Capaldi on Rumours Jenna Is Leaving
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Peter Capaldi remained tactful when questioned over Jenna Coleman possibly leaving Doctor Who.
“I’m not looking for a new assistant,” he told Alex Jones and Matt Baker on The One Show when asked what characteristics his next companion should have. The Mirror reported earlier this week that Jenna is leaving the TARDIS at Christmas, but, as Capaldi went on, we don’t even know if she’ll survive the Series 8 finale, Dark Water/ Death in Heaven!
Well - spoilers! - we do: both she and Peter have been confirmed for this year’s festivities.
Nonetheless, his dismissal of the rumour is promising for those of us who love the Impossible Girl.
The One Show also exclusively revealed behind-the-scenes footage, taken from Doctor Who Extra, of the Twelfth Doctor’s first script read-through, during which he sat between Jenna and Dan Starkey, aka Strax. New companion, Samuel Anderson aka Danny Pink was also present…
“I’m influenced by the entire history of the show,” he continued, and then went on to praise his previous incarnations: “Both Matt [Smith] and David [Tennant] have been incredibly kind and helpful and supportive… Peter Davison has been absolutely lovely too.”
Furthermore, he was also presented with the Twelfth Doctor action figure, and pondered if he was fully articulated on the show!
He is, of course, promoting Deep Breath… which starts this Saturday!

Official Synopsis: Robot of Sherwood
Philip Bates is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Let’s put aside, for the moment, Deep Breath and Into the Dalek, and instead look at the third episode of Series 8, Robot of Sherwood.
Due to air on 6th September, here’s what to expect:
In a sun-dappled Sherwood forest, the Doctor discovers an evil plan from beyond the stars and strikes up an unlikely alliance with Robin Hood.
With all of Nottingham at stake, the Doctor must decide who is real and who is fake. Can impossible heroes really exist?
Written by Mark Gatiss (The Unquiet Dead; The Crimson Horror), and directed by newcomer, Paul Murphy (Wizards vs. Aliens; Casualty), Robot of Sherwood stars Tom Riley as Robin Hood and Ben Miller as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Murphy, meanwhile, will return to the series for episode 6, The Caretaker.
Broadcast times are yet to be announced, but we reckon Robot of Sherwood will be on at around 7pm. And if you want to know more about Peter Capaldi’s debut season, check out our largely spoiler-free preview!

Reviewed: The Sleeping City
Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The twist. The reversal. The revelation. The moment every great story has that takes everything you thought you knew about the plot and turns it on its head. It’s the Professor Yana moment (or the River Song is Amy and Rory’s daughter moment, if you prefer and didn’t know it was coming). The best stories use these sparingly and effectively. Otherwise, it becomes clichéd and runs the risk of becoming nonsensical. One of the latest installments in Big Finish’s The Companion Chronicles, The Sleeping City, takes its shot at the “I didn’t see that coming” moment and nails it.
The story finds Ian Chesterton, voiced by original actor William Russell, answering tough questions by an interrogator named Gerrard. Ian and Barbara are being detained for questions surrounding their 1963 disappearance with Susan and the Doctor. This Ian Chesterton is a confident and faithful companion, in contrast to the often brash and argumentative man who first barged his way into the TARDIS. In an effort to appease Gerrard, Ian tells him of his travels with the Doctor, Barbara, and Vicki to the city of Hisk.
One of the most rewarding parts of the audio story is the sound framing of the actual city. The effort put into creating the sonic atmosphere succeeds in transporting the listener to the city, almost as easily as walking out the front door into your world. Exciting as that may be, the city has its own dangers in the form of the dreaded Harbringers, reaper-esque creatures that promise death to those they encounter in Limbus. Limbus itself is an interesting concept, as all the citizens of Hisk share a collective dream state. While the other members of the TARDIS team brave the mysterious Limbus, the Doctor declines and in doing so discovers that perhaps the danger isn’t from within the dream itself, but in the real world while the people of the city slumber. As the story rushes towards its climax, the interrogation intensifies as well. The story rushes to an ending you will not expect; there’s no way we’re spoiling it here.
The voice work is primarily completed by William Russell and John Banks. Of particular note is Russell’s uncanny take on Hartnell’s First Doctor. In a lot of ways, it is preferable to David Bradley’s take in An Adventure in Time and Space. While I would have preferred female actors filling the roles of Barbara and Vicki, having Russell act as a narrator for the story works in its own way. Banks is formidable as the voice of Gerrard as well as other citizens of Hisk. His performance is seething with the possibility that there may be quite a bit more the Ian’s interrogation than he is letting on.
The story itself was penned by Ian Potter and very accurately feels like it could have existed on the program itself back in the early days of Doctor Who. Indeed, Potter’s Doctor Who is much more subdued in nature compared to modern day Who and finds the Doctor as much more of an organizer of the action than actually being in the thick of things. This is a trait I speculate that we may see return a bit with our new Doctor, Peter Capaldi. Only time will tell for sure.
Big Finish’s The Sleeping City is highly recommendable, especially to those who are fans of the First Doctor and Ian Chesterton. It’s available now from Big Finish in both digital and CD formats.

