Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer Coming Soon!

Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

The trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy is due to be released imminently – but will we see the delightful Karen Gillan, aka Amy Pond?

Gillan plays Nebula, a major villain in the film, so it’s likely that we’ll at least glimpse her in all her bald-headed glory. The first teaser image was unveiled at the tail end of 2013, but only featured the main team, comprising of Starlord, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon.

The trailer has been classified by the Alberta Ratings Board, and is listed as 2 minutes, 23 seconds long. There’ll probably a cut-down version for TV and is likely to be included in the tediously-long trailers section before Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which is released in the UK next month (yes, I’m exited after seeing that Superbowl trailer too!). But don’t worry; it’ll be all over the internet within a week or so…

Karen’s character, Nebula, made her debut in 1985, a citizen of the planet Luphom; in the Marvel comics, she’s not bald, so maybe this is artistic license on the part of director, James Gunn.

Guardians of the Galaxy will probably lead into Avengers: Age of Ultron, due in cinemas next year – which begins filming in Johannesburg, South Africa tomorrow!

Karen Gillan Gets Interview Wrong, Creates Surreal Masterpiece

Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Enter the world of Karen Gillan; former Doctor Who companion, upcoming baldy villainess in Guardians of the Galaxy and mad as a March Hare.

Attempting to drum up some publicity for the DVD release of Not Another Happy Ending – the quirkiest of quirky rom-coms about a depressed novelist who suffers cataclysmic writers block thanks to an onset bout of happiness – The Guardian sent the lovely redhead some questions to give her an idea of what a potential interview might cover.

Instead of preparing with this new information, she just went ahead and answered them.

So here they are; welcome to Gillan’s Island – it’s bright, cheery and a little bit delightful:

You retweet photos from History In Pictures a lot. What moment from history would you most like to photograph?

ELVIS. In any capacity possible. Perhaps if I’m visiting a moment I could interact with him? I’d go to Prestwick airport and wait for him to touch down in the UK that one and only time.

You’ve made a film about a haunted mirror [2013’s Oculus] Does your character ever try to solve the problem by punching a mirror, like Kiefer Sutherland did in Mirrors?

My character knows the power of this particular mirror. No punch is a match for this creepy entity.

Complete this joke: ‘Knock Knock/ Who’s there?/ Dr…’

…Charles, I work with memory loss./Doctor charles who?/Oh no, this is worse than I thought.

Does Not Another Happy Ending have a happy ending?

Buy the DVD in February to find out. PUBLICITY!

Last time I saw you, you were panicking extensively about a flight you thought you’d miss. Did you miss it?

Which flight? This happens all the time. I always make it in the end though.

When you were bald, what sort of hat did you favour?

Those Scottish hat’s [sic] with the ginger hair poking out the sides.

Who’s your least favourite Doctor Who companion?

The worst Dr Who companion by far was Lassie. And yes, everyone says that dogs are the best companions but this thing NEVER LISTENED! Rummaged through the bins, left hair in a Dalek plunger. Ate my tiny reading glasses. I forget which episodes Lassie was in. But definitely her.

Not Another Happy Ending is available to buy now for £9.99 from Amazon.

Peter Capaldi Dressed as the Doctor… in 2009?!

Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Here’s a nice surprise for you that comes with free chuckles. Peter Capaldi, wearing an outfit not unlike his Twelfth Doctor attire, on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, back in 2009!

Appearing on the show to promote In the Loop, the made for cinema, international version of hit TV show The Thick of It (in which Capaldi played his most popular role to date, that of foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker), the presence of “the magician” is evident as is a sense of long-lost friendship – the pair were once in a band together.

Advisory note – there is discussion about drug taking in this clip.

(With thanks to STLShawn in the Kasterborous Forum!)

Perhaps This Doctor Who: Legacy Trailer Will Tempt You To Play?

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

As Whovians, we all know that the Doctor’s adventures in gaming have been spotty to say the very least.

When we reviewed Doctor Who: Legacy before Christmas, we encountered what may be the beginnings of some quality Who themed gaming; part puzzler, part RPG with loads of the Doctor’s companions in tow.

At an entry point of “free,” Legacy is a compelling mobile game and worth a quick download from your Google Play or iOS App Store.

In case you’re still on the fence, the BBC have release a brand new trailer for the game to help entice you into the fold. Click through above and let us know what you think; is the trailer enough to convince you to take the game for a spin? Or are you holding out for something a little more in depth?

Charley Pollard Gets Her Own Series!

Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Not many Doctor Who companions have been lucky enough to secure their own spin-off series, but Big Finish’s Charlotte Pollard is about to burst onto our speakers with a brand new set of solo stories!

Audio companion to both the Eighth and Sixth Doctors, Charley Pollard (played by India Fisher) is set to return in a four-part box set in May 2014, kicking off a brand new series of adventures for the former time traveller.

