8-Bit Doctor Who Theme!

Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

For those of us of a certain age, we’ve grown up with technology evolving and changing right along side us. Many of us grew up in the age when arcade games made the leap from big machines that could only run one game to consoles that could play many different games, from PacMan, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders, to Super Mario Brothers and Duke Nukem.

To us, the 8-bit sound files of the ghosts catching PacMan and the Super Mario Brothers theme song are familiar sounds, ones that bring back childhood memories of our favourite games and times spent with our friends trying to beat each other’s game scores and the excitement that came when a new game had graphics better than any we’d ever seen before.

As happens with every generation, we reach a point when our childhoods are distant memories and we like to take nostalgic look back into our past. And as happens, newer generations look back at what was part of our childhoods and become enamoured of them, and the old becomes new again.

With that, I give you the Doctor Who theme song, 8-bit style.

(With thanks to Joe)

NZ Mint Releases Doctor Who Monsters

Danny_Weasel is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If you were one of the fine folk lucky enough to get your mitts on the commemorative gold or silver coins released for the 50th anniversary last year, or the equally impressive 11 Doctors collection then the news that this month sees the release of the first in a new set of commemorative coins from New Zealand Mint may be of interest to you… because this time, it’s the turn of the bad guys.

Following on from the success of last year’s collections, the NZ Mint has created the Monsters Collection and first out of the gate are the Daleks. A limited number of 5,000 Dalek coins are now on sale on the NZ Mint website, and they will be closely followed by the Weeping Angels, the Cybermen, the Silurians and the Sontarans.

The selection of enemies was chosen by an online vote and according to New Zealand Mint Chief Executive, Simon Harding, they won’t be around for long as they have already had masses of interest and pre-orders for the collection.

So what do you think, worth grabbing early? Will you be getting the full set? Are you disappointed at the choice of villains on offer (personally I would have liked to see the Master in there). Speak to us below and share your two cents (see what I did there… I’ll get my coat).

Moffat on his Future as Showrunner

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Some will be looking forward to the day showrunner, Steven Moffat bids Doctor Who adieu. But I think a far larger amount of people are dreading that day.

In a Sherlock-focussed interview with Assignment X, Steven has talked about the nation’s two favourite shows and how he will sadly have to say goodbye to one of them:

“Eventually, I’ll stop doing Doctor Who, because it stops me doing anything else. But Sherlock doesn’t swamp my schedule, doesn’t swamp anyone. So I could imagine we’ll come back and do Sherlock fairly often for many years, rather than very often for a few years.”

Naturally, this is why Doctor Who has lasted 50 years. It moves on. And we’ve had some fantastic producers, brilliant script editors, incredible showrunners looking after that wonderful TARDIS, haven’t we?

Moffat, who has been running things since 2010 (well, sort of 2009, but shush), says he never knows how long he’ll stay:

“You never know that in advance. If we weren’t enjoying it, or we didn’t think there was anything good left to do, we’d stop, but we haven’t reached that point yet, is all we can say. I can envision just doing [Sherlock] for a while – for quite a while, possibly. The fact that we only do it occasionally means it’s not swamping anyone’s schedule.”

Remember Rule One though: Moffat Lies. He says he even knew how long Matt Smith would stay as the good Doc!

I don’t like this ominous talk. I genuinely don’t like the idea of Steven leaving any time soon – so let’s focus on what he recently told Doctor Who Magazine; that the next two series will be straight runs… which surely means that he’ll be spearheading them both!

(Thanks to DWTV.)

Here’s Matt Smith In a Deleted Scene From “In Bruges” [VIDEO]

Drew Boynton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

In Bruges was a 2008 film that starred Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson as two hitmen who get stuck in Bruges, Belgium. As the darkly-comedic story goes, the bickering pair are in the town awaiting orders from their creepy, psychopathic boss Harry, played by Ralph Fiennes.

In a deleted two-minute flashback scene, the young version of Harry is played by none other than the Eleventh Doctor himself, Matt Smith!

Looking very 1970s in a plain suit and long-ish hair, the young actor is seen sauntering through what appears to be a brothel, finding a woman who has been murdered (or gravely injured), and then travelling on to a police station to kill a police detective with a quick swipe of a sword.

As one can tell, the clip is extremely violent and graphic, and is definitely not suitable for younger viewers. It is fascinating to see Smith in this kind of non-Doctor Who element, and he seems confident and charismatic in the (very brief) role.