Peter Capaldi’s Past and Future TV Appearances
Alex Skerratt is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Things are certainly heating up in the build up to this Saturday’s Series 8 premiere – and crikey, it’s only Thursday! Goodness knows what state we’ll all be in by Saturday teatime. No doubt the tumultuous buffeting inside my head will trigger an early regeneration, and I’ll stumble into my local cinema with Urak in tow.
Anyway, the newly-regenerated Doctor has been touring the world on the BBC PR wagon, visiting such exotic places as Seoul, Sydney and New York. That didn’t prevent him from dropping into CBBC Newsround, though, to give a surprise to some rather startled young fans.
The young and future Whovians were enjoying a tour of the slightly revamped TARDIS set, when they were joined by none other than the Twelfth Doctor himself. Once the stunned and somewhat awkward silence had subsided, Peter Capaldi was kind enough to take some questions from the junior viewers, which he answered with his usual grace and good humour.
When asked why he wanted to become the Doctor, Capaldi admitted it was because it’s “the greatest role in television, and also it’s probably the closest you could get to actually travelling through space and time.”
And was he worried about taking over from his predecessor, the wonderful Matt Smith?
“Yes, because he’s fantastic,” Capaldi revealed. “I love Matt Smith; I think he’s the most amazing Doctor! He’s so funny, and so clever, so wise, he’s so young, he’s so old, he’s a brilliant actor, and he’s a lovely guy. He’s ticked all the boxes there, so it is quite a difficult job to take over when someone so wonderful has been doing it. But he, I think, is on my side, so I hope everyone else will be too.”
More excitingly for UK viewers, though, is the news that the Twelfth Doctor himself will be a guest on tonight’s The One Show at 7pm on BBC One (that’s Thursday 21st August if you’re reading this from a different time zone, or even a different universe). Apparently there’s a chance that some fans from around the world will be appearing in various video clips, presumably filmed during the recent World Tour, so that could be fun. I also like to think that Peter Capalid will exclusively reveal the return of the Rani and the Tetraps for the season finale, but I’m not holding my (deep) breath.
Anyway, that’s The One Show, Thursday 21st August, 7pm on BBC One, followed by the season premiere on Saturday 23rd August at 7.50pm. Then we’ve eleven more televisual gems, and the 2014 Christmas Special.
“Any moment now… He’s a-coming…”

Big FInish Releases New Dark Eyes 3 Trailer!
Nick Kitchen is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
We recently told you that the third installment of the award-winning Big Finish series, Doctor Who: Dark Eyes 3 is coming our way soon (which we’re pretty stoked about here at the K Towers).
In an effort to help bolster the excitement for the release, Big Finish has released an exclusive trailer to their SoundCloud page for the release and it’s pretty smart! Now, I know via the comments section in an article we ran not that long ago that not everyone has a smartphone or uses SoundCloud. Fair enough; to make sure everyone gets in on the McGann Doctor goodness, we’ve posted the trailer in this post so that you can get an idea of what to expect in this new release:
November can’t come soon enough! Lucky for us, there may be some other kind of Doctor Who thing happening on Saturday, but I may have to check my calendar on that one…
Dark Eyes 3, starring Paul McGann and a host of talented actors, is set for release in November. You can pre-order (digital or CD formats) now! Will you be partaking of Dark Eyes 3? Let us know down below!