As the official synopsis puts it:

Charlotte Pollard’s adventures are over. She escaped death aboard the R101 and travelled in the TARDIS – but now in the service of the monolithic, unknowable Viyrans, their unending mission is stifling her. An encounter with would-be adventurer Robert Buchan, near the mysterious Ever-and-Ever-Prolixity, provides the opportunity Charley needs for escape…

So, the adventuress is abroad once more: meeting a lost expedition in uncharted forests, solving enigmas, and hoping beyond hope to see the people she misses most: her family. But Charley cannot run forever. The Viyrans know the power of the ‘Lamentation Cipher’ and they have a solution… for everything.

The new series will also star Michael Maloney as the Viyrans, alongside Nicholas Briggs and Jacqueline King –  as well as Sherlock‘s Louise Brealey! Big Finish has also teased that there will be “a couple more guests” that they’re “keeping up their sleeves for now.” Sounds intriguing!

The Charlotte Pollard Series One box set can now be pre-ordered from Big Finish.

Reviewed – 1963: The Assassination Games

Meredith Burdett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Almost 25 years later, the Seventh Doctor and Ace are finally reunited with Group Captain Gilmore, Rachel and Alison in 1963: The Assassination Games!

The Group Captain and his friend first appeared in 1988’s Remembrance of the Daleks and helped the Seventh Doctor fend off a whole bunch of Daleks in 1960’s London. Years later, 2012 to be exact, Big Finish bought Group Captain ‘Chunky’ Gilmore and his team back with Countermeasures, a singing sixties spy drama spin off from Doctor Who with a science fiction twist. Many say the Countermeasures team we know and love is actually the original template for UNIT but time will tell with that one.

With The Assassination Games, we get both Doctor Who and Counter-Measures in one political thriller. And what fun it is, complicated, listen-or-you’ll-fall-behind fun.

This tale takes Doctor Who to a slightly unfamiliar world, the world of politics. Some of you may disagree with that statement at this point. What about the Third Doctor’s entire era? Was it not dripping with political characters being talked down to by the Doctor, was there not constant military negotiations between the Brigadier and his commanders that caused endless problems for the Doctor? What about the Time Lords? A society dripping with political problems, intrigue and constant one-upmanship.

Yes, I agree with you but let’s not forget what came first in many of those stories, the Science Fiction. For every disgruntled politician, authority figure or Gold Usher Gallifreyan there was an Auton, The Master, a Sea Devil, an Axon or an Omega.

This is by no means the beginning of a criticism of this adventure, it’s a fine political thriller featuring the Seventh Doctor and Ace and that’s exactly the point. Whilst it’s wonderful to have the whole team from Remembrance of the Daleks back together, The Assassination Games is not a Doctor Who adventure despite what it says on the label, this is a Counter-Measures story where the Doctor and Ace pop up to help. This is the story of Group Captain Gilmore, Rachel Jensen and Alison Williams and what they did after they first met the Doctor and discovered that there was a bigger Universe out there then they could ever have imagined.

1963-assassination

Writer John Dorney has used this to his advantage however, while this is the final in the lose trilogy of stories set in 1963 to celebrate the year that Doctor Who started its journey on television screens to become The Best Show Ever Made, this story also serves as the bridge between Remembrance of the Daleks and Counter-Measures series one. This is a great stopgap between the past and the future and serves Doctor Who well in its run of stories helping to honour the show’s 50th anniversary.

Pay attention, keep up and you’ll have a great time with this tale, in fact this reviewer is going to label it his favourites in the 1963 trilogy.

Now if only they could get the Doctor and Ace to appear in one of the future Counter-Measures box sets, as part of a larger scale story, is that even possible…?

Eddie Robson: “It’s Easy to Take Tennant For Granted”

Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.

Acclaimed BBC Radio and Big Finish Writer, Eddie Robson recently spoke with the DoctorWhoThing blog about his writing career and obsession with Doctor Who. For those who may not be initiated with Big Finish, Robson has penned several highly regarded audio dramas, including Human Resources, Urgent Calls, and The Five Companions.

A few of the highlights from the interview:

On Doctor Who burnout:

“So there was a period where I was hardly watching any—I remember getting the [The Tomb of the Cybermen] DVD for Christmas and my attention sliding off the screen, I just felt I’d seen this stuff too many times.”

The Best Non-TV Who adventure:

Human Nature. I was reading the New Adventures… I devoted my teenage years to them. But Human Nature sticks in my mind as the peak of that range.”

On which incarnation is ‘his’ Doctor:

“I find it hard to separate Hartnell, Davison and Tennant. At first I thought Smith was even better than Tennant, but now I look back and it’s easy to take for granted how great Tennant was in the part”

Robson is currently working on Series 2 of his acclaimed BBC Radio sitcom,  Welcome to Our Village, Please Invade Carefully. Read the interview in its entirety over at the DoctorWhoThing blog. Sound off below and let us know what you think of the interview and Robson’s works!