Matt Smith’s filming of his scene in In Bruges would have taken place after his appearances in Billie Piper’s The Sally Lockhart Mysteries and the short-lived series Party Animals, and just about a year before he was cast as the Doctor. It’s not every day that an actor would get to play a young Ralph Fiennes in a film, and having his scene cut from the story must have been very disappointing. But, as we all know, he went on to bigger and better things!

Kasterborites, are there any famous film roles that you think one of the Doctors would have been perfect for? In some alternate universe, are they watching David Tennant as James Bond or Matt Smith as Captain Jack Sparrow?

Would John Hurt Return to Doctor Who?

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

After his amazing role in The Day of the Doctor, wouldn’t it be great to see John Hurt back in Doctor Who, a triumphant return for the man who fought against the Daleks in the Time War,?

Red Carpet News caught up with the award-winning actor, and asked him if he’d like to return; he replied:

I can’t think for a second… You’re asking me to answer something which I can’t answer… But I can’t think there’d be any reason to do that.

It seems to come as a surprise to Hurt – who’s starred in V For Vendetta; Merlin; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; and Watership Down – so it might not be that he hasn’t considered coming back, but that the question came completely out-of-the-blue.

He’d probably recently been answering questions about the death of Philip Seymour Hoffman, who he worked with on the 2003 film, Owning Mahowny. So could this have just been a badly-timed question? He seemed very pleased with the reception he’d got from Whovians shortly after the 50th anniversary. Mind you, he probably thought of Doctor Who as a one-off thing, especially as he hadn’t realised how big it is.

Then again, there’s always that tweet

And even then, it’s not really up to him – look to the Moff for a final decision!

It might not be the answer we were hoping for – but at least he didn’t definitively say, ‘No More.’

There Are No Yeti On The Underground!

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

As iconic Doctor Who locations go, there is none more memorable for tapping into our everyday fear of what lies beneath than the London Underground.

Maybe it’s the perilous nature of hurtling yourself through narrow, nebulous tunnels reliant on a system of checks to keep you and your fellow passengers from being engulfed in darkness or the paranoia that accompanies sharing a confined space with strangers that signals (pun intended) what makes Doctor Who so special.

The everyday and the alien.

So it came as no surprise that the Underground doffed its collective cap to the Doctor as he celebrated 50 years of saving us from our collective fears, with this nod to the recently rediscovered  Second Doctor serial The Web of Fear.

Someone working at the Tube is clearly mistaken though; it’s not fear, no. The Yeti are down there! A malign intelligence controls them! Forget reaching Holburn, you may never see daylight again…

This service will be delayed…

(With thanks to Jonathan Lyle)

Paul and Sophie Go To The Ball

Jonathan Appleton is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

If you’re in Dorset this weekend you can catch Paul McGann and Sophie Aldred at the SF Ball convention in Bournemouth.

The event runs from 7th-9th February at The Carrington House Hotel, and promises a warm welcome at the “three day social experience”.

Other sci-fi guests of note include Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Marina Sirtis and Chris Barrie from Red Dwarf. A good line-up of guests connected to publishing is headed by novelist Robert Rankin.

Sophie has fond memories of filming Doctor Who in the Dorset area, which holds a special place in Who history as the location for the original series’ last ever scenes. She sums up the pressures of shooting on a tight schedule rather nicely:

It was due to be in Perivale but we ran out of time and so we had to find some bushes in Warmwell and went there instead.

The glamour of being in Doctor Who, eh? For more information and ticket details head to SFB Events.

Is Arthur Darvill Joining the UK Cast of Once?

Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Rumour has it that Doctor Who‘s very own Arthur Darvill, (alias Rory Williams), is set to join the cast of the West End musical Once. The hit production, penned by Irish playwright Enda Walsh, currently features Declan Bennett in the role of Guy, but Darvill is tipped to be taking over from Bennett when he leaves the part in March.

If the rumours are to believed, it wouldn’t be the first time Darvill has trodden the boards of the West End stage, having recently played Parry in the WhatsOnStage Award-nominated Our Boys in 2012.

Once has been performed at London’s Phoenix Theatre since it opened in April last year, and has now been extended until 4 July 2015. But whether Arthur Darvill will, indeed, be filling the boots of Guy remains a mystery.

What do you think, Whovians? Is anybody going to book on the off-chance…?