Peter Capaldi Reunites with Thick Of It Co-star Chris Addison
James Lomond is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
In casting too coincidental to be fate alone, the Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor will be joined in the Series 8 finale by an on-screen pal from hit comedy The Thick of It. The Radio Times has announced that Chris Addison will appear in this year’s climactic two-parter intriguingly titled Dark Water/Death in Heaven…
Addison is a stand-up comic and may be familiar to you from appearances on topical comedy show, Mock the Week, and also starred in youthful drama Skins before The Thick of It. He played special adviser and bespectacled Cambridge graduate, Ollie Reeder in the political comedy, joining in the mockery, back-stabbing and desperate attempts to keep the party ship afloat. Here’s Addison and Capaldi sharing an appropriately sci-fi-themed moment from series four… There is, of course a BAD LANGUAGE WARNING accompanying the clip above.
More intriguingly, Addison is number two on the Ladbrokes bookies’ list of likely actors to take over from Jenna Coleman when Clara finally parts company – which *might * be this Christmas… (remember, gambling is addictive and bad for your wallet!)
This is almost certainly speculation and we’ll have to wait until the finale (or until he gets spied in front of a camera near a big blue box). He does appear to be a fan though – he told the Radio Times that appearing in the show has significantly shortened his bucket-list and imdb.com has the following quote on Addison’s page…
“Everybody mocks Daleks but they’re somehow astonishingly scary. I put this down to the way they have no faces – you just don’t know their thoughts. Also, they seem to have phlegm in their throats, which is no doubt because they’ve no faces to spit it out with. I like the flashing lights on top of their heads, they look like menacing versions of those vans laying out cones on motorways at night.”
Clearly a comedian of taste if Who-monsters form part of his material! EVEN more intriguingly, first on the bookies’ list of next companion to the Twelfth Doctor is Game of Thrones star Rose Leslie. Also known for her role as Gwen Dawson in period drama Downton Abbey (alongside Series 6 pirate captain, Hugh Bonneville) here she is doing arguing-and-kissing as Ygritte, gutsy woman of the Wild Folk in Game of Thrones…
In interviews she speaks with cut-glass English RP – but her Game of Thrones character has set me thinking. Could it be time for a historical companion, Kasterborites? We almost had one with the Victorian version of Clara in the Snowmen which would have been an interesting dynamic for the show. What do you think about a firey red-haired female version of Jamie, or Medieval serving-girl with her eyes on the stars? Time for a non-modern companion? What do you think and who would you cast?..

Doctor Who World Tour News Blast: NYC, Mexico & Rio
Rebecca Crockett is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
What a trip!
In advance of the new season of Doctor Who, stars Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman, along with executive producer Steven Moffat, have been traipsing across the globe to interact with fans of the show, hitting seven cities on five continents. With their last stop in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, they have traveled more than 27,ooo miles in support of the show!
We here at Kasterborous know there are just so many pictures and videos coming from each tour stop, so we thought you, dear readers, would like a lovely little round up of some of the goings on from the last three tour stops – NYC, Mexico City, and Rio – that you might have missed. Read on!
Six Year Old Fan Hits Doctor Who World Tour
If you’ve never heard of her, there is an absolutely adorable little girl named Lindalee Rose, a huge Doctor Who fan who does interviews and reviews for Behind The Marquee. Lindalee and her team were lucky enough to attend the Doctor Who World Tour stop event in New York City. and were privileged to meet the cast and see the first episode of the series.
Check out her first report from the event as well as the video below and make sure to check back once the first episode airs to see her review and more of her interviews with the Capaldi, Coleman, and Moffat!
Highlights of NYC
The first video we have for you shows some of the best questions from the Q&A at the New York City event! Looks like they had some really great questions including ones that I don’t remember ever having been asked of Jenna and Peter.
The second video here is a great little recap of the NYC stop with reactions from Capaldi and Coleman, as well as their reactions to what fans said about how the show makes them feel.
Thoughts on the Paternoster Gang, Moffat and Capaldi’s Talks about the “Flirting” Issue
The folks over at Bleeding Cool have posted their own report about the NYC event, and have included some non-spoliery details about the first episode. One specific point is about the Paternoster Gang and what role they play in the episode, which, according to the writer, will possibly answer some of the questions that have surrounded Capaldi’s casting.
Another point from the Q&A was that Moffat says there were NOT talks between he and Capaldi about the “flirting” between the Doctor and Clara, and that had there been such discussions, they would’ve also involved Jenna Coleman. The review states though that while watching the episode, Coleman and Capaldi work so well together that any supposed issues there might have been are all but forgotten
There are some other details revealed, though personally I don’t think they’d take away from that first viewing, but if you are spoiler-phobic, beware, dear reader. Feel free to read the rest of it for yourself, though – it has me so very excited for Saturday!
Mexico City!
The tour’s penultimate stop in Mexico City was greeted with great swarms of enthusiastic fans (3000 in the theater alone!) and huge applause for the cast.

BBC Worldwide have produced this superb video at Christ the Redeemer using a GoPro Drone cam.
Photos and videos are just now coming in to the rest of the world, but we do have a few for you here including Moffat, Coleman, and Capaldi at the press conference and some great fan interactions. Make sure you keep your Whovian dials turned to Kasterborous for more info as it becomes available!

