incoming Time Lord Peter Capaldi has signed up to a single run of 13 episodes of Doctor Who, and no more.
However, Kasterborites, we’re hopeful that this is nothing more than tabloid mischief-making.
Running under the headline “Who’s Next? New Doctor Peter Capaldi may stay just 13 episodes” the evidence presented to back up the claim is pretty thin – in fact, it’s non-existent. Stating that the Twelfth Doctor will appear in the forthcoming Christmas episode, the Express continues:
Capaldi, 55, will star in two series of six episodes each before waving goodbye to the Timelord – or signing a new deal depending on how popular he has been.
Moffat, 51, confirmed that the former The Thick Of It star will be seen in 13 episodes next year.
(Steven Moffat’s “confirmation” appears to come from the recent Broadcast interview.)
As you can see, there is nothing here that stands as a direct quote. Furthermore, it is unlikely that an actor of Peter Capaldi’s stature would commit to more than one series at a time anyway.
So, cool your boots: we’ve still got at least a year of the Twelfth Doctor, so lets enjoy it before we start the doom and gloom of casting another actor, okay?

‘Who Are You Supposed To Be?’ Hits London in November!
Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
A light-hearted new comedy – Who Are You Supposed to Be - is set to perform at the Etcetera Theatre in London.
A new work by Australian writer Keith Gow, the play draws on real-life experiences from the world of fandom, and stars confirmed ‘geeks’ Cameron McEwan and Jennifer Lusk, (who met for the first time at a Serenity screening in Melbourne!)
As the play’s synopsis puts it:
The characters of Gene (McEwan) and Ash (Lusk) are wonderfully flawed, and their particular foibles allow the play to examine notions of masculinity, feminism, mental disorder, the perils of social media relationships and the fundamentals of human interaction. All under the playful banner of Doctor Who and Star Wars fandoms!
A meticulously-researched piece, the comedy’s lead actor – Cameron McEwan – is also the editor of the popular Doctor Who fan site, Blogtor Who! And it would seem the hard work has paid off, as the play has so far received a string of positive reviews from the likes of Cult Den and Broadway Baby, following its premier at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
For a chance to catch one of the Who Are You Supposed To Be? performances, check out the Etcetera Theatre’s website. Meanwhile, Kasterborous wishes the good Blogtor all the best with it!

Gatiss Prepares for Bad Fan Reaction to “Adventure”
Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Mark Gatiss has revealed he’s prepared for a negative reaction to An Adventure in Space and Time when the special one-off drama on the origins of Doctor Who airs later this month.
Writing Doctor Who, you don’t give a monkey’s [about giving diehard fans what they want]. You write it for your audience, not for the people who will watch it anyway.
I don’t mean to sound contemptible at all – I’m a fan so there are a lot of things that I want to nod to or embrace – but you can’t be ruled by that. Here, this is holy writ; they’re real people.
Stressing that the film is a drama rather than a documentary, Gatiss has previously stated that key players Donald Wilson and David Whitaker will not appear and that he’s “totally prepared for howls of protest.”
Dramatising real events is always something of a minefield, with the need to simplify events and depict composite characters to satisfy the needs of plot and limited screen time.
What do you think? Are you prepared to overlook some inaccuracies in the name of a good drama? Or should facts always come first?