Reviewed: The Classic Doctor Who DVD Compendium
Andrew Reynolds is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
Online compendia may only be a touch screen away but there should always be a shelf space reserved for its yellowing counterpart.
The humble dog-eared compendium still plays a large part in enriching the viewing experience and even the most tech savvy of Doctor Who fans will find something of interesting in the construction of The Classic Doctor Who DVD Compendium by Paul Smith; if not perhaps for a few design quirks, the odd choice to alphabetise releases and a crippling sense of what might have been.
Designed as a printed Amazon wish list for new fans or a refresher for older viewers still hunting down that last Easter egg in the Pyramids of Mars release (without actually loading the disc itself, of course) the book alphabetises each DVD release, listing amongst other things: there features, a few basic facts surrounding the episodes and the production of the disc, the restoration techniques involved in bringing each release to home audiences and a few tantalising story details which reveal no more than the blurb on the back of the DVD box.
There’s a niggling sense that there are hundreds of stories and minor triumphs that would have made for a far more exciting, essential book.
The layout is clean and the writing is engaging enough; if a little literal and lacking in insight or personality. However, there are a few design quirk that make finding sort after information more arduous than it necessarily should be.
Firstly there is the baffling decision to list each serial in alphabetical order rather than broadcast order, divided by each Doctor – much like the book does itself in two-page overview of every episode not a page before the actual guide itself begins; what’s stranger still, there are no page numbers attached to this quick two page guide either: how handy would that have been right at the start of the book?
What’s more, there are no page breaks between each alphabetised section; meaning entries run clumsily into one another with little or no fanfare. The problem is exacerbated by a vague contents page which rather than listing where each individual letter starts, simply reads: ‘DVD Releases A-Z…Page 29.’
A minor quirk of this system is that each alphabetised letter appears alternatively on the right or left hand corner of the page; meaning, if you are flicking through, you occasionally miss the start of a section, such as when the book switches from ‘B’ to ‘C’ midway down the page.
All of these design issues increase in annoyance with the digital edition which, thanks to the lack of a clearly defined contents page, results in a lot of random finger scrolling to find exactly what you are looking for.
Which brings us to the information itself.
The book is crying out for some authoritative colour; someone who can add a little colour to the technological landmarks (someone like Clayton Hickman or Mark Ayres) and give some genuine insight into what it was like to be fans producing the kind of features that get other like-minded fans excited: What was it like to be handed the keys to such a beloved franchise? What difficulties or problems arose? What were the biggest triumphs or regrets? What is the actual story of bringing the range to DVD?
Although the first thirty or so pages cover the birth of Doctor Who in the home market and the advent of DVD and the Doctor Who range effectively enough, there’s a niggling sense that there are hundreds of little stories and minor triumphs contained within that narrative that would have made for a far more exciting, essential book. There is no attempt anywhere to contextualise any of the features or offer an opinion.
There is still a lot of romanticism attached to books like these and rightly so; there is still a reader out there for an insightful compendium – thinking about the compendium’s place within the Doctor Who universe evoked a lot of memories of watching TV shows and films, racing to the shelves of my local library and grabbing something like the Programme Guide or the Time Out film guide to broaden my understanding and challenge what I thought I had seen. The Classic Doctor Who DVD Compendium: Every Disc, Every Episode, Every Extra couldn’t inspire me or challenge me now in quite the same way.
That’s not to say that there really is no reader for it; everybody has to start somewhere. However, it’s difficult to shake off the feeling that this compendium is something of a missed opportunity.
The Classic Doctor Who DVD Compendium: Every Disc, Every Episode, Every Extra by Paul Smith is available in paperback edition for £16.99 and Kindle edition for £9.26 via Amazon.

Doctor Who Extra Launches On BBC iPlayer!
Christian Cawley is a writer at Kasterborous Doctor Who News and Reviews - All the latest Doctor Who news and reviews with our weekly podKast, features and interviews, and a long-running forum.
The BBC has today announced Doctor Who Extra – a brand-new series, exclusively on BBC iPlayer. Doctor Who Extra is much more than a ‘making of’ show, as we follow Peter Capaldi every step of the way throughout the creation of his first season as the Doctor.
This should be a fascinating collection of weekly shows, available via the Red Button and online. Not quite a replacement for Doctor Who Confidential, though, as its remit seems a little different.
Over the course of 12 programmes we trace the highs and lows of Doctor Who’s most ambitious run of episodes yet, getting the inside take on series 8 from the people who made it.
The Doctor Who Extra team had unparalleled access to stars including Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson (series regular Danny Pink) plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and many more. Writers, such as Lead Writer/Executive Producer Steven Moffat, and directors also contribute, as they spill the beans on the on and off-screen drama.
Casual viewers will enjoy the fun, fast pace and lighter side of Doctor Who Extra but there’s plenty for fans, too, as we take a quick dip into the archive for every edition, reflecting on how Doctor Who’s history is echoed in this current series.
Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens.
Doctor Who Extra is produced by BBC Cymru Wales and executive produced by Steven Moffat, Brian Minchin and Jo Pearce. Each 10-minute Doctor Who Extra episode will be available after that week’s Doctor Who episode on BBC One.