Moffat Doesn’t “Get” Doctor Who Fans’ Comic Con Trailer Woes
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The last thing Doctor Who needed in its 50th anniversary year was division. Thanks to the reduced episode count and the infamous San Diego Comic Con exclusive trailer for The Day of the Doctor, however, division is what we’ve had.
While the rediscovery of The Enemy of the World and most of The Web of Fear has helped to placate some frustrations (along with the perpetually awesome BBC trailer for Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary) the SDCC affair – nay, debacle – has continued to bubble under the surface, along with disappointment that Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston won’t be appearing in The Day of the Doctor (not that we’d actually know at this point…)
So, surely Steven Moffat has some wise words of empathy for disappointed fans? Well, to be honest he’s largely been silent about these things, other than cryptically clueing us to keep the guesses coming until November 23d. For this, he is greatly respected; The Moff is doing his job in keeping us talking about the show.
However, a new interview in Broadcast magazine – out Friday, industry types – reveals that perhaps Steven Moffat doesn’t get it.
Comic Con has a history of screening exclusive material. I understand if people are feeling eager – but don’t you think it would have been a little bit early for everyone to see it? We were creating a buzz about it among the people who’d slept out all night for it.
This is going to get out, so let’s consider how fans dying to see the trailer are going to take these words.
Moffat considers SDCC “a little bit early,” but how many times have trailers for Christmas episodes aired at the end of a run, or coming series at the end of Christmas episodes during the RTD and early Moffat era?
The view from K Towers is that the now not-so grand Moff is making a rod for his own back in trying to justify the SDCC screening. With further analysis (and we’re Doctor Who fans – it’s what we do, right?!), it gets worse.
Take ”the people who’d slept our all night for it.” Does a Doctor Who fan, writer and showrunner really intend to say to you Kasterborite, dear Doctor Who fan, new and old, that the trailer was not for you unless you were one of an extremely select bunch of fans. An elite, if you will.
Surely not?! Surely over his youthful and adult years, Steven Moffat has experienced the same dismissal of his fandom as many other fans, has seen unpleasant cliques and groups develop and attempt to hijack the show’s fallow period as their own little kingdoms.
An elite?
What would the Doctor say? What would Davros say?
If you were a fan particularly unhappy about the SDCC trailer, expected the lack of Paul McGann and other classic Doctors in the 50th anniversary, how might you feel about a statement that seems to say “Deal with it, Whovian. It’s not your trailer - it’s someone else’s.”
Now, this isn’t our opinion. We’re extremely happy that Doctor Who‘s 50th anniversary trailer was used to create a buzz; we’re delighted that a small group of people – many of which weren’t even hardcore fans (due to the location, career of many attendees and the amount of time it takes to enthuse passionately about multiple shows) – were able to see something that the rest of us weren’t.
But I’m pretty certain a lot of fans aren’t too pleased, and that these new comments by Steven Moffat are going to be taken very badly in some circles.
Doctor Who has long had a culture of the people in charge being forthcoming in their relationship with the fans, going back to the John Nathan-Turner era, and to some extent beyond. Perhaps it’s time to bring this to an end, in the name of peace and sanity of fans and showrunner alike?

IN-CIN-ER-ATE! York Maze to Burn Giant Dalek for Bonfire Night!
jtbelliott is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
I’ve been re-watching a lot of Chris Eccleston recently and, from Rose’s job to the weapons factory on Villengard to Number 10 Downing Street (!), it’s striking how unconcerned the Ninth Doctor is with Blowing Stuff Up.
He may well then have sympathised with York local Guy Fawkes, everyone’s favourite arsonist, and delighted in hearing that York Maze owner Tom Pearcy will be replacing the traditional effigy with a 12ft (4m) high Dalek. Reasons Pearcy,
Throughout the year at York Maze we have been staging events to mark the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. The 6th Doctor, Colin Baker, was here in the summer to officially open the giant Dalek-shaped maze. We thought it would be fitting to end the year by giving the Daleks a good roasting.
The massive, wooden Skarosian was lifted into position on top of the giant 30ft (10m) high bonfire at York Maze, ready for York’s Bonfire Night celebrations on Tuesday 5th November. Moffat: Capaldi Not A “Quirky young man”

Steven Moffat has chatted this week about the casting of Peter Capaldi, and how he aimed to avoid another young actor as the 12th star of Doctor Who.
Put simply, they wanted a change; think of it as a reverse Peter Davison, if you will…
We couldn’t have had another quirky young man because Matt had nailed the part. Peter’s already a bit of a national treasure, an incredibly skilled, fine actor. As most people have realised, the moment you think of him in the part, you find it hard to think of anyone else.
Every time I was at a TV do and Peter was there, he’d come over to talk about Doctor Who and he was the first to congratulate Matt. I started thinking: what if that genius actor might actually say ‘yes’?
He’s right, of course. Although looking at the image above, perhaps we’re going to get a quirky old man instead…?
But what of the children, Steven? Won’t someone think of the poor, young souls who will cry when their Doctor, Matt Smith, melts away? Moffat recalls his own initial dislike of Jon Pertwee, before observing:
I sympathise with the kids who’ve grown up with Matt Smith. It’s like when you move home and your mum and dad say, ‘You’ll make new friends’.
I always resented the intruder but then after a while, I forgot there had been one before him.
Have you had trouble adjusting to a new Doctor (in the show, we mean, not at your local surgery)? Let us know below!
